It always makes me glad to hear about parents protecting their children from that. I recently talked to my mom about it, she maintains a pro-circumcision stance for the 'cleanliness and health' reasons. Apparently that's what all the parenting books she read over 20 years ago said. And she didn't believe me when I told her it was bull. I don't understand why people cling to those silly arguments. I'm also glad I wasn't born male, because I probably would've been cut and I would resent my parents for it.

I just don't understand why someone would hurt a baby. Especially just for aesthetic reasons. Personally, I find intact penises more attractive anyway.

It's always a plus when movements gain support from religious groups, even small ones. I'm an avowed atheist myself, but I'm overjoyed to see that the Jewish community is at least making some attempt modernizing their views on this issue. The hardest part about ending genital mutilation (both male and female) is going to be killing the traditions behind it. Religious and cultural beliefs are the major contributors to this tradition, if you ask me. We've got to start there.

we need to make the circumcision issue much louder than it is! circumcision is WRONG and UNETHICAL. not to mention completely and utterly stupid.

Dear Samara, I believe your husband's stance on this issue has less to do with with religion and more to do with his struggling with his whole subconscious, internal distress over facing up to all the negative fallout over his own genital mutilation. This is a problem all circumcised males have--even ones who are hard core atheists.

circumcision has nothing to do with god, religion, etc. it's just a form of branding, no matter how sill or irrational, it's like cattle branding. No one want's children to just grow up and be themselves, discover themselves. It's a form of sexual interference even when a child is so far away from sexual curiosity.

Major props to the author for respecting and struggling for her sons' rights. I wish more parents (both male and female) would realize how deeply personal the results of circumcision are to men.

I know I haven't been around much lately, and a lot of the reason is that I'm pregnant with twin boys. Those of you who have seen some of my posts in the past on circumcision may know that my husband and I were divided on this (I was raised Jewish, he was raised mostly Catholic, we're both atheists, I'm violently opposed to circumcision, but he was pretty set on having it done.). Like the woman in the article, this came up briefly when I was pregnant with our first child, but was tabled when we found out she was a girl. I'm extremely relieved that now the issue will no longer be academic (x2!), he is receptive to the idea of leaving them intact. I was scared to death of the kind of fierce divide seen in this couple.

However unnecessary it is, does any man really hold a grudge for being circumcized? I've seen many circumcisions in the hospital and I can tell you that the babies rarely cry or even put up much of a fuss about it. Again, a silly argument, but I have known quite a few women that find an uncirced penis a turn off. Again, let me stress that I understand the silliness of the whole thing, but if I had to pick, I would pick circumcision for myself. I am not putting down this article or anyone that feels strongly against circumcisions, I am simply trying to understand the outrage. I guess I never thought of the controversy.
