You will be competing for scholarships, internships etc. with those girls and you are already at a severe disadvantage by being a man. You need to match the extracurricular items on their resumes to have any chance at all. So you must join the club.

Likely you will know far more than everyone else, including any teacher involved in the club, so you can make yourself stand out by teaching lessons in more advanced topics and perhaps by tutoring other students.

As was said above it is going to get worse. The girls will be upmarked, you will be downgraded. They will be mentored by industry pros and instructors at local post-secondary schools. They will be whisked off on weekend retreats to meet with local industry, educators, and politicians. They will be helped and celebrated at every turn and you will be hated and derided. All based solely on sex, but it’s you who’s the sexist!

I hate to tell you this, but don't expect that sort of thing to get any better as you progress in your studies; in fact when you get on to college it'll probably get far worse and egregious.

Gross favoritism to females, regardless of whether it's desired or required, is becoming the law in education from college on down to grade school; you fight that law at your own peril. Despite the fact that only a minority of females show any interest in STEM fields and subjects, and only a minority of those show any competence comparable to their male colleagues, feminists (who've never really worked a day in their lives) will insist and implement things like this to try and artificially boost the number of females in STEM areas out of some foolish and counter-productive sense of 'equality'.

Women simply, and there's nothing sexist in pointing this out, make different choices than men. Given the choice, women will go into fields that are more people and nurturing-oriented, with part-time schedules, or are able to schedule around them getting married and having children. Frankly, these women are preventing men who'd actually make something of these programs and offers from living up to their potentials so that they can put women in slots they honestly don't deserve; and they do it because secretly they hate and envy men and their disproportionately productive contributions to society.

For them, it's easier to tear down men than build up women.

My advice? Learn to identify these people and their causes... then have as little to do with them as possible. Keep your head down in class and just swallow the nonsense you're going to hear about how 'The Patriarchy' is evil and the reason why people who now enjoy every privilege in the universe are so 'oppressed' for having to endure minor and unintentional inconveniences... then come on forums like this and vent to your heart's delight. You aren't going to change them because they're hopelessly indoctrinated, and if they pick up on you being an 'unbeliever', then can and will ruin your academic and professional life. Just apply yourself, graduate with a degree in a field you know will earn you top dollar, and work at a firm that hires top talent... you'll naturally end up in an environment where these sorts of people are almost non-existent, because those are fields based on merit that weed out the people that don't belong. You MIGHT have to deal with a sub-par diversity hire if the company's forced to buckle under, but usually either these people will be kept to the margins, or they'll either leave because they either can't handle the work (due to being boosted beyond their means) or they'll leave to start a family, having found someone within the firm to latch onto and secure an income from for life after getting knocked up. Don't end up becoming one of those doomed men who ends up having to support someone who robbed another man of his rightful place; honestly, have as little to do with women in general, they're far too problematic in this day and age.

I've been an engineer since graduating in 2005, and as un-pc as it is I'll say this and it's the truth: if you put the effort in, and you love programming, you'll be head and shoulders above any "girls club" coders. They'll get some funding, bursaries, subsidies, preferential treatment, but when it comes to it you'll be better at the actual job of you put the effort in to understand software.

Girls generally aren't better at coding, the system (education, employers) just wants numbers in order to look good and virtue signal. Actual projects, actual coworkers and peers and line management respect someone who can do the job and actually understands software

Want to have a programming superpower? Learn how to do this yourself. There are epic resources available online, and loads and loads of people you can ask questions--though really, just google it. StackExchange is your friend. This by itself will put you in the top 20% of programmers when you're an adult.

Yeah, the discrimination sucks. But in this case, you're actually better off.

You don’t need them. They will drag you back. Read books, SO, build shit.

You need to hang out around people like you not in clubs. I highly suggest learning IRC (and linux btw). All my pre-college tech buddies were there.

Hey buddy, I know that the favouritism aimed at women and girls in education can be disheartening, but as someone who is now a veteran in the IT field and generally considered by my peers to be an expert in my specialisation, I wanted to give you this encouragement:

The real world is not like this. If you listen overly much to the naysayers here and elsewhere, you will fall into the same trap that so many women do when feminists tell them that the whole profession/world is biased against them. In truth, there is some bullshit but there is also no substitute for real competency and work ethics. If IT or comp sci is your real passion then you will clear the minor obstacles, which mostly affect entry level positions and/or people of low capabilities.

