I am so glad I found this sub. Let me start by saying this, I understand that there are always two sides to every story, and that I am only sharing one. I understand that you need to take it with a grain of salt, but some advice would be nice.
I am a 26 year old Black man living in Louisiana. I am currently working on licensure as a psychotherapist. I work as a counselor at a clinic. I have a clinical supervisor, who's license I work under while he provides me supervision, and an administrative supervisor who is also an Licensed Professional Counselor and who I work with. She is about 35-40 years old, extremely condescending, and likes to micromanage my work. She is white, but so is my clinical supervisor and we have never had any issues. I am aware that white people are discriminated against and called "racist" at times for no reason at all. (I just want you to know I am not making this an issue of race when it need not be, but I did think it was pertinent)
One day, there was something I made a decision on without consulting her. I did not have to as it was a clinical decision that I made in the moment. Apparently, she believes that her license is on the line even though I have repeatedly explained to her that I work under the supervision of my clinical supervisor. So I ask,
"In the future, what would you like me to do differently so that this doesn't happen again?"
No attitude, eye contact, respectful but firm and she goes...
"I don't understand why you have an attitude"....
I politely, but directly, ask
"Could you please tell me exactly what I did that makes you think I had an attitude?"
"Well, I don't know, its the way you said it"
"How exactly did I say it?"
"I don't know, maybe its your personality"
Is this a common occurrence when you have a female supervisor? She is divorced and kind of gives off that feminist vibe.
Another thing I have noticed is that, sometimes we have a manager who visits from another clinic. She is very tall and often wears short dresses. I mean, unprofessionally short dresses. Never is a word said. I wore tennis shoes once and she went ballistic. Does anyone have any suggestions, I know from my studies in communication that this will continue, but does anyone have any idea on how I might deal with it?
