there's so much wrong with this ....it's hard to begin with any one fucked up point made.

here's one: gendered quotas and gendered affirmative action:

"By committing to repeat this exercise next year, we have a serious incentive as a business to fix the problem. This could be as simple as hiring more women into leadership positions or promoting more women."

here's another: Newspeak:

"we have tried to define what is and isn’t acceptable when it comes to language in the company. This is not to say that swearing is banned; it’s more that we do not see this office as a place for comments such as “stop being a girl”.

another one: can't compete? no prob...we'll just eliminate that whole pesky "competetive" thingy:

"My experiences in the workplace have taught me that you can’t fix structural inequality by telling women to “assert themselves more” or to “lean in”. You’ve got to change the unfair system that has failed women in the past and continues to fail women today."

which is in conjunction to more of the same:

"Overly prescriptive job descriptions have been shown to deter women from applying, so we have simplified those. We have removed some of the grey areas around pay and promotion by more clearly defining what we look for in reviews, and by not using stereotypically male characteristics to appraise leadership skills.'

bottom line...don't apply for a job at brainlab....well, not if you have a penis between your legs. if not, you're just the right candidate for them.

[–]mikesteane 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

if not, you're just the right candidate for them.

No, this kind of thinking always results in a disaster. It's a bit like saying "Don't go and live in a communist country unless you are a labourer, then it will be just the thing for you." It won't.

[–]RedBigMan 8 points9 points10 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Well I know which company I'm NOT hiring for math, tech or analytics. Clearly to them feels are more than reals.

[–]Aapje58 7 points8 points9 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

If they really believe that normalization is a con, then do they also pay the same salary to the CEO as to the cleaning person? Do they pay the same salary to a worker who works 20 hours as to one that works 40?

Or are those perfectly valid reasons for pay differences unless men and women make different choices on average?

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points8 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

So, we should conclude by the fact you're going to be doing this annually that you've been grossly underpaying your female staff and are now compensating?

In a couple of years, the only men left at that company will be white knights and manginas galore. Run, men, run. No company willing to use a stunt like this that comes at your expense gives a shit about you on any level.

[–]Deansdale 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Seeing how they practically admit to discriminating against women up until this point they should be sued. If they didn't, then they are discriminating against men now. It's a lose-lose situation.

[–]Rockbottom503 5 points6 points7 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Ooh - if I were an employee at brainlabs who had not received the rise based solely on my gender, I'd certainly be considering a discrimation case right about now

Id love to see how free market globalized economy deals with inequality.... (doesn't matter against which sex)

Companies with will hire the sex that gets paid less for same quality of work - theyll make fatter profits and out compete the sexist businesses who overpay for same work.

I guess they'd know how the math works.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (30 children) | Copy Link

They clearly don't. As evident by the fact they attempt to declare evidence and the very statistics they're coming up with the pay gap myth refuting them to be "normalization" and a "con".

[–]obstinatebeagle 7 points8 points9 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I think they know how the math works. They know that running the math clearly disproves their emotional position, so they completely disregard the math and go with their feelings instead.

[–]ThirdTurnip -1 points0 points1 point 10 years ago (27 children) | Copy Link

No they didn't. They said normalization is a con.

But normalisation is a con – you can justify anything once it’s already in place.

That's true.

[–]aesopstortoise 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (13 children) | Copy Link

It's true? Normalisation is only a con if you're being devious, otherwise it's simply common sense if you want to understand the information you're dealing with. They have taken an ideological stance, so u/obstinatebeagle is exactly right.

[–]ThirdTurnip -3 points-2 points-1 points 10 years ago (12 children) | Copy Link

I know statistics. I know what normalization is. And I know that what the author of the article said is correct.

Normalization of data isn't something you'd normally do. Most of the time its use would be inherently devious.

[–]skepticalbipartisan 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (11 children) | Copy Link

Let me get this straight...

There's a ~27% difference between the amount of money the average man earns over a woman.

Saying it's about choices = normalization = bad?

Saying it's about sexism = only true answer = good?

Logic seems sound.

[–]ThirdTurnip -2 points-1 points0 points 10 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link

Let me get this straight...

You failed to get it straight.

[–]skepticalbipartisan 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link

Enlighten me then oh lord of the gaps.

[–]ThirdTurnip -1 points0 points1 point 10 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

Normalisation = changing the raw data.

You'd almost never do that.

What the author is saying is that a statistician could fiddle the numbers (i.e. normalise) to make a real gap disappear. Lies, damn lies and statistics.

