Here's a story from my life last week, posting from a throwaway because the GF reads my main acct and i would rather not re-spark this fight.

please give me your honest oppinons- even if it is me needing to change how i think

Recently i had taken offense with something my girlfriend had done, and i explicitly asked her to not come over, and tried to explain that "i wasn't feeling well" admittedly i shouldn't have misled her, but i knew what the outcome of being forthright was going to be: us having a fight, while my emotions were still high.

she barraged me with texts and phone calls, until i finally responded and told her that i was beyond angry and needed my time to adjust myself and process my feelings. we then went into full blown argument mode, my stance being that she needs to stop treating me like im a villain, like i abuse, mistreat, or neglect her, and saying that i don't treat her as my equal, and i talk down to her, when i show her nothing but love and adoration and support, and try to help her acquire the things that she needs in her life to elevate herself both socially, mentally, and fiscally.

Essentially she has been treating me like a villain, or a bad guy, when i know that i am not.

I've essentially structured this as follows

  1. Her complaints/actions
    • my reasoning/reactions/actions

  1. i dont see her often enough
    • i work 40-50 hours a week, while she works as few as 8 a week which causes some disparity between our availability.
    • i live my life by these three questions:
      1. What have i done for my family/Dear ones?
        • I make sure to at least contact her each day to see how her day was
        • i make sure to at least call my family twice a month
      2. What have i done for my community?
        • I mentor at risk and minority children through local elementary and middle schools on finance, programming, and other life skills another 5-10 hours a week (usually on my lunch hour, and occasionally an hour after work)
      3. What have i done to better myself ?
        • i use another 5-10 hours of my week contributing to group projects involving programming, translation, and random Web community things (like wiki pages) to help keep my skills in these things fresh
    • All in all i have about 5 hours a night to myself after taking care of those three questions , and most of the weekends to myself
    • She has a key to my home, and full tilt to come over whenever she likes so long as she calls to let me know shes coming, so i'm at least semi decent- but usually only comes once a week
    • We literally play games and talk to each other 3-5 hours a night every single night even when she cant come over.
  2. i make her drive to come and see me
    • i live alone, while she lives with her parents. i don't feel comfortable around peoples parents from the start.
    • she is always off of work when i am working- as a result she can leave her home before i can leave work, and get to my house by the time that i do- vs Me going home, changing, then driving out an hour later to see her, and turning around to come home two hours later because i have to be up in the morning for my next day at work.
  3. i don't share my feelings
    • i feel like this is just a programmed female response - i regularly share my feelings with her. however when i share any frustrations i have with her, she
      1. sticks her head in the sand
      2. tells me to man up or get over it
      3. cries
    • so as a result i don't want to even bring up my feelings on things anymore.
  4. I talk down to her
    • she does not have any higher education or self imparted skills that she nourishes. i have done the following to try and motivate her into pursuing some form of self-betterment
      1. go to school (i even offered to help pay a bit for her classes, and to let her stay at my home so she would be closer to campus)
      2. Go to trade school ( same deal as the first offer )
      3. work on honing a skill (she is talented in drawing and such), or get into an apprenticeship (shes interested in being a mechanic)
    • i suggested that she start hanging out with her friends more, as i cannot be her only friend. it would give her more to fill her days with.
  5. Dont treat her as an equal
    • (what i feel is another female conditioned response)She couldn't give me any examples of how i do this- but i was able to give several as to how i treat her as my complete equal
      1. i regularly leave decisions to her- or ask her to help me make them- this ranges from food, to dating arrangements, to vacations, to anything. she generally withdraws and asks that i make the decision.
      2. i've given her a key to my home- and have expressed complete trust in her in all things
      3. do my best to elevate her to my fincancial level (as we are unequal in that respect). i offer to help her get a better job, or to look for one with her etc.
  6. am a pervert
    • berates me for still wanting to watch adult material
    • asks why i wont let her see my "collection"- and assumes its because its CP or other deviant materials
  7. talk badly about her to others
    • her first question to a complete stranger to her that i work with was "does he talk badly about me", and then tried to play it off like it was a joke when they responded that "no, he normally talks well about you, so much that i thought you weren't real" (this was what sparked my anger, and bought all of my feelings to the surface on this).
  8. Am mean to her
    • Casually told my grandmother that i am "kind of mean to her some times" when i was not around (i overheard it, and was told about it by my grandmother afterwards).
    • my grandmother afterwards confronted me about it and demanded to know if i was abusing her. and said that she couldn't even fathom me doing this and wanted to know why she would say such a thing.
  9. abuse her
    • she couldn't tell me how. i cant even fathom how this even escaped her mouth. i have never raised a hand to her, and have never ever ever ever ever mentally abused her. at worst i have critiqued her in an attempt to get her to improve her ways on some things.

having this mentality of me being this horrible person thrust on me repeatedly over time finally built up to me getting angry, because im not a bad person- and i work to be good every day of my life. i had huge anger issues when i was younger and fresh out of the military, as i had a very abusive upbringing stacked on the military mentality enforcing that. it took me a few years after leaving the military to work myself into the right state where i could finally keep good control on my anger and other emotions. when i get angry now- i have to walk away an not be pursued, because i will just turn my feelings off, and stop processing them. i need the time when i am upset or angry now to stop and process them.

hearing that im a bad person over and over and over and over is world-destroying and horrifying to me because I've always feared becoming as terrible as my father was. He was a horrible person, an addict, and an abuser on literally every single level of abuse (substance, mental physical and sexual) and did essentially all of the things shes accused me of, but with the added boon of stomping my mothers, and eventually my ass into the ground on a weekly/nightly basis.

So... what should i do? i've talked to her about it- and its tapered off for now, but i dont think it will stop for good.... is there any thing i need to correct on my end? i recognize that i am by no means perfect, and will accept any advice that pertains to me fixing myself that is sound.
