I had it (late 90's) as part of "Natural Sciences" (a discipline that agregated various scientific knowledges, as introduction to "specific" disciplines later on. Class had around 12/13y.o.

It was very scientific, and (without realizing where the program was going) I now know it started as "how flowers reproduce" (the principles of polinization, etc,etc,etc), then, later on, a module about "human reproduction" where some concepts we already knew applied, but with new knowledge about the reproductory-system of humans (organs, etc). Of course there's always the smartass kid trying to get a laugh, but it was so scientifically-approached, that the class was actually focused on learning all the correct terms and such. There was also a part of the class (and once, the school brought a doctor in for it) that we could make questions, doubts, etc. It also had a part about sexual-transmitted deseases (we studied a lor of deseases in that class, actually.. It felt kinda like just another module, on any other subject).

We had another class (Society and Civics) that started to talk about "abortion laws" (it was forbidden at that time in my country, unless "rape", "malformation" or "danger to the mother" (only forbidden if not one of those cases). It focused a bit about make us think about having a family (or not), planned parenthood, etc. - Gave us a bit to think about laws and such. That teacher was more about give pros and cons and make us decide (sometimes debate) on what we wanted as a society. Critic analysis.

With the years (around late 2000's), I remember to politicians start the discussion if it was a "too sober" model, vs "you want kids to watch porn?"- other side of debate. I don't really know (or cared) aboutvhow it is today.

My personal opinion (by my own experience, and here's an important detail: I live now in a country that had not any kind of "sexual-education") is that it was very nice and actually prepared me for adulthood. Also: my girlfriend (that never had anything like this) sometimes panicks about his own reproductory system (we are trying to concieve) and has lots of doubts about how it works (I mean, in detail).

Edit: the "Society and Civics" class was not all around what I wrote. It had one or two classes about a theme/idea, then moved on to another.

We had a couple of lessons from our biology teacher, mostly about sexually transmitted diseases, various forms of birth control, and other useful stuff, mostly appropriate for our age group where some kinds were starting to be sexually active.

I don't remember much about non-hetero sex. It probably got mentioned, but it didn't get overwhelming amount of attention.

All I remember from those classes here in the UK is some very clinical drawings of male and female anatomy (cross-section, to show how the insides are) and... I dunno, I guess some stuff about condoms and STDs?

I'll admit I didn't attend school nearly as much as I should have at the time due to "difficulties", but I'm not aware of it being very focussed on the emotional side, or really much of anything about intergender relations.

Basically just "here's how the body works, here's how they fit together when doing the sex, and here's how to not get a sick penis/vagina when sharing bodily fluids".

That was 20 years ago though, so maybe things have changed.

Edit: I do also remember in primary school, towards the end (so maybe 11-12 years old?) we were divided into male and female groups, and us boys were put in a room and given a demonstration of how tampons work, with a glass of water. Wasn't really sex education, or part an ongoing class of any kind, as far as I remember, but I distinctly remember that room and that demonstration.

Sex education for us was part of health science/PE. I remember our P.E. teacher spending a day talking about birth control/condoms and then spending a few days talking about why women shouldn't drink or smoke when they are pregnant. We were never told about consent or abuse or any type of contact besides PIV. All stuff I plan to teach my kids. I'm not sure what they are teaching in school now, but I know for sure we talk to the kids about consent, signs of abuse, and how to be safe with any sort of contact.

Been a long time since I've been in school, but iirc in one of our science classes in middle school (age around 11-14) we had a broad teaching about how reproduction worked in mammals, I assume we probably talked specifically about humans at some point but probably not for long/detailed. In high school (14-18) Health was a required course and it went into a little more detail about human reproduction and the various components, stds were mentioned but not heavily discussed. Sex itself wasn't really talked about. I was kind of surprised years later watching movies where teachers were showing how to put on a condom and other such things and found out some schools really go into detail about sex, so I guess it really depends on the part of the country you're in.

Honestly (que the downvotes), I think the way my school did instruction was the best way. Besides teaching the obvious; that sex incurs risk of pregnancy and disease, I don't think its the place of schools to really teach about sex and certainly not until kids are older. Unfortunately in my country kids are being taught about sex as young as four now in a variety of confusing ways, and I think rather than solving issues between boys and girls men and women this will just cause different problems later on (and already is imo).

While I think schools are a great resource, I think a variety of things should be left to the parents to individually discuss with their child. For a period of time Christianity was heavily proselytized if not outright taught in some places, and people (rightly imo) stood up and said religion is for the state to teach and they've done a good job of removing religion from schools. Unfortunately I think they need to do the same with politics and some other issues, but that is meeting all sorts of mad resistance and likely isn't going to happen.

I think the pros and cons are pretty dependent on what the education actually teaches, but generally speaking I doubt it makes a large impact either way. In the modern day, kids are going to learn that sex can cause pregnancy and disease even without schools teaching it. Maybe they'll learn more of the science, names of body parts, etc. and I'm all for them being taught in that way, but at the same time don't think they'd really suffer without it either. Just my two cents.

Teach as much as you realistically can

Sex Ed in general is so bad across the world, the quality of life improvements to health / relationships / sex lives is so incredibly valuable

Ignorance just breeds all sorts of complications and problems
