Thinking about getting a vasectomy, input?

I'm 27. I got one about 2 years ago, not long before my first serious relationship broke up (we already had one kid).

I do regret getting it, even though I still have a hard time trusting women. With my current kid I volunteer with his Scouting group and really enjoy it. I can continue doing things like that, but kids do bring an extra something to your life.

At 18, I think you should wait. Statistically, you will probably change your mind about kids. Until you're in at least your late 20's just be diligent about condom use (~~even if~~ especially if she tells you she's on the pill)

I'll be honest, I am 40 and I don't know anyone who had one and regretted it. I know men of all ages from all walks of life, maybe two dozen guys at least, who have had it done. The youngest is 30 and the oldest is my ex's Uncle John who had it done so long ago it was fairly major (we're talking the 1980's).

I faced the decision at 30 and was with someone who did not want kids. I didn't get it, met someone else at 38, had kids, and often regret NOT having gotten it at 30. I love my kids, but... I really do wish I had my life back much of the time.

Not a man, but I do want to give you this advice; freeze some sperm. You're 18, and you have a long life ahead of you full of many uncertainties. Who knows, maybe you'll grow fond of kids, or maybe not, but better to have a backup.

If you have the money and the few days (to week) for healing, then I see nothing wrong with it. Since you are young you can expect people trying to stop you. My friend couldn't get her tubes tied because she was twenty, and you may have a few people trying to stop you from making "a huge mistake". Freezing sperm may help this, but be prepared to explain your side.

With frozen sperm there are few if any negatives.

I got one not much older than you are know, I can say that getting that operation and living the MGTOW lifestyle is the best thing I have done for myself. If you have a GF in the future, do not tell her you have had the operation. Keep a ace up your sleeve in case she says "I'm pregnant" then pull out the paper that says you shoot blanks and watch the tears roll.

I'm childfree, which means I never want kids. The process was quick and simple, and the security it gives me is great. No need to worry about condoms (in a presumably monogamous relationship), her remembering or forgetting the pill, etc.

At 18, I'd say wait. Not because you may not know already (though if you have doubts, DEFINITELY wait), but because if at 21 you go in for the procedure and say, "I've known for four years already" it makes a much stronger case.

I highly recommend it. I had it done when I was 18. I would also highly recommend freezing some sperm prior, though. I know I don't want to have any kids, but I also know that what I wanted for my life 5 years ago is not what I want now, which probably won't be what I want down the line. My point is, give yourself the flexibility of changing your mind even if you are damn sure you won't.

This may not be a popular view around here, but I wouldn't recommend it at 18. Your life can change in so many ways that are unfathomable to you now.

It's great if you're A) in a monogomous relationship in which you're sure you don't want kids (Doesn't do any good for casual sex since you should wear a condom anyway for desease), and B) are sure you'll never want any more kids, with any partner, ever. And I just don't think that determination can be made at 18.

Yes I know people are telling you to freeze sperm, etc. but the 'old fashioned' method of conception is far more desirable for many reasons.

I advise putting sperm on ice if you do, just in case. Could also go a long way to convincing a doctor into letting you have the procedure.

Yup I am 22 and I am going to get a vasectomy after I graduation from college in 2012. I think you should get a vasectomy if that is what you really want. My mind is made up and no on is going to pressure me to have kids. I am a proud SINB (Single Income No Brats).

If you think your opinion of kids might change then have some sperm frozen. Vasectomies can also be reversed.

Some of the best vasectomy reversal success rates reported in the literature for vasovasotomy are a patency rate of 99% with a pregnancy rate of 64%, not including couples where the woman was infertile. This means that in the hands of the surgeon who quoted these rates, he was able to restore sperm flow in the vas tube 99% of the time, and this allowed a pregnancy rate of 64%. Reference

I had one. The evidence is inconclusive but it seems to be linked to Benign Prostate Hypertrophy, which is not that serious.

Otherwise it is the trade-off between possibly not being able to have children later on, versus "surprise" babies if you do not have a vasectomy and the misery that that can entail.