Pay gap is defined as the relative difference in gross hourly earnings of women and men. By definition if you normalise then you're lieing.

With extreme cases like a professional, single gender sports team who also employ associated trainers, medical and admin staff, a single raw pay gap figure would always show a massive pay gap in favour of players' gender. That would be a meaningless figure. You could but wouldn't normalise this data (eg. by artificially deflating player salaries down into the same range as associated staff). You'd just exclude the players' salaries.

[–]skepticalbipartisan 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

Pay gap is defined as the relative difference in gross hourly earnings of women and men. By definition if you normalise then you're lieing.

Except it doesn't take into account the hours worked. It's the average annual earnings. They don't account for things such as overtime, danger pay, location premiums, or extra time off.

If it were a WAGE gap it would be represented as an actual wage (dollars per hour). The reason you don't see this calculation being done is because men work more hours on average. In fact, the hours worked gap is pretty close to the "wage" gap.

[–]obstinatebeagle -1 points0 points1 point 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Normalisation = changing the raw data.

You'd almost never do that.

False. That is like saying that 2 lbs is twice as heavy as 1kg because it has a "2" in it.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (12 children) | Copy Link

That's true.

Math and statistics refuting their preconceived false notion of a pay gap isn't magically invalidated because they scream "it's a con!".

The pay gap is still refuted. The only con here is that they met basic facts and then denied them by people could twist statistics to refute them while they themselves are actually twisting statistics to back their original claim.

[–]ThirdTurnip -2 points-1 points0 points 10 years ago (11 children) | Copy Link

None of those words you just spat at the page actually make any sense.

But this, what they said. That makes perfect sense.

You might also think that as a mathematician I’d explain the gender pay gap with complex statistical models, normalising for differences in men’s and women’s backgrounds, career paths and time at work. But normalisation is a con – you can justify anything once it’s already in place.

Normalisation is a statistical procedure which he is just pointing out shouldn't be applied in this instance.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Normalization_(statistics)

[–]aesopstortoise 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

I think that anyone reading the article would agree that the paragraph you quote is central to her argument. When you say, "Normalisation is a statistical procedure which [s]he is just pointing out shouldn't be applied in this instance.", however, I think you are mistaken. She is not simply dismissing a procedure that is part of her speciality, she is using that dismissal to refuse to address any issue related to differential pay, that might explain it in any way other than as the result of unfairness to women. There is nothing to be discussed so far as she is concerned, there is no process of reasoning to justify the claim that the gender pay gap is a problem that must solved rather than a natural result of peoples' different choices, or even some combination of the two.

Perhaps they should change their name to 'heartlabs' as it's clearly all about the feels.

[–]ThirdTurnip -2 points-1 points0 points 10 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

Not even close.

Normalisation is almost never used in statistics. Because - let's be clear - normalisation = changing the raw data. Statistical blasphemy.

It is done sometimes though. Rarely. When it makes sense to. Here it definitely doesn't.

Collectively in any business men earn a certain amount of money. So do women. There either is or isn't a pay gap. Any fiddling with the numbers only hides the truth of that.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

There either is or isn't a pay gap.

No, it's both. Because that depends on what gap you're calculating. When it comes to this issue, using imprecise language is being dishonest either way.

[–]ThirdTurnip -1 points0 points1 point 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Incorrect.

The meaning of pay gap is pretty clear in the blog post. Google it if you're uncertain.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

There was absolutely nothing incorrect in what I said. The use of precise language in science and statistics is of utmost importance.

The meaning in the blog is clear, but I was referring to the common use of imprecise language by people such as the MRAs in here, as well as Feminists and the US president. The public has been fooled and I am decrying this.

I will also decry the lying with statistics and omission. The blog's premise that women are inherently disadvantaged or discriminated against, which results in a pay gap, is a lie. The presence of an overall pay-gap is not seriously disputed by anyone.

Your statement that normalization should not be used is a funny one. So by that logic, if normalization DID reveal actual discrimination against women, I'm assuming your position would remain the same. So essentially, you would prefer that discrimination against women should not be revealed, even if they earned the same while working more. Because normalization is bad. Gotcha.

[–]aesopstortoise 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

To be clear, I deliberately went beyond the writer's mention of normalisation. That is not what I was talking about. The writer introduced the issue, which she then proceeded to dismiss. This is a dodge, a sleight of hand used to avoid discussing the actual issue, which is the company's choice to pay women more than men, so far as we can tell for the same work, not based on merit or performance. No one forced her to talk about normalisation, she chose to, and in so doing is misdirecting her readers into a dead end discussion about the relevance of statistical techniques.