Because of diversity hiring, you may find it a little harder initially to break into the type of role that you want. Fortunately in my experience that doesn't keep the truly talented young men from getting through, and once you're in you should find that the rule of acceptance into the club is to demonstrate competency - not to demand respect because of your genitals. Rather you should pity the people who don't get to learn this lesson early in life, and try to help them to understand if you can.

Do not underestimate the value of networking. Career women do tend to be at a disadvantage here if they are not adept at networking with men, because women's workforce participation rates are lower so they have smaller networks. This is also where they run into trouble when they try to crash their way into men's networks by demanding respect, instead of learning to pay their dues and earn their entry. At these times, remember how you felt as an outsider in the girls' coding group.

If the group that you are attending does not suit your needs, there are likely to be other coding groups out in your community that will serve you better, without the gender politics. One advantage of looking outside of your school is that you may find a group that has working professionals in it, which will expose you to more practical knowledge and also may help you to start building a professional network.

Good luck, man! You should stay in the club and get some friends (especially male) join. When applying for colleges and scholarships, definitely write down the group as the real name, “Girls Who Code” because that will help you so much. I the eyes of academia, you’re either a woman, trans, another identity, or so progressive that you joined a female group. I joined “Women in Law” in law school as well as “Women in Leadership” at work and these decisions have really paid off. It’s not weird if you’re there and say you support equality. I’ve done this and it has helped me meet and chat with great women about real equality for everyone.

Hi! I'm a junior and I lead my local GWC chapter. I thought I'd share my perspective here even though it's an old thread.

First of all, I totally understand how that can be frustrating. I go to an all-girls high school, so that was never really a problem, but (and I know you're not a 10th grader anymore since this was posted 7 years ago) everyone should be able to join the clubs they're interested in without feeling left out.

GWC is a bit different than clubs that are purely based on coding. We tend to focus a bit more on the effect of technological advancements on society as well as influential women in technology than traditional coding clubs. I'd argue it's just as much a discussion club as it is a coding club. If that's something you're not particularly interested in, GWC might not be a great fit for you. But if these are topics you're passionate about and you have things to add to the discussion, I'm sure that no one would be against you joining! Really, the name "Girls Who Code" is just that - a name.

I think the reason a lot of these organisations exist is because it's hard to keep girls interested in STEM. As kids of both genders grow up, they become pressured by societal expectations associated with their gender, so really, the goal is to show young women that there is a place for them in computer science and technology. We've come a long way, which I'm super grateful for and I know my friends at GWC would say the same.

But - and this is not directed at you, I'm just reading some of the comments here - I'd like to end by saying that women are not inherently less competent than men. I've met lots of brilliant men *and* women in STEM and learned a lot from them. Sadly, people have taken the idea of diversity and twisted it, but it's important to keep an eye out for unintentional bias.

I feel it's not to popular to say here but...

Girls are really represented in coding so if your feeling so eschewed by the fact that it's a "girls club" maybe use this as a teaching moment to find empathy for women who might want to could but feel they can't because it's a "boys club."

They'll let you join do it, show them your determination, you can write on you paper that you joined a Girls that Code Club because your a team player who doesn't let small adversities get in your way. Turn their advantage into your own, this could be your lucky break.

Ignore them and learn on your own, I can direct you towards some resources if you like. It depends on what language you want to learn though, I do C# and I'm doing games development for Unity.

Get the 5th edition in particular if you want to learn C it has a huge glossary in the back full of all the programming terms out there and an English explanation of them so not only will you be learning coding generally you'll be able to have conversations with other programmers and ask them for help on various topics.

I'm self-taught in programming, I did not go to a school and I've released my first game this year and I'm close to releasing a game for android. While that's not ideal for everyone I think you'll be far better off using this book and the internet than relying on some pseudo-intellectuals who hate men for learning code.

I'd stay away from that group myself, like you say, it's awfully sneaky they labelled themselves as 'Students who code' sounds like they don't want to get sued for discrimination and they're keeping it hidden. If you want to start a separate programmers club away from them that might be an idea then you guys can help each other learn and look up resources.

If you need anything let me know, never too early to start, I thought I was useless at code and maths but once I found the right resources everything just clicked together. Perhaps it's my background and how shit my education is but I personally don't trust schools with something like teaching code, it's too specialised for them and most teachers only know how to read from a textbook.

By the way, if you're looking for a compiler, I'd recommend codeblocks or something like that. Then if you want to get into games development pick a game engine of some sort and just play around with it. Most developers tend to use either Unity or the Unreal Engine.

Trust me, you follow this book you'll probably end up way ahead of that daft group just by learning it alone then after that as you learn all the programming vocabulary you can search up specific terms online and do research.
