Why do feminists hate femininity?

Lets look at the evidence here.

Doritos finds that, generally speaking, women enjoy Doritos but do not like to eat them "on the move" due to the size, crunch and dust. Doritos find a solution to this by creating a version of Doritos aimed at women on the move that lack the size, crunch and dust.

What does the video linked in the article say:

"Listen. We here at Good Mythical Morning think that women have the right to crunch just as loudly and obnoxiously as men do."

This instantly tells us what is on the feminists' minds. Their spin is that by creating a line of crisps aimed at women's needs, Doritos is declaring that women should not be allowed to eat regular Doritos because the patriarchy doesn't want women to be crunching loudly on crisps in public. The fact that it is an option, created for women, based on their requirements, with the option remaining to buy the full size bags, doesn't even come into it.

They ignored what was clearly stated and twisted the whole narrative. Nobody said women weren't allowed to crunch crisps in public, they said that women typically didn't want to, so they came up with a solution.

Their mistake? Forgetting the lengths that these foaming at the mouth, bat-shit crazy "feminists" will go to, to try and manufacture this oppressive conspiracy to marginalise women.

It's basically extreme self-centredness that we see with most consumer goods issues.

"Why is girls' stuff pink? I don't like pink?"

"Because most girls do like pink"

"I don't care. I don't like pink. Nothing should be pink."

"But we are here to make money so we make the product in a way that gives us the highest sales. That generally means pink for girls."

"I don't care about anyone else, I only care about me. I don't like pink. You're saying I have to have pink because I'm a girl."

"Well, that's not really how this works. It's about appealing to the mass market."

"But how does that benefit me?"

"Uhhh...."

Ultimately feminists believe that women don't like to crunch chips loudly in public because the patriarchy has oppressed them into that desire. It's not a campaign against Doritos, it's once again a campaign against the invisible patriarchy. Women aren't allowed to be women because the patriarchy has historically defined femininity. So, aparently redefining femininity entails that women be made into the patriarchy-defined masculine (loud, obnoxious, aggressive), and that men be made into the patriarchy-defined feminine (by saying that masculinity is "toxic" and encouraging men to be softer). It makes no sense, at all. I honestly don't know how it's come to be this way. But then again, feminism is about revenge and power.

I do not want to be a part of the world they are trying to create.

I can imagine "feminists" trying to raise their children in a "Neutral" way, but they end up forcing the girls to behave like boys and the boys to behave like girls.

"No. You're a boy so you have to play with Barbie and wear a dress to show how gender is a social construct."

"No. You're a girl so you have to go into STEM to show how women can do anything men can do."

[–]thaw334 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I completely agree.

I actually used to reject the biological definitions for masculinity and femininity, but I think there's a good basis for these understandings. I think the problem has been that we have historically forced people into embodying masculine and feminine roles, when in reality humans are more malleable. Women mostly embody femininity, while men mostly embody masculinity, but both embody the other to some degree, and there are also outliers that exist entirely apart from that framework. We need to build a non-restrictive society that also accounts for the majority of people who will prefer to embody and express what we would call "traditional" roles.

There is a theory, called the minority rule, that you can read about here which predicts that if a minority of people are distributed evenly within the majority population, the majority will adopt the practices of the minority. It's explained quite well in the article, if you would read it. What I see now is that we have a minority of outliers to our traditional model basically forcing the minority into subverting it. This observation strays a bit from the minority rule argument, which uses the example of halal and kosher products. Companies are manufacturing kosher products more than you realize because it is easier and cheaper than creating a separate division of kosher products. The majority can eat kosher without conflict, but the minority cannot eat non-kosher without conflict. In our case, in terms of traditional definitions of masculine and feminine, we will probably see a move away from the strong voice of the minority, simply because we can't adopt their confusing perspective without harm to ourselves (see: men's issues).

In all, I think it won't be a problem. Society will come to know feminism's tyranny, just because the majority has a sense now that something is "off". You can see this with the backlash that resulted from #metoo. But, yes, we will have an entire generation raised on skewed feminist doctrine. We will have an entire generation of very confused little boys and girls.

