A common argument I see in this subreddit, is that human sexual selection is biologically and evolutionarily driven. To that, I say most people are missing the nuance of environment, social structure, and hierarchy. While genetics do effect sexual selection, it is not the only variable.We share 99% of our DNA with chimps and 98.7% with bonobos, but both those species have quite different social and sexual structures. Bonobos actually engage in same sex relations commonly, and the female bonobo tends to prefer other females to males. Chimps are polygynangrous,and actually older female chimps are more favored than younger female chimps as sexual partners. The genetics are so similar, but the mating patterns are Bartley different due to their environment and social structure. Humans do engage in polygamy and polygyny, but we are vastly pair bonded and monogamous. Genetics are not the only variable, so don’t put mate choice down to just that aspect.
