The top upvoted comments appear to question the mother’s perception which I find encouraging, they don’t appear to immediately believe that the mothers are the victim simply because they have claimed to be.

I don’t wish to downplay parental alienation because I understand it is a very real issue however, I also understand that it is usually the father that is the victim and that it is more common for mothers to use their children as a ‘weapon’ against a father and for mothers to make false allegations against fathers in order to deny access with family courts (at least in the UK) enabling abusive mothers to deny their children’s and the father’s rights so I have to question the validity of these mother’s claims as I understand that it is extremely (unfortunately) unusual for a father to have custody of their children. Although I am not going to dismiss that some mothers may very well be victims of parental alienation, I think it is another example of how wrong it is to use gender as a decision making tool in custody decisions, both parents are equally important in a child’s life and only in those cases where there is tangible/ corroborated evidence that a child is in danger of being harmed, either physically or mentally, should the state be involved in protecting that child by limiting or excluding access.

Tbh, I'm not sure what to think about the article. In any relationship breakdown you get two very different stories being told a lot of the time and the truth is usually somewhere in the middle. But the fact that the mothers are blaming a 3rd party rather than their son/daughter directly and the son/daughter usually blames the parent is interesting. It makes me think that the mother is at fault but I can't explain why.

It'd be interesting to have a study done that gets information from both people.

A lot of the comments from r/science are very critical of the mothers in this case, labeling them as narcissists. I don’t see this as being framed the way OP’s title implies.

So using children as weapon and portraying you're a victim when you're not (in 80% court cases) doesn't help no one and especially children. Shocking.
