Real Men Don't Let Others Categorically Define Them.

[–]ExpendableOne 5 points6 points7 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

So then... real women don't join sororities either. And, since feminism is essentially a global cult-like sorority, "real women" aren't feminists either?

The first mistake he makes is that he's speaking anecdotally.

The Greek system has its flaws, but its members graduate more often, generally have higher GPA, tend to see less social and other issues in school, deal with depression and loneliness better, and tend to have better attitudes overall about women than unaffiliated men on campuses around the country. Most of them have mandatory sexual assault or drug/alcohol programs that all members have to go through upon initiation.

His second mistake is that he's speaking from a very temporally limited perspective. Many frat members retain these contacts well into old age, and the long-term benefits of frat membership for them as one of their key social networks has a lot of positives, from fighting depression, helping to deal with divorce or empty nest syndrome, etc.

I'm no fan of the Greek system, trust me, but even a "fabricated" social network is still a social network, and social networks have a lot of inherent positives, just by existing.

As a member of a fraternity, stuff like this absolutely maddens me. These kinds of articles use the same logic as radical feminists do towards this movement: take the worst of the worst, and then post it up as a sweeping example of every single member of that group.

A fraternity is just an organized group of friends. We "buy" friends as much as the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, sports teams, hunting clubs, FFA, College [insert political party here]s, and any other group that charges dues. Its no different that if 40 of your friends got together and said, "let's go buy a house, insurance policies, lawyers, and supplies to have tons of fun, then split the cost". People constantly get the wrong idea about what dues are for some reason. Heck, some chapters have financial assistance or exemptions if you qualify.

"Real men" don't insult entire groups of people based on the acts of a select few. Imagine if we did this to other groups. This line of reasoning could be used to slander every religion, every race, every nation, every culture, every state, city, neighborhood...heck, most families even have a cousin, aunt, or uncle somewhere that is off the rails.

My fraternity has an international leadership conference. Our chapters from across the world come together for a week, learning from one another and forming connections with people across the globe. We have classes in how to detect the kinds of personalities that lead to these atrocious stories everyone hears about, so that we can kick them out during the pledging process. We learn a variety of skills, from hazing prevention methods, to basic etiquette. I met fraternity brothers of every race, religion, and political ideology. I met some gay brothers, some bi-brothers, and a massive army of the rest who would stand behind those guys no matter what. The problem is not with fraternities; it is with groups of self-righteous asshats that group together and pretend to be like the rest of us that are shining examples for the rest of society.

So please, don't be like the tumblr hordes that say that Mens Rights is misogynist because one person using our label said something bad. "Real men" leave the judging and the prejudice to the other team.

A fraternity is just an organized group of friends.

You make it sound like they were friends first and use that association to justify their collective action. We all know it's the other way around. The friendships definitely come, but they aren't the reason the frats exist.

[–]vox_libertatis 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

All friendships start somewhere. Instead of meeting them in a 8:00 a.m. chemistry class, you meet them at a rush event. I got involved because one of the guys that recruited me for the school asked me to come over and play volleyball and eat free food. So I came out for that. Then I realized that everyone was genuinely friendly, and joined.

[–]elebrin 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

That just isn't true. Fraternities generally invite you to join. They don't invite people outside their circle of friends.

[–]The_Nameless_Mist 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I was recruited right from the beer line for a dance at my university residence, by two people that didn't know me from Adam. So were the two friends I was with, who also had no clue who these people were.

Exceptions? Rule? I guess it depends upon how desperate that chapter is for members, right?

[–]elebrin 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Maybe. Different campuses have different cultures, and I think that size pressure from Nationals really is a negative, resulting in recruiting people just to beef up numbers without putting some care into who is being recruited or really developing those recruits for membership. It's something my Fraternity did too, but we spent 4-5 years on size probation. We now do meet their minimum of 25 or more than campus average. We were lucky we didn't get shut down because of extenuating circumstances, specifically having the highest grades on campus of any organization. We were in many ways one of the good examples and we got talked about a lot at the national level.

Thanks for this. I had the same experience with the Greek system. I never, ever, experienced anything but support and love from the others in my chapter. Curdles my cream how butthurt geeds are about the Greek system. If you don't like it, why bitch about it? It doesn't affect you.

[–]robo_octopus 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago* (9 children) | Copy Link

Pretty interesting. As a college student who transferred from one university with a greek system to one without it, I can say definitively that I liked being at the school without it more. There's a very noticeable difference in the culture. But to be honest, the kinds of guys that do the shit you hear about on the news go to both, also. The real argument is "does it make more sense to collect those kinds of guys all up together in one place?" Some days I say yes, and others no.

EDIT: I have no idea why this is being down voted. Just trying to comment on the issue from the perspective of someone who has experienced both.

[–]The_Nameless_Mist 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

I gave you an up vote on principle. There's nothing overtly wrong with your commentary other than the fact you're reasonable.

[–]move_me_brightly -1 points0 points1 point 11 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

How is implying that there is a right to intercede in freedom of association a reasonable position?

[–]BlueDoorFour 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Where did he do that?

[–]move_me_brightly 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

The real argument is "does it make more sense to collect those kinds of guys all up together in one place?"

[–]The_Nameless_Mist 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

If you think that suggests some intervention to stop freedom of association, then I think you're reading WAY too much into that comment. All he's suggesting is that there's no much of a rationale to justify why they hang out together, which is a valid complaint about frats and sororities.

[–]move_me_brightly -1 points0 points1 point 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Why should they have to justify their association to him or anyone else? The entire notion reeks of wannabee authoritarianism.

[–]The_Nameless_Mist 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Someone's ridiculously paranoid.

[–]BlueDoorFour 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Why should they have to justify their association to him or anyone else?

Nobody said that.

They're saying cake has no nutritional value, not that you shouldn't be allowed to eat it.

[–]NadiaJones[S] 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

huh. I guess where I went they had a pretty serious one, it sort of ruled all the social life, so I didn't think about the fact that there are schools without one.

The thing is, I understand why they want to take Fraternity life away from men. Fraternities act as that social support mechanism that so many men are lacking. Some women want to take that support away so that the men have to rely on them for it.

NO men join fraternities. Boys join fraternities.