Because feminists are (in general) more masculine than "normal" women:

Abstract:

The feminist movement purports to improve conditions for women, and yet only a minority of women in modern societies self-identify as feminists. This is known as the feminist paradox. It has been suggested that feminists exhibit both physiological and psychological characteristics associated with heightened masculinization, which may predispose women for heightened competitiveness, sex-atypical behaviors, and belief in the interchangeability of sex roles. If feminist activists, i.e., those that manufacture the public image of feminism, are indeed masculinized relative to women in general, this might explain why the views and preferences of these two groups are at variance with each other. We measured the 2D:4D digit ratios (collected from both hands) and a personality trait known as dominance (measured with the Directiveness scale) in a sample of women attending a feminist conference. The sample exhibited significantly more masculine 2D:4D and higher dominance ratings than comparison samples representative of women in general, and these variables were furthermore positively correlated for both hands. The feminist paradox might thus to some extent be explained by biological differences between women in general and the activist women who formulate the feminist agenda.

[–]BaileysBaileys 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

False question. They don't hate feminity. I understand that's not a popular opinion here because most mras dislike feminism, but we have to be above this type of self-congratulatory stuff.

I'm surprised, I'd think as MRAs we'd also not be too fond of food being specifically designed for women. Like women need to be treated extra well. I personally find it rather silly, crisps for women.

[–]Vandechoz 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yeah I think it's more of a semantic issue that they are taking. If they called them "Doritos for femmes" or something using their ever-changing language, they would be fine with it.

[–]Rethgil 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Oh is that why so many feminists openly attack women who voice their support for femininity?

Because you think you found a weakness in one issue about crisps?

(Stifling my laughter)

[–]Brusanan 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

What the hell are you talking about? This is marketing. They figure out what a demographic wants, and then make a product that they will buy.

Recognizing that men and women have different likes, interests and goals is a very important part of the MRM platform.

[–]Rethgil 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Feminists hate femininity. No aspect of the Doritos thing disproves that.

Much of femininity is related to aspects that men find appealing about women: softness, kindness, delicacy, having a certain kind of appearance, domestic skills, childrearing skills, etc. This sets up certain expectations for which kind of women are most desirable to have relationships with. Therefore, purely as a mating strategy, feminists are opposed to any expectations placed on women which might limit their ability to gain a partner, but particularly to gain a partner which meets or exceeds their own certain expectations.

On the other hand, there are also feminists who don't feel like aspects of femininity not directly linked to men's choice of women, mostly childbearing and raising children, is not "honored" enough. What this usually means is that they're upset we don't live in a society where women are viewed as mystical goddesses for their ability to give birth. And what this usually translates to is believing that women should be paid handsomely for giving birth and raising children. These are the ones who like to make yogurt and bread from their vaginal yeast or jam from their menstrual blood.

[–]Rethgil 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Because feminists are often ugly so become bitter about the attractive girls as they grow up, and the men who head straight to the pretty girls and ignore them.

Also because this is then passed on from one generation to the next, when they are raised by single parent mothers who are man haters, often for the same reason. They grow up hearing endless comments sniping against feminine women and again, the men who like them.

[–]Brusanan 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I find it hilarious that Feminists don't hesitate to relentlessly attack strong, successful women in positions of power the second they seem to slightly disagree with the dogma of Feminism. This woman should be an idol to any non-batshit-crazy Feminist, but those aren't the Feminists who are allowed a voice by the Feminist mobs.

The #1 goal of Feminism is always to perpetuate Feminism. The #2 goal of Feminism is to empower radical Feminists. "Empowering women" only comes into play when it doesn't conflict with goals 1 and 2, which isn't often.

[–]thaw334 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

This is about the definition of femininity. We don't really know what femininity is, or if it is even a valid concept. But most of us believe that femininity involves certain traits-- these are softness, kindness, love, protection/nurture, etc. Masculinity is strength, protection, drive/willpower, strategy, etc.

The truth is, most people embody these traits to different degrees. Women historically embody our feminine definition more than our masculine definition, but they still have these "masculine" traits. The same goes for men. This may be biological (but probably can be explained a good deal by biology) but that doesn't necessarily matter. The benefit to embodying these traits specific to sex is that everyone knows where they belong. And in those cases when men and women come together, they teach one another about masculinity and femininity in a balanced way. I don't think we need to go back to the 1950's to make that sort of thing work for our society.

We don't even need to redefine femininity or masculinity, we simply need to understand what these terms mean for us. There is a lot of evidence that suggests maybe our masculine and feminine features are biological, but for some reason most people don't want to accept that. Why? Because the traits associated with femininity are in turn associated, via the feminist narrative, with submission. It's true that we all can embody masculinity/femininity to whatever degree it pleases us. The traits are the same but the expression is malleable. However, sometimes, maybe even most of the time, a woman is very feminine and a man is very masculine. And if this does occur most of the time, there could be an argument for biology.

Previously, everyone was forced into these roles. We live in an era now where we can express ourselves however we want. I do think that the majority prefer "traditional" sex definitions for themselves, and there is nothing wrong with that.

