Why do you think equal pay has not been implemented?

Because every case is different. There are probably some places out there where pay is, on average, equal. In other cases, not so. Large part because of how secretive we are about how much we get paid.

What is your opinion on the claim that women should not be paid equal amounts for unequal work? (Example: A construction job that often requires you to comfortably lift 75 pounds unassisted, Bob can do so and Sue cannot, Bob thinks that Sue should have a lower wage because she isn't performing the duty as well as Bob.)

Ideally, if someone isn't doing what they need to, they need to be disciplined up to and including termination (though ideally their manager should work with them before moving to more drastic action). If a woman is given lower requirements, it basically means she has gotten a different job that is easier for same pay which can only be given to women. This is obviously not right.

Not to mention the issue that this spreads sexism, as other people notice if someone is doing less work but getting paid the same.

How much would gender equality improve once equal pay is reached?

Not much, assuming no other areas improve. For example, if men are still expected to pay for dates, equal pay becomes unfair in a dating relationship. On the other hand, if all these areas were to move towards equality, then things would become far fairer.

Have you experienced workplace discrimination in regards to pay? How did you handle the situation? How has your quality of life changed after that?

Not based on sex, and largely I do not talk with coworkers about how much I am earning. About the only thing I know is that, counting in inflation, my current job, which basically requires a college degree, is effectively making less than my father started out making even though he had a lower level of education.

I'm trying to find the article, but it seems that many women going into starter positions (something I'm interested in, due to the fact that I am graduating undergrad in May and looking for my first full time job) start with less pay BECAUSE they don't ask for higher pay. Men, apparently, will ask for a higher starting salary.

I think there are a lot of reasons equal pay has not be fully implemented. The two best reasons that I can think of are:

1) Companies can get away with it, and some will take that opportunity. I think this is wrong and should be stopped.

2) Hiring an employee is an investment. It takes time a lot of time and money to go through the process of hiring and training an employee before they become fully productive and integrated into their job. That being said, statistically women do tend to not stay in the workforce as long as men. The companies would see a greater return on that investment when hiring a man, and therefore it makes sense to pay them more because they (statistically) will be with the company for longer. This saves them money because they don't have to train an employee as often.

Continuing with the logic from #2, it would be the same basic reason that men pay more for insurance. We statistically cause costing accidents than women, so it makes sense that they would charge us more as a whole, seeing as they can't judge us individually. Also with health and life insurance, men tend to have more health problems and live shorter lives than women. For the insurance company to see an optimal return on their investment they have to charge us more.

tl;dr - Hiring an employee is an investment in which they statistically see a greater return from when hiring a man. Just like men pay more for insurance because we die sooner and cause worse accidents.

This is really a gender role/cultural issue rather than a systematic discrimination one. I think the reasons often cited for unequal pays have in one way or another something to do with motherhood. I think the problem here is that mothers are expected to take time off when they have children while men are not. There are biological constraints here that make short maternity leaves (such as 3 months) female unique issue. But in my opinion solving the problem of equal pay can be addressed by increasing and encouraging the possibility of long term paternity leaves. It might make employers see men as an equally risky investments. Or increase female dedication to job because she doesn't need to take years off to stay with the kids. It is also a complete undermining of fatherhood to make the man take on the financial responsibility at the expense of spending time with their children. This trend in female maternity leave might also be because women marry 'up' and the male often has a higher income. This needs to change as well and with the spike in the "Where have all the manly men gone?" articles it seems that this ideal male archetype is still pined for.

If it is reached naturally then it's a sign of social change. Where women are not babied and men are not providers. As much as we like to think we've moved on from the times when women were treated like children we still really haven't. Women have too many options to avoid responsibility and so succeeding and earning the most at a job is not the collective female priority nor is it the definition of femininity. Meanwhile being a hard worker/earning status/power/money is a very ingrained part of the social definition of masculinity and is often met with rewards, mainly sexual ones and precisely why women seek to marry up.
