It's possible that you're seeing the up/downvote fuzzing mechanic at work. Reddit doesn't show the exact numbers.

I've seen a lot of good material getting downvoted almost as soon as it comes out. I've also seen some, though not necessarily terrible, very lightweight posts with hundreds of net upvotes. I figure that I don't really understand how things work on Reddit but feel the same sense of "something doesn't seem right" that you do.

Because a lot of the submissions here are awful.

The percentage of worthwhile submissions is much higher than, say, the default subs, but it's still pretty low.

Edit: I'm strictly egalitarian; I don't associate myself with a specific group like MRM, SRS, etc.
