I'm not saying she deserves nothing, because she did give up things so Jeff could succeed, but 50% is way too high. Maybe like 20%, because the truth is that a lot of Jeff's money goes into the company and none of the money she's getting will go into it. It's not fair for her to get just as much as him who built and led the company to success

[–]InformalCriticism 16 points17 points18 points 7 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

I don't see why ot has to be proportional to his success. Give her enough to reasonably live and if she fucks that up, it's on her.

[–]ScreendeadGames 2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This is way more sensible.

[–]Potatolover3 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yeah true, I just kinda said a random percentage because it's so hard to think how much money he has. Like even .5% is enough to live on for awhile. But it's still his money and his company

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Shit, id settle for 10 percent or even just five ...

[–]Mode1961 5 points6 points7 points 7 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

You say she gave up things so that he could succeed, BUT the real question should be, "Did her giving things up, actually help him succeed".

I don't know this couple at all, I barely heard of him (or her) but if she gave up a job and allowed him to go to school to get an education that he, in turn, parlayed into his vast fortune, then yes, she deserves a portion, perhaps even as high as 50%.

BUT, if she gave up stuff but that stuff di nothing to increase his wealth NO she doesn't deserve anything.

[–]valenin 2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Here's a thought experiment: replace the people in question.

Pair Bezos with an average dude and imagine where they'd be today.

Replace the wife instead. Imagine where they'd be today.

Ms. Bezos might be an above average woman in economic terms. From what I hear she probably is. But he's almost unique. He could have done something similar with any one of millions of women. She... couldn't do the same.

He's that rich because he built one of the biggest companies on the planet. She's that rich because she did something half the people in the world do. Is she that much better at it than they are?

[–]SchalaZeal01 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

BUT, if she gave up stuff but that stuff di nothing to increase his wealth NO she doesn't deserve anything.

If the stuff that were given up can be paid off to a contractor for not even 1% of the half, who will do super good job (think hiring an Harvard teacher to be your kid's tutor, a Gordon Ramsey level chef to make food, a super good driver, and a Mary Poppins nanny), then it wasn't worth as much as shares in a company. We're talking 800 million $ for those, if its 1% of half.

If she gave him tips about investing in X or Y, or starting A or B project, and it paid off, definitely.

A woman is 50% of a marriage. How they split duties within their marriage is their own business. They are each entitled to half of what they built together during the marriage. And as they are a unit they built everything together.

[–]velocispider 5 points6 points7 points 7 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

That literally does not make any sense and honestly you have to be insanely delusional to claim something like that. Moreover, I wish the above mentioned "They are each entitled to half of what they built together.." scenario would also apply to how much time each side of the marriage gets to spend with their child. I am actually so furious right now I could go on a novel long rant on this topic.

[–]Valencia_Mariana-1 points 7 years ago* [recovered] (5 children) | Copy Link

It doesn't matter, during the marriage everything is done together.

If amazon was before the the marriage then fair enough but it wasn't.

I'm all for men's rights but this is a pointless discussion.

There are actual issues to get angry about:

Men being forced to give assets to women they never married (being treated as a married couple under law)

Men being forced to give premarital assets to a woman.

They are both wrong.

This is standard marriage. What's the problem?

[–]velocispider 2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

"During marriage everything is done together" - This is actually nonsense. Think of it please I beg you to be open minded: Their marriage is the major part of their private life and in addition they have never really shared a lot with media. Thus, you simply cannot know how their marriage works or what they have done or have not done together. Your claims are nothing but fabricated random thoughts and I am honestly just rooting for you to open your eyes and examine a case from as many different perspectives as possible before acting so stubborn and delusional.

[–]Valencia_Mariana-2 points 7 years ago* [recovered] (3 children) | Copy Link

You don't understand. Everything in their marriage is together. If it was or if it wasn't doesn't matter. This is the reason you get married. It doesn't matter who did what... Its marriage, its 50/50 for everything they did during the marriage.

I'm open minded and I understand you. But it doesn't matter that he is responsible for amazon. She is responsible for the kids, in all likely hood she probably raised the children too, is never allowed to see then again? Does he lose the right to call them his kids? What she did or did not do that contributed to the success of amazon is impossible to calculated. What if he never married and he instead spent his life looking for a life partner to have children with and never really focused on anything else. What if he married someone else who put more pressure on him to raise children and so he didn't have time to make amazon.

It's marriage, it doesn't matter who earned the money they both had to work.

You also need to be a little more open minded here. I mean, I get you bro, honestly I do. But I also believe in marriage and I want a woman to raise my children. That means she will forgo all money earning potential (in a world where she likely has more money making potential due to her gender) and so if we split up i will expect her to have halve on the finances just as much as I expect half of the kids. Who I love more than any amount of money.

[–]SchalaZeal01 5 points6 points7 points 7 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

But I also believe in marriage and I want a woman to raise my children.

A very competent Mary Poppins level live-in nanny won't cost you 80 billions, even if she does the sex part. Heck, if she costs 10 millions, you got robbed.

[–]Valencia_Mariana2 points 7 years ago* [recovered] (1 child) | Copy Link

I get you. But I'd like my children to have a mother and a father. Not a nanny and a father.

[–]DarkButter 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I'm sorry, but using "farther" and not father 2 times is really making you seem like a troll, and that you are fishing for downvotes.

[–]nocivo -1 points0 points1 point 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

And that is what needs to change. It should not be automatically shared. It should be the both picking what is his or hers. If they want to split an account of money or a house put both names on it. If only has a name in a divorce it should be only of that person. This way the person who earns the money need to pick if he drops the salary on a joint account or on his account then transfer to hers account or the joint account. In the end should be the people who choose what is splitter and not the state.

