Ive worked Exploration Rigs 500 miles North of inuvik slept in a tent for 70 days straight.. thrown out of a helicopter for 12 hour shifts on the Tundra.
I quit that to work in mines 1100 meters under ground. I don’t see women signing up for this.

Men working in more physically demanding or dangerous jobs which have a higher base level of pay than a cushy office job
Men working on average more hours than women

I should probably make the following into a copypasta to save having to type it on a mobile.

Used to work as a QA on the night shift. We had three shifts, morning, day and night. Guess which shift paid £1 more per hour and also had less women?

If you averaged out total earnings per gender for us regular QA, it would make it out that women got paid slightly less than men, when they didn't.

I doubt statisticians take situations like this into account, and yet here we are.

Men and Women go into different job's. Men are more likely to work overtime, argue for better pay, go into STEM fields. Women make up less than 30% of STEM workforces. So when you look at pay gaps based on ANNUAL earnings of GENDERS then yes there's going to be a gap. These pay gap studies aren't based on the comparison of men and women in the same position doing the same job.

Depends on the country you are in.

For the US, the wage gap no longer exists. The reason why women claim it exists is because they conduct a univariable analysis (uncontrolled) of the median income for people that work 35+ hours per week. What they fail to leave out is the % of women in the workforce, the number of hours worked by each sex, qualifications, time at the job, job satisfaction preferences, number of time you change jobs, marital status, etc. are the controlled analysis. The difference?

Uncontrolled gender pay gap is $0.83/$1

Controlled gender pay gap is $0.99/$1.

For instance, 10.9% of women work between 35-39 hours per week compared to 4.3% of mean and actually receive 7% more median pay.

25.1% of men work 41+ hours per week compared to 14.3% of women.

5.8% of men work 60+ hours per week compared to 2.5% of women.

Men work riskier jobs and are more than 10X more likely to die due to occupational injury deaths.

Men switch jobs more often which are typically leads to a 3% increase in pay on average.

There are also psychological differences between men an women. Men are less agreeable than women as a whole. Men place more importance on career progression, pay and benefits, and the reputation of the organization. Women assign greater importance to skills match, gaining experience, job security, proximity to home, being interested in the work, and work-life balance.

Both the controlled and uncontrolled gender pay gap ignores location which employment genders seek depending on where they live and what the cost of living is. For instance, you can look at a teacher's pay in a rural area vs a suburban one, the increased cost of living accounts for increased pay in the suburban area. Mixed that with the how their is an increase in female to male teachers in a rural area and you start to see that the rural areas are dragging down the average annual compensation for female teachers, which creates the false equivalent of the median female annual income being less than men.

Education also plays a role. If you look at the top paying 10 college degrees, men choose these at a rate 3-5X that more of women. When you look at the bottom paying college degrees, women choose these at a rate 3-10X that of men.

So the gender pay gap is a total fucking myth in todays economy (in the USA), and if someone is claiming that that women get paid less, just tell them whip out their time card and start comparing hours.

The gender pay gap calculation is a disingenuously crude calculation that fails to reveal any detail as to the actual experience of male and female earners. It's typically calculated as all female full-time earnings/divided by female workers expressed as a percentage of the same calculation for men. That tells us nothing of real use. All of the highest earners are typically male. What benefit do you receive from having your earnings calculated with those of Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk. You don't get any of the pay but your still calculated into that average. Then afterward your partner is going to turn to you and talk about your privilege. As others have already stated it fails to consider hours worked, experience, risk etc. Most women out earn men in today's society as an average up until child birth. And while your partner is going to talk about unpaid childcare and work around the house all it really says is that women in today's society still have the liberty to choose to work while men are expected to provide. Your partner is going to hate all these arguments because it will force her to confront that she as a woman also has privileges. She just doesn't want to accept it though.

Your example in brackets is what I've heard referred to as an earnings gap. As far as I know, that is real (although not on the exact percentage) and is due to mainly job and hours worked.

If we're talking wages (work done for a set amount of time, basically hourly/daily rate or yearly salary) for the same position, then it's a different conversation. I believe that number is under 10 percent and varies from sector to sector. There are also laws in most countries that cover this scenario and it would be considered discrimination.

I don't know enough about the topic to really say who is right in your situation, but I think you should clarify what you're specifically talking about with your gf.

All your gf needs to do is go to the governments Bureau of Labor Statistics and she will get a breakdown by gender of occupations.

One of the reasons that by statistics has men earning more money than women is because men will go into high paying occupations that women won't go near. And these are occupations that don't encourage the use of nail polish.

In the construction and engineering industries women make up an aggregate percentage of 3.9%. Nothing is preventing them from entering these fields. Here are jobs that pay over $100,000 a year that women avoid like the plague

Petroleum Engineers, Women Employed 0% Construction Engineers, Women Employed 0% Nuclear Engineers, Women Employed 0% Electrical Engineers Mechanical Engineers

Women prefer the fields of medicine and healthcare, banking, finance, investments, real estate, and legal professions

Women do not want to go into fields where men have traditionally dominated, even though these fields are available to them. The bottom line is that the jobs I have listed are tough jobs requiring hard labor. And, many of them are dirty and dangerous. And just because of the nature of the jobs they also happen to be high paying.
