It's a description of how upsetting the male leer can be as felt by a straight man walking through a gay area of San Francisco. Before he thought women were overreacting but after the trauma of spending time in a gay area where men leered at him he realises how upsetting it is to be objectified.

On one hand, I appreciate the sentiment. It's never cool to openly leer in a way that anyone reasonable would find uncomfortable.

On the other, if you read the whole comment thread, there's a lot of really disturbing stuff which is demonising male sexuality. I think the best response is from a gay guy reacting to the undercurrent of homophobia and hopeless prudishness:

I hope this helps, and like all gays I hope to be helpful: fixing your hair, setting you up with my girlfriends and otherwise interacting with you in an entirely emasculated, asexual, non-threatening environment (even when the environment is a gay bar!)

I find it worrying that normal male behaviour (yes, I will check people out, yes I will make sexual advances) is interpreted as aggresive, rapey and generally bad.

For the record, when I'm in the gay part of town I see no harm in being checked out and I have found gay men to be just as competent as anyone at reading signals and respecting boundaries.
