The system is sexist when it is an obligation based on your gender. If it's something you decide to do, as long as you're not imposing it on anyone, that's your choice. There's no reason why you should be obligated. Women can earn their own money.

The way my girlfriend and I do it is simple : I suggest we go out to dinner, I pay. She suggests we go out, she pays. We decide we haven't gone out in a while and decide together to go somewhere, we both pay.

I would take turns with my partner paying for outings instead of splitting the check each time; trying to even the costs as close to 50:50 as possible.

I think that the expectation that men pay for dates is something that needs to go since feminism has effectively removed most if not all obligations on women in relationships.

As for what you do once in a relationship, I think it depends upon the relationship. If you are going to have the relationship follow a somewhat communist model (from each according to his ability, to each according to his needs) you need to make sure that this is being followed in other ways too, and not just selectively in areas where one partner benefits.

Edit: What I mean is that you shouldn't just apply that model financially, if the other partner has more time off or a better ability to do something then they should probably contribute more in those areas to the relationship, under the "communist" model.

Personally, I prefer to pay. Might be a bit out of the times, especially since splitting the bill is something my parents did, but I don't want my girlfriend to have to do anything. If I could get a job that paid well enough that I could take care of both of us, I'd be happy. That's not to say I wouldn't want her to work or pay for some of her won stuff, but I feel like I should be able to take care of her.

I prefer to pay, though my wife and I share everything so really we just take turns paying for things with OUR money. However when I was dating I preferred to pay because that's how I was raised and I enjoy it.

I didn't pay for women who demanded it, or made a big deal out of things if they had to cover a portion of the date. No go for me. I don;t like needy expectant mooch's..male or female.

To me this issue seems as trivial as "men take up too much space on public transportation." There are no laws forcing us to pay or to stay with women that expect us to. If you want things to be different change your dating policy.

Edit: I think it's a fine topic for discussion, but it's more suited to /r/oney or /r/askmen than this one.
