I have a lot of time for John Waters. I'm happy to see that he is allowed a voice beyond his books, because he knows what the gig is.

To be honest, I didn't finish reading the linked article, because the first half or third or whatever was enough - loud bells rang, my eyes went a bit misty, all that.

I know, I know - her body, her choice. To force her (as if I could) to carry the pregnancies to termination would have been wrong, even if I could have (I didn't).

I know, I know - it's all in the past, and anyway it's All Too Late Now.

But still, I know I would have loved them, and I know they would have known I did. But there you go...

Women do as well. They cover all this stuff up with rhetoric to make people think the process is 'harmless'.

I've never understood this push to ignore/diminish that part of humanity; Pregnancies are celebrated, pregnant women are protected and lauded, miscarriages are mourned and commiserated, this is the same for all cultures and civilisations. And, somehow, we've this idea that men don't have any feelings towards their own children whatsoever

Apparently there's a law in Canada that states if a woman becomes pregnant by a casual encounter partner, she's under no obligation to even find the father and let them know.

It can be. The subject of abortion affects different people in different ways. I know for a fact that it didn't bother me or my partner in the slightest. On the contrary, having access to this service for free (universal healthcare) was a huge relief for both of us. I am honestly glad we had that abortion.

[–]Hadashi_blacksky 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Well alright then. I don't want to start a debate, but I honestly feel that the baby would be better off adopted.

She developed Hyperemesis Gravidarum, a complication where pregnancy causes extreme nausea, to the point where she was vomiting more than 10 times a day, every single day, no matter what she ate. She couldn't keep any food down, she was becoming dangerously dehydrated, so I can honestly tell you that I don't give a fuck about that baby. All I cared about was the health of my partner.

You see, the doctors said they couldn't perform the abortion so early, they had to let the baby grow a little, so that it was easier to abort. (The abortion pill is not approved in the EU.) So, she had to wait. And puke all day every day for 10 more days. She was miserable the whole time, crying all day. She couldn't work, she couldn't even move without her nausea causing her to vomit. Even watching TV or reading was too much movement. She had to lay still and look at the fucking wall for 10 days. Without food, hooked to an IV drip to fight dehydration.

And yes, there is medication for that sort of thing. Tried everything, didn't work. I even went out and found surgical-grade anti-nausea medication for her, like Zofran, which pharmacies don't even sell to the public, and that didn't work either. She kept puking like crazy.

So, with all that in mind, you telling me that she had to go through with this bullshit for NINE FUCKING MONTHS because it would have been better for the baby is downright infuriating to me.

I'm sorry. I understand that you may have different moral rules because of your religion or whatever, but I honestly didn't even think for one fucking moment about what would be better for the fucking baby. All I thought about was when the fuck we could get rid of the fucking parasite that was ruining my partner's life.

Okay, fair enough - you didn't tell me your circumstances, and your case seems like an extreme outlier. I was speaking in general, so please don't get angry at me. In a case like yours the baby is not viable as it would kill the mother anyway - so there is a strong case for abortion being moral. I realise this is a difficult situation for you, and I don't mean to sound insensitive about it.

[–]Hadashi_blacksky -1 points0 points1 point 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Have you thought of adoption instead?

[–]AloysiusC 2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

What is the meaning of maternity really? Is is it some beautiful, divine gift of life or is it just a biological function akin to excretion? If it's the former, then abortion is a terrible thing to do and we should be able to say so - irrespective of whether it should be allowed.

And if it's the latter, then mothers shouldn't have any special say in what happens to their offspring after birth that fathers don't have. They don't know better and shouldn't be treated as if they do.

Pick one.

One cannot force a woman to carry to term because that would be taking privacy away from an individual. If you don't that risk either a termination or child support then protect yourself. Don't leave it in anyone else's hands wear a condom.

[–]duhhhh 2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Put it in a urologists hands. Freeze some and get a vasectomy. Condoms break and women that forcibly envelope men to get knocked up get child support.

[–]thenarddog13 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Vasectomies are not a guarantee either. The best method of bc it's proper use of a condom combined with the use of a spermicide (not just a condom with spermicide, but a separate product).

[–]pasta4u 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

No best method would be getting a vasectomy and continuing use of a condom and spermicide condoms are not a 100% effective

[–]thenarddog13 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I meant to say that spermicide condoms are less affective than a spermicide + condoms.

[–]pasta4u 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I believe spermicide doesnt work at all tho

[–]omegaphallic 3 points4 points5 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

It's best not to get attached to a fetus, it's just a hypothetical until it's born, THEN you should get very attached to the actual baby.

[–]The_Best_01 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I mean, until their brain starts developing, I agree. But then they start feeling pain.

[–]boy_named_su 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

That's because they just murdered someone

[–]Undidiridium_ 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yep. But hey, her body, her choice right?

[–]The_Best_01 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

They should just man up! /s

But yeah, of course they do. It's stupid to think only women experience these things.