"You might also think that as a mathematician I’d explain the gender pay gap with complex statistical models, normalising for differences in men’s and women’s backgrounds, career paths and time at work."

Actually, no, I definitely wouldn't expect that because the gender pay gap is an easily grasped concept and equally easy to debunk. If she, as a mathematician decided to do that, then fine, let her knock herself out so to speak, and I would then expect her to provide a reference to the raw data she was manipulating so those that cared to could she what she had done.

So to recap - *She introduced the mention of normalisation *She dismissed the use of normalisation *She did not address the central issue of whether or not the gender pay gap exists because of unfairness towards women, or as a result of their own freely made choices.

[–]obstinatebeagle -1 points0 points1 point 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Normalisation is almost never used in statistics. Because - let's be clear - normalisation = changing the raw data. Statistical blasphemy.

I call bullshit. Normalization and scaling are used all the time to make things comparable to each other. Economic data is normalized to take account of the burst of sales that happen around Christmas, and school leaving exams are normalized to take account of exam questions being harder one year and easier the next year (among other things).

Normalization (statistics)

In statistics and applications of statistics, normalization can have a range of meanings. In the simplest cases, normalization of ratings means adjusting values measured on different scales to a notionally common scale, often prior to averaging. In more complicated cases, normalization may refer to more sophisticated adjustments where the intention is to bring the entire probability distributions of adjusted values into alignment. In the case of normalization of scores in educational assessment, there may be an intention to align distributions to a normal distribution. A different approach to normalization of probability distributions is quantile normalization, where the quantiles of the different measures are brought into alignment.

In another usage in statistics, normalization refers to the creation of shifted and scaled versions of statistics, where the intention is that these normalized values allow the comparison of corresponding normalized values for different datasets in a way that eliminates the effects of certain gross influences, as in an anomaly time series. Some types of normalization involve only a rescaling, to arrive at values relative to some size variable. In terms of levels of measurement, such ratios only make sense for ratio measurements (where ratios of measurements are meaningful), not interval measurements (where only distances are meaningful, but not ratios).

how long til they go under?

either they were unlawfully paying their female workers less than their male workers for the same work, or now they're massively overpaying females for menial shit. do they really think they've figured out something google hasn't? STEM roles are largely, or even exclusively male, and tend to have significantly higher wages than non-STEM roles at tech companies. this is not out of some patriarchy trying to keep the wimunz down... it's because receptionists are low skill, low responsibility positions that are easily replaced, are almost exclusively female positions, and will tank the female average. operations positions (accounting, marketing, customer service) are only slightly higher skill, and still not even close to STEM, and to bring up their gender quota, will constitute most of the female workers, bringing down the female wage average. look at google, facebook, or literally any other tech company... STEM is almost exclusively male, and they make up as much of the gender gap as possible in operations/bizdev, and these companies are still 60-70% male.

the only way to get around this is to hire more females in higher comp roles (actual STEM roles). this is such a monumental task, that google turned around and donated $50m to non-profits that engage in teaching women how to code because the gender applicant gap in STEM applicants is utterly gigantic. males in high-comp roles are massively skewing the gender average. the only way they can solve this long term is to either: (1) unlawfully pay women more than men for the exact same work in non-STEM roles, or (2) hire every idiotically unqualified female who applies to STEM roles, and effectively overpay them, or (3) pay significantly below market wages for STEM roles. in 1, paying a woman 8.6% more than a man for the exact same work is by definition, illegal gender discrimination. in 2, any STEM person will be annoyed as fuck to work with these idiots, meaning the company will not only be watering down their STEM quality, they'll actively scare away the good candidates. long term, the average female STEM employee will be, by definition, less qualified, only making people hate working with STEM females more (perpetuating this cycle of stupid). and in 3, they won't be able to compete in the marketplace for STEM candidates.

this just reeks of full stupid. economics always wins.

The sexist says that promoting more women is the easiest solution and that giving away free money is the viable alternative. What would also work is employing a bunch of extra men at the lower end of the salary spectrum. They could get a few personal trainers or similar, which would boost the health of the organisation as well as bring down the abitrary figure they seem concerned about.

How quickly they forget that the average is where it is because of the LOW earners. But they are a marketing company, so are just generating publicity. I've boycotted the companies they do work for anyway, I've already saved a couple of hundred £££s since the story broke so I thank them for that.
