Totally ignores that people also transition the other direction.

[–]youropinionsaredumb 3 points4 points5 points 4 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Same principle for transmen, though: A strong perception of a misogynist world, internalized, turned into dysphoria.

It's gender chauvinism that's creating trans people; The reason it's so prevalent now is because the internet is ubiquitous, and the most extreme views on are on display for children everywhere. It's easy to cherry pick who the enemy is based on your born-as gender, and then you internalize the views of the enemy and gain dysphoria.

The trans issue is a societal issue about gender, but no single gender is entirely to blame.

[–]sklarah 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Saying that people are "acquiring" gender dysphoria due to socially learned hatred of their sex/gender seems pretty baseless.

Gender dysphoria has famously been observed as a lifelong affliction with the majority of trans people claiming they've felt it from their earliest memories or at least early adolescence. And there's significant evidence that it's rooted in neural anatomy and how sex hormones affect brain formation, which is why there's almost always anatomical distress as well, not just social distress.

I think very soon we'll be asking what gender dysphoria "is" in the way people are asking what a man or a woman "is".

[–]sklarah 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I think very soon we'll be asking what gender dysphoria "is"

It's a definable mental disorder. It has specific criteria. What other definition are you implying exists?

in the way people are asking what a man or a woman "is".

This is just a terminology dispute though because these words are used in many different ways by different people depending on the culture and time period. Gender dysphoria doesn't really have any contested meanings.

No, it’s not. I can promise this from experience. I’m transgender, and the only reason I transitioned is because my body made me constantly suicidal and now it doesn’t. It’s no more complicated than that.

[–]youropinionsaredumb 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

"Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate."

Your perspective is appreciated.

[–]PeterWrightMGTOW[S] 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

That's why it's an article instead of a book. Lol.

But I'm sure you can muster a comparable reverse template for transmen to see if/how it fits.

[–]countrymace 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I can assure you from experience, nothing if the sort applies to trans men. Can’t speak for trans women to necessarily refute the article, but I imagine it’s similar.

[–]II11llII11ll 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Brilliant. And the notion of “aggrieved female entitlement” is something I’ve experienced in reaction to an interest in raising trans issues at work.

[–]WakenQuaken 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

hmm

iam a dude

i felt misandry feelings and hate that iam a dude, and idolize females look good and are cuute and nice etc and dudes are assholes blah etc

but yeah iam too dude for trans things,

but i could feel it, i try to understand what is trans and homosexual thing and i can only take wild guesses and to me it feels like if i was to become that, .. the way from me is that i do feel misandry ...

Nah. Sorry.

[–]manicraccoon 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (14 children) | Copy Link

Being trans is not a goddamn trend.

[–]Viesegel 5 points6 points7 points 4 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link

How do you know?

[–]manicraccoon 3 points4 points5 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Personal experience.

[–]-Soggy-Potato- 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

Commons sense? Beg you’re joking

Who the fuck would genuinely want to be transgender to be trendy? Struggling through years of hormones and potentially surgery would be enough on it’s own to snub out any idea that it’s a ‘’’’trend’’’’.

Not even scratching the surface of the abuse, hatred, ignorance and intolerance society has towards trans people. Obviously no one is going to ‘choose’ to become an immensely marginalised

Why’s it even a question lol

[–]Viesegel 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

You could also ask why anyone would choose to get a life threatening eating disorder, but anorexia by peer pressure is a real thing.

Obviously no one is going to ‘choose’ to become an immensely marginalised

If you pick the right social group, you will be celebrated, not marginalized.

[–]Capable-War-3020 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link

What do you mean by picking the right social group? The black community ostracizes me because I'm queer. In the queer community, I'm ostracized because I'm black. There's no one group that celebrates me except the group I form around myself that do and they can be from different "social groups" themselves.

I'm a trans woman, men never celebrated me or helped me unless they had an ulterior motive. I grew up in the deep south away from internet and my upbringing was ultra conservative. I still wished I had a woman's body. No peer pressure. No exposure to any other trans people yet I still had this yearning.

When I came to the realization before I transitioned that men don't give a shit about me, it was really freeing. If men don't give a shit about me as a man and still won't as a trans woman, then I might as well live the way I always wanted as a trans woman. I don't need the celebration of cis people anymore. All of you are hypocrites that only pretend to care when it's advantageous for you to do so.

[–]Viesegel 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I grew up in the deep south away from internet and my upbringing was ultra conservative.

Then you're an exception, and this isn't about you.

[–]-Soggy-Potato- 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

That is coming from a place of ignorance though

Disorders aren’t uniform, the factors that influence eating disorders can’t and shouldn’t be applied to gender identity disorders

You’re making unscientific claims, you need ‘causation’ in order for ur argument to gain any respect or relevance. All you’re doing is making a totally inappropriate link between two totally different disorders

Then you’re using that unscientific claim to invalidate trans people, like, what’s the point? What do you gain from lying and saying gender dysphoria is a trend, it’s gross

[–]Viesegel 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

you’re using that unscientific claim to invalidate trans people

No, it doesn't invalidate them. Their feelings are still real.

What do you gain from lying and saying gender dysphoria is a trend

It's not about me gaining anything. And it's not a "lie", because that would imply that we know the truth. It is a fact that gender dysphoria has grown a lot in recent decades. How do you explain that?

[–]-Soggy-Potato- 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

You are invalidating the gender identity by implying it is a trend

It is a fact that gender dysphoria has grown a lot in recent decades. How do you explain that?

‘Grown’ is a disingenuous way to phrase it

It’s like saying more people are gay because it’s ‘trendy’, ignoring the role tolerance and acceptance plays.

As societies become more inclusive, the rates of marginalised groups tends to rise. So e.g. as acceptance towards homosexuality has risen, so have these so called ‘rates’.

This isn’t because people are seeing homosexuality as ‘cool’ or ‘trendy’, it’s because the people who were always gay are able to express themselves without being discriminated against as much. Less people are hiding

That same vein logic applies to trans people, historically they’ve been discriminated against, but as their identity has become more recognised and tolerated so has the number of people coming out

I’m sure there’s a valid area of discussion for this idea of ‘confusion’, a select few people identifying with being trans when maybe they perhaps aren’t. But that discussion should absolutely not be presented as an opposition to trans people as an entire group

(Especially since it being a ‘trend’ isn’t really a good or remotely representative answer for why people would go through many layers and years of marginalisation and the process of transitioning)

[–]Viesegel 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

‘Grown’ is a disingenuous way to phrase it

No, it's just a word that describes the first derivative of the number of people who report feelings of gender dysphoria.

This isn’t because people are seeing homosexuality as ‘cool’ or ‘trendy’

Has there been a similarly significant rise in the number of people coming out as gay/lesbian in the last decade ?

[–]-Soggy-Potato- 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I’d assume if you look at demographics on people who identify as being gay, that number would see rises from times when homosexual relationships were illegal / gay marriage was legalised etc

Even modern examples you can look at professional sports, how in football you’d be hard pressed to find any openly gay professional players, simply because it’s almost taboo in the industry. People are scared to come out, afraid of the public backlash. As society become more accepting, more people would end up coming out

[–]PeterWrightMGTOW[S] 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

No. But coming out is. Also, are you sure it's not a fad or trend among some isolated demographics?

[–]manicraccoon 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Not saying it isn't possible.

[–]annierosewood 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Bulimia and anorexia were in the 80s. Ideas spread.
