I think the people who complain about being nice not working are complaining that it doesn't work for getting a romantic relationship, not that it doesn't work for getting people to like you in general. It does work for the latter, whereas it's mostly orthogonal to the former.

You're supposed to be nice for yourself, because that's the person you are. If you're expecting reciprocation you're doing it for the wrong reasons. Be nice because it make you feel good. Because you like yourself more when you're nice. If other people are assholes, that's their problem. If they don't reciprocate, that's on them for being shitty. Not your problem.

If you're being nice to get something out of people, then you aren't nice. You're fake nice. Niceness isn't gonna get you women. It's also not gonna prevent you from getting women. What will get you women is good looks, money, and confidence. But if you want to have a healthy relationship with yourself and with others, being nice (kind and empathetic) is key.

If you give with the expectation of receiving, you are not giving, you are consciously manipulating. That is the problem with "nice" people.

You should always give freely with no expectation of a return. Same as with with gambling: only bet as much as you are willing to lose.

However, if, over time, there is no reciprocity, that reveals the other person's character, and gives you the opportunity to exclude them from all or part of your life. If there is reciprocity, you can build a healthy, mutually-beneficial relationship as friends, lovers or partners.
