Has anyone actually gone through the democratic process of trying to get divorce laws changed by congress?

I’ve been quite effective in my state over the last 18 years. Both in improving existing law and even more: stopping them from getting worse.

50/50 custody happens a lot more often now due to legislation I passed. And when that doesn’t happen, 60/40 is the de facto standard these days and has been since pivotal legislation in 2015.

Alimony is improved. And I stopped terrible legislation on that front 6 years in a row, until the gold-digging woman who tried to pass her pet legislation got re-married and gave up.

These days, I’ve all but hung up my boots on this, though. I’m too tired, too old, and too traumatized to keep going. Someone else needs to take over. I’m tired of the man-hate, which has gotten worse over the years.

The old tender years doctrine has been done away with officially, though there’s still a bias in practice. MRAs have been slowly winning presumption of joint custody laws one state at a time. I know many men who are forced to pay more in child support than they did when married. Obviously, there is still a huge unaddressed bias there.

I think in terms of alimony and divorce settlement, we are mostly in a propaganda war. It’s hard to make political change, before changing inaccurate perceptions.

A friend of mine recently divorced and has to give half of his earning to his ex, only she isn’t working. He has to work full time to provide for her early retirement. Clearly, there’s nothing equal or fair in such decisions.

I would go further and say the laws need to change so you are not considered married by the government after your girl has moved in for x amount of time. There’s no way I’d move in with someone otherwise.

Some states have stopped lifetime alimony. Fun fact though, this didn't happen until WOMEN started to protest it. You know second wives were pissed their hubby had to send money to his ex.

Isn’t divorce a state government domain? That means you’ll need to change the laws in all 50 states on an individual basis.

no, not really. but in a more general sense there are a few things worth knowing and steps that can be taken:

1) divorce laws vary by state, so you're not looking at a national campaign, but rather a state and local one.

2) in some states you can get things on the ballot by initiatives, meaning in essence getting enough signatures to put it on the ballot. in states where this isn't the case, you can still go through a process of gathering signatures and present them to law makers as indicative of a strong will and raising of awareness.

3) since it is a state issue, volunteering at your local party of choice's offices can be very effective in steering local politics. just gotta stick to it and be focused, as in, don't get caught up in some other political bs, no matter how passionate you might feel about, just focus on pushing that particular issue within your party of choice on a local level.

This is also remarkably effective as much of a local and states platform arises from those people actively involved in volunteering on a local level.

i'd suggest default 50/50 custody laws, and basic communal property laws (meaning 50/50 split of property), no fault divorce, and folks can look around at various states' existing laws to get a sense of what's out there.

i'd suggest avoiding any temptations towards backtracking on how laws have shifted, as there is almost certainly too much resistance to it for it to succeed, and wouldn't accomplish what folks want anyway. just reactionary to the problems that are present.