Ultimately, within the context of men's rights, I think we need to be talking about masculinity more. We have multiple dimensions for femininity now-- in the context of biological female roles, we know how much strength it takes for a woman to give birth. Most mothers who have given birth naturally will experience more physical pain than the men in their life will. This strength is the feminine strength. But as a society we have also discussed feminine kindness, feminine softness, and feminine beauty. My issue is, what do we think masculine strength is? It's a different flavor than is feminine strength. I would argue feminine strength comes in bursts of high magnitude, whereas masculine strength has a life-spanning stamina, and is more stable. What is masculine kindness? To me, masculine kindness is intimately tied to justice and loyalty, whereas feminine kindness is instinctually applied in almost every situation. What is masculine softness? To me, it's a contrast. It is the wonderful juxtaposition of a being with great physical strength handling a small creature with care, or the juxtaposition of a being with very good logical ability appreciating something beautiful on a purely emotional level. Feminine softness is in the body of the female. It's a pervasive notion we have about women, that is literally embodied in her physical form. As well, because she is less physically strong than is a male, her touch is also soft. What is masculine beauty? Feminine beauty is not only in the visually pleasing curvature of her body, but in the general expression of her inner self. I find women to be very detail-oriented (I am myself a woman), and so feminine beauty is largely expressed in the attention to detail she has about what she says, what she wears, and what she appreciates. The feminine beauty is in that particular detailed intelligence as well-- the many details she is constantly juggling and pondering on a daily basis, and the way she can bring in the beauty she sees all around her into her daily living. She can brighten your day just because of this. Masculine beauty, yes tied to the stature of his frame, is also tied to his inner self. I find men are very future-oriented. Their beauty is expressed in their innovative thinking, their preparation and assurance, and the structure of their thoughts. I feel assured when a man is around. He provides a certain structure to my particular kind of creativity (the feminine beauty being also creative in a specific way). He is prepared, he is stable, he stands firm. Even if he is not prepared, he is preparing to be prepared, or he is preparing to deal with the fallout from his lack of preparation. Masculine creativity lies in practicality. Masculine creativity/beauty has given us useful technology, has provided us with something to bring into the future.

Once again, both men and women have these traits in varying degrees, but I find masculinity to be concentrated in men and femininity in women. What's so bad about that? Every trait I listed is desirable, and they don't over power one another. All of those traits are complementary to each other.

But for some reason we now reject both, on some basis that these traits were previously enforced to the degree that it damaged both men and women. My point is, there is no reason to force anyone into these definitions, but there is no reason to discourage it either. The last thing I want to reiterate is that we need to once again come to a rich understanding of masculinity, to match the understanding we have of femininity. "Toxic" masculinity is so defined because for some reason we only understand masculinity as some kind of aggressive, power-hungry bravado. We regress now for similar definitions of femininity, where we see traditional femininity as submissive, quiet, and shy. These definitions are not the case at all. Now that we have seen the many forms of the feminine, let's see the masculine.

Just because nobody replied yet, I wanted to say that I find your post beautiful :) I also know I am one of those women who sometimes reacts negatively towards comments (especially if by men...unfair I know) where women are being praised for their femininity. This is because I myself feel restricted by the bounds of being expected to be feminine. I enjoy looking feminine, but for example I am not great with domestic skills because I care more for work, and have few feelings of nurture towards children (though I enjoy caring for adults), and do not want children. In general I'm not really "against" femininity in women as of course everyone should be the way they want, but I need to be in a state where I am secure that also my traits are appreciated. Like just in the other thread a man was saying something along the lines of 'all inventions in history have been done by men, women are worth less' and this triggers my anger as apparently when women are feminine and domestic they then get ... not the same appreciation.

[–]Aivias 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

That you recognise your desire to have your cake and eat it is a start. One thing that most men will recognise that, if you are with women, you should not make any comment regarding any negative opinions or experiences you have of women and it will always be conflated with an attack on them personally. Ive seen it with my own mother and sister, they refuse to accept a point of view if it shines a liget on something negative about women and even when statistically proven wrong they wont accept it because it too much generalisation.

[–]BaileysBaileys 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Thanks for your reply. I'm not sure that I agree that I 'want to have my cake and eat it'. I don't feel that what I describe is wanting two irreconciliable things. Rather I recognize that what is my preference may not be representative for all women, and that men are 'allowed' (for lack of a better word) to compliment women on things they like, even if it irks me when traditional female roles are accentuated. And indeed, men are allowed to say negative things about women, although that is a new point.
