With default 50/50 equal shared parenting legislation being passed in State legislatures more and more, child support as alimony will come to a halt.

Many, if not most states have either eliminated alimony or reduced it dramatically.

They get around this by rolling alimony into child support and giving primary custody to mothers 90% of the time.

My boyfriend is a high earner. When he got divorced 4 years ago, his ex got the house and he got all the debts including thousands she had charged on credit cards. He also got stuck with all the lawyer fees. He pays her 45% of his gross income in alimony for 7 years. She was a SAHM even though their children were adults. Due to the length of the marriage and her not working, he was slammed. She still doesn’t work and I doubt she ever will. He recently lost his job and is having a hard time finding another one due to his age. He temporarily stopped paying her alimony but when it goes back to court I’m sure he will have to reimburse her from his savings. He isn’t “allowed” to retire. The situation is basically indentured servitude.

Any alimony is a problem, and no alimony ever should be given.

Coming into this thread very late after a google search on the topic. But 'yes' this is still a massive problem in the state of South Carolina, where courts still prefer permanent alimony. If anyone is still out there, please sign this petition (not looking for money) for public awareness and support, in order to persuade local legislators who have resisted reform to this point.
