Evidence suggests that monogamy is not a natural distribution of sex, but rather a social system set up by the patriarchy. Prior to the advent of civilization, and consequently, patriarchal systems, humans had five times as many female as they did male ancestors. This shows that while women almost always reproduced, men seldom did. We can also see this in mammals genetically closely related to us, where “alpha males” who win the sexual competition are the only males in a given social group allowed to reproduce.

It’s fairly easy to connect the dots and infer that monogamy was established to prevent the destructive nature of sexual competition while providing all men with access to a woman. Since this was a male-dominated system, women’s misery within monogamy was largely ignored. Women are shown to be less happy when partnered vs. when single, while men are the opposite. When women were given the option to initiate divorce, they used it fully, and now roughly 2/3rds of divorces in the US are initiated by women.

As the structures of patriarchy are falling, the system of monogamy is collapsing along with it. Women only like a small percentage of men on dating apps, and far more young women are sexually active than men.

In our new society of female sexual selection, the overwhelming majority of men have no chance of ever entering into a relationship. This lack of sexual opportunity is driving up male suicide rates exponentially, as sexual and romantic companionship is one of humans’ strongest motivating desires. We are now seeing the “lonely men” problem upon us, and the evidence suggests that it’s only going to get much worse.

The question is, why make men suffer? Under a female-dominated society, the overwhelming majority of men have no value it all and are doing nothing but wasting resources. I think that educating men about the nature of sexual selection and offering men who find the lack of sexual opportunity too much to bear a chance to die without suffering.