[–]KiloYankee5E1F 18 points19 points20 points 7 years ago (11 children) | Copy Link

So wrong... Females feel entitled to everything.

[–]iiValentine -3 points-2 points-1 points 7 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link

They have been married for 15 years and he cheated on her, she isn't entitled she is deserving, you would hate it if a feminist said your comment about men

[–]KiloYankee5E1F 4 points5 points6 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

LMAO what? That doesn't even make sense. Females shouldn't get shit in a divorce. He cheated on her? Who fucking cares? She doesn't deserve anything. He earned that, she didn't earn dick.

[–]nocivo 3 points4 points5 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

She should get something but not this amount.

In my opinion the automatically split in half should be killed. Everyone should have their account and the stuff in their names. If you have anything shared split in 50. That is fine. Was the choice of both but if i have a house only in my name it should be only mine. This way people and bot the state will choose what to split.

[–]KiloYankee5E1F 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

Now she's going to be the richest woman I'm the world for being a gold digger.

[–]iiValentine 3 points4 points5 points 7 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

She was married before he had billions, that's not what a gold digger does, also they both signed for 50% of their life when they got married, billions of dollars doesn't change that

[–]KiloYankee5E1F 5 points6 points7 points 7 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Yeah that's stupid. She should not be entitled to his fortune. That's why marriage is for retards. Never trust a hoe.

[–]iiValentine 2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

She is entitled to it because they both agreed to that when they got married, hate the game don't hate the player, married is overrrated and mainly fucks the man in most situations

[–]KiloYankee5E1F 3 points4 points5 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Yeah but that's just a policy, and it's garbage. It should be abolished. And no one would say that she's entitled to it. She'd be laughed out. Marriage is depraved and for suckers.

[–]iiValentine 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I completely agree that it should be abolished but those were the terms when she signed up, just because he got rich doesn't change those terms, she could be asking for a lot more but to me 50% of fair wether he had $1000 or $1 Billion because they agreed on that, he really screwed himself over, this isn't her fault that she wants what is in her contract

[–]Mode1961 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

SO after they divorce, is still obligated to continue to do whatever she was doing while they were married.

[–]boringcarpets 5 points6 points7 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This is why gold digging exists, its promoted as a genuine strategy, no, an entitlement

[–]throwawaylifespan 4 points5 points6 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The trouble is that when the genders are reversed, it's "not so much".

[–]Akesgeroth 3 points4 points5 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Jeff Bezos' divorce should be a warning to all men.

[–]marks1995 4 points5 points6 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Trying to justify that she has earned half of his fortune is absurd.

But this is a tough one for me. On one hand, he cheated and I wouldn't expect her to have to stay in the marriage after that. So part of me says infidelity should be taken into account in divorce settlements. If she had cheated, I would prefer she get almost nothing.

But then another part of me says, "What do you do if you're unhappy?". He might have been unhappy with the marriage for years, but filing for divorce would have cost him half, so I kind of understand taking your chances by cheating.

[–]fengpi 22 points23 points24 points 7 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link

Jilly is insane. Just let us get that out of the way here at the beginning, before I say anything else. Jilly is insane.

Moving on....

What divorces like these show us is how little we value the often invisible and unpaid labor that so many women do to enable their husbands to build wealth and find professional success.

Jilly... do you really think this woman's vagina built Amazon? Do you really, honestly believe that? I don't think you do.

You're a Marxist, are you not? You believe that capitalism is evil and exploitative, yes? Yes. Alas, now you are rationalizing the transfer of massive capital-- filthy exploitative theft from the proletariat-- into someone's already super-wealthy hands. Why? Because that filthy capitalist happens to have the same sex organs as you do. Unthinking gender tribalism based upon gonads is what you are doing here. Now just you think about that.

No, as stupid and deluded as you are, I don't think even you believe in the righteousness of this. Down in the bone-ignorant depths of your rotten grasping opportunistic victim-mentality-addled feminist soul, I don't truly believe that you believe many of the words that you are writing in this screed. I can see through this facade, and you know that someone else out there can possibly see through this facade as well.

You're shilling for ill-gotten wealth now. Nakedly. That's what you're doing. And I suspect, in the back of your twisted olive-sized brain, you are fully aware of what a venal cynic you are now. You are having some trouble justifying this to yourself, I can tell.

And for what? You think you can get invited to fancy dinners at this woman's mansion if you come out in full-throated support of her? Is that what you're after now?

I have no other words for you.

[–]nocivo 6 points7 points8 points 7 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

What they don’t understand is the life she got was paid by his labor. Amazon paid the bills. Doing that invisibles work is the least she can do and I bet she had Mexican people doing the majority.

[–]tableender 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Interesting that he looks like a Bond villain and his new fluff looks like a Bond girl.

[–]progunner420 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Not saying I agree with a 50/50 split but for a smart man he should’ve thought about that when he married her. I’m sure everyone heard the horrors of a divorce growing up and through their young adult life.

1 million or a trillion, makes no difference.

[–]aussiepowerranger 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

No.

[–]Rbox 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I would assume the real question is does she get half of his money, and assets? Which would not include Amazon as a Corporation. Amazon is a corporation and not funded by him/them, it makes it's own money from which he gains a salary and or profit from investment. I've always wonder how this is supposed to work. ??? Any business majors give me some proper insight on this?

[–]tom9152 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

'Their' money is from under paying employees so little that welfare keeps workers alive. 'Their' money should have been put into the paychecks. Neither he nor she should have the money in the first place.

[–]op266 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

She really doesn't deserve it, she haven't worked hard for that money.
