This may be a little off topic, but I got into a discussion with my friends "recently- graduated- from- college- so- she's- all- woke" daughter. She was trying to insist that gender is nothing more than a social construct, and traditional gender identity is an anachronism, etc.

I asked her, "If that's the case, why do people transitioning require hormone therapy? That's a biological process that is immune to the concept of social construction. To take it further, why transition at all? If gender is nothing more than a social construct, simply announce your new gender and move on. If it's nothing more than a choice, then self identify and that should cover it, right?"

Little progress in the discussion was made from that point on.

Hmm interesting. Most of his mental changes are the opposite of what I have experienced (MtF here) with these exceptions:

Depression - This has dramatically reduced to the point where my day to day is either neutral or exciting. Essentially every day before my hormonal transition was marked by general ennui.

Leadership - Depends. I’ve always been a leader and in some regards I’ve gotten better at leading due to my increase in empathy. That being said, at the moment my confidence, which is necessary for a good leader, is a bit lower as the social transition to female includes the mastery of things like makeup, female fashion, female deference, etc. which have been difficult to master and as such sometimes I feel uncomfortable about my presentation. As I’ve improved with these skills, my confidence and hence my leadership skills have returned and for the most part improved.

Stoicism - I have always been stoic and don’t plan on changing that. After living in Sweden for a bit, I realized stoicism is not a gender specific characteristic.

There is no such thing as "female to male", or "male to female". A male can live as a woman, and a female can live as a man. But male and female are actual biological identifiers. If this person wants to live their life as a man, go for it. I fully support his right to live free and be happy. But a female can no more become a male than I can transform into a goldfish.
