I find it a little disturbing that she is referred to as an "engineer" despite having a BA in English (I suspect her "front end" job had little to do with coding and a lot to do with documentation -- a very important job, but hardly engineering).

For those who forget, this is the same company that removed a rug because it said "United Meritocracy of Github" and meritocracy is sexist. (source) edit: I forgot to mention that she (Julie Ann Horvath) was specifically one of the people pushing for the rug removal.

I'm glossing over some nuances in the title, but in a nutshell Julie Ann Horvath makes it clear that her employment troubles started when a wife of a co-founder started intimidating her. But yet every article about it makes it seem that the problem was that GitHub was a boy's club.

I have no doubt that some people will try to argue that GitHub was in fact a misogynist boy's club. However, I'm not disputing that (or agreeing with it).

My point is that harassment is not always black and white. Sometimes it's just about personality conflicts that have nothing to do with gender, race, religion, etc. And to use such personality conflicts as some sort of indictment against men is just wrong.

It's seems that she became unpopular among the staff of Github. This article is from one side so it's not clear why that was the case. My own experience of women in development studios is that they are treated the same as anyone else. People become unpopular by being difficult to work with, whatever gender they might be. I can only guess that her sense of victimisation might cause a problem.

The behavior of the directors wife is the worst part of this and it's obviously not sexism. The wife decided she was going to cause trouble and obviously wanted her out. But that behavior is inexcusable, companies should be run by adults who can communicate about problems, that certainly did not happen here. Github should never allow the founders wife on to the premises again, she appears to be drunk on his power.

Men with businesses should take note of this situation and understand that hiring women is a bigger risk to your business than any market force. Gents they are fucking liability of the first degree.

this situation was awfully managed at every end.

the strange part is that there was plenty of reasons to resign (like having her email spied, being harrassed by a cofounder's wife, etc), yet the situation that makes her quit is some guys gawking at some women playing hulla hopp.

See , this is exactly why I don't buy any of the "tech is a boy's club" crap.

Why is it that every time a woman gets fired or quits a job in the tech industry it's because of sexism ? How is it that tech is an industry that is made of misogyny while no other particular industry is full of it ?

Maybe because it's not a sexist , anti-female industry in the first place.

heres an alternative reading of the situation: It WAS a problem with the "boys club". not the MANS club, the BOYS club. the wife of the founder viewed everyone who worked for the company as her children, and tried to enforce the same control over them a mother does over her sons, and the men were ok with this. as soon as another women entered the arena, she felt she was being unfairly discriminated against (and she was, just not because she was a woman) and rather than trying to bond with the people who were in the same position she was, she alienated everyone by claiming they were oppressing her
