I read a few volumes. I was impressed with how they acknowledged that civilization would be absolutely devastated without men. It's treated as a true apocalypse scenario with most of the remaining population just waiting to die. There was precisely one community that managed to turn on a back-up generator or something and achieved some semblance of normal life (although the comic makes a big deal about this)

My main complaint is the main character, I just didn't click with him. Also even as the literal last man on earth he can't get laid. His two long-term companions go for each other and apparently even when he travels half the world to reach his long distance girlfriend she reveals that she was gonna dump him before the gendercide. I realize that writer didn't want to turn the situation into a male fantasy, but not a single woman was willing to give a chance to the literal last man on earth? Come on.

The part of the comic that sticks with me most is at one point the main character (still incognito) encounters a group of traveling performers. And they are writing a play about a world without women, where all the women in the world disappeared and its only men left. A reverse of the current state of the world. The part that sticks out to me is how bland that apocalypse sounded. Because they listed like... secretaries, nurses, house-wives, waittresses, school teachers. All the primarily female held professions at the time (this was in the 90s).

And what struck me is how... replacable all of those professions are. Like none of them were actually critical to the functioning of society. And the play revolved just around how lonely all the men got. Not... the end of the world that the comic book was about. Because all the cogs that kept society running would still be running. We just wouldn't have women around anymore. It was such an unbalanced comparison it just threw everything into perspective for me.

The world can't work without men, but it can do just fine without women.

And yes the TV show is absolute dog-shit. So happy it was canceled.

Do you think that if enough men went their own way or opted out of society, we would end up with a struggling infrastructure among other things?

Nothing will change until we reach the point of collapse, because as it stands it's impossible and inconceivable for the majority to go off the grid. We won't be allowed to escape and live out in structures built in nature away from it all. Everything is structured such that for the majority, being on the grid is the only option: especially now. The only people that can afford otherwise are the affluent and property owners or those with an in to those who are, and this will obviously always be the minority.

This doesn't mean I'm inherently against the MGTOW sentiment, but if we actually want to take the term "opting out of society" seriously then it largely remains just that, because you can't have an independent existence from this structure that ensures that all access to vital resources revolves around it, I'm afraid.

If enough men removed themselves from society, a number of women will eventually beg them to come back and a few men will fall for it, even though men are genuinely happier in the company of other men.

I read a book or two of it. I couldn't get into considering how PG it was and how a real man would act in that situation.

I've never read it, but I've read and enjoyed a different comic by the same writer. (Runaways, I think.)

A particular friend of mine loves it, so I assumed it'd be a dumpster fire of misandry. I'm surprised it's getting this many positive reviews on this sub. I might have to give it a chance.

Honestly, I've realized as I've gotten older that I don't really need or want to read fiction.

I'd suggest looking out for a copy of the history of your town, or the town you grew up in. You can learn an awful lot about the families and places around you. I can place the building of my neighborhood on a timeline of my town, and I can place my neighborhood on a timeline for how it was built which explains a lot of the decisions that were made and informs about useful things, like where you might not want to build a shed or what houses are good to buy and what ones aren't.

Hollywood's lies aren't going to make you feel better or make you any more intelligent. Skip that shit, read about things that happened or learn about how things work.
