No, I really do think you should tell boys to man up — but you should also make it clear what you mean by that.

“Man up” shouldn’t mean “never show any emotion ever”, and generally it doesn’t — but it does get treated like “don’t show emotions other people find inconvenient”. And that’s not the right approach.

What “man up” should mean is “push yourself to be the kind of person other people can depend on in a crisis”. Because that’s extremely valuable. The most important things that you can be in a crisis are A) ready to do what needs doing and B) present.

And even outside of a crisis situation, when you can be someone else’s emotional bedrock, that works to your own real advantage. You’ve made a friend there, even if it’s not necessarily a friend you were looking for. You can leverage that into real opportunities.

I guess my point is: make being a man a genuinely and unquestionably good and aspirational thing by associating it with these helpful and prosocial functions that also translate well into what good fathers were already doing with their sons anyway, and then push boys towards it.

I agree with about half of that. But boys do need to man up sometimes. So do girls. Emotional support is fine but the US has overdone it with catering to every little percieved wrong.
