Crosspost "My best friend died and i hate his wife." from /r/TrueOffMyChest:
I lurk reddit a lot, i have an account i use for gaming related content, but i rather not post this there. English is not my native language but i just wanted to share this story.
So, i have this friend since middle school, he was the kindest, most selfless dude i knew. He was the type of person that was always there for you, that texted everyone to know if they got home safely, always gave you a hand when you need it, or just listens to you when you are down. When people were nasty to him, he was calm and treated them respectfully.
While we grew up he was friendly with everyone, he was overweight but extremely strong, he had the respect of the boys but not much contact with girls, on highschool he had a crush for the "pretty girl" in class, but even i only found out after months, he was the type of person to hide his feelings. This girl would keep texting him, but make fun of him on his back for being overweight and thinking he has a chance, i remember being furious and telling him that, but he wasnt even angry at her, he said "Its normal people badmouth each other to pass time, i know she isn't interested in me, but its fine, as long as she is happy", something like that.
He wouldn't get angry with her even if she despised him, its like he assumed every girl found him nasty.
Then, we went to college in different cities, we didnt spend so much time together, but kept talking a lot. He fell for another girl, he thought he didnt have a chance for being overweight, so he went crazy in the gym, losing like 50kilos in less than a year, i didnt recognize him when i saw him, every girl started noticing him.
That girl he liked meanwhile had went through a series of relationships and in the end of the first year of college, she left the course and my friend never even told her he liked her. Dont know if it was due to that, or being far away from his family and friends, he fell into a depression and we stopped talking
Years went by, he got his degree, he kept working out, dude looked great, but he was always single, we tried to hook him up with someone, but he just refused, while he was always sociable with the guys, he barely interacted with women.
When we were 26, that girl from highschool that he had a crush on, reached out to him, at the time i told him she wasnt a good person, but he never had been in a relationship, even though i didnt like her, or how she was approaching him now, at least i thought it would be some fun for him.
They ended up getting married in less than a year, she didnt work, stayed home all day doing nothing, he had to pay for a maid to go clean. He stopped going out with us, no gaming and so on, from what he told me she didn't treat him well or appreciated him. Some years after that they had a little girl now, and his wife started torturing him to bring home more money (even though he already had a good salary, they had a nice house, car, went on yearly holidays and so on), i told him that if she wanted more money, she should go work, instead of making him leave a job he enjoys, just for her to buy more expensive bags. He was feeling miserable and his little girl was what kept him going. In the end he decided to take an "high risk" job over 500km away that paid more, even though he could only see his baby once a week, the wife pushed him to accept it.
Last month he died in a work related accident, he was texting me just a few days before how awful he felt, and how he just wanted to be at his own home. Still breaks my heart when i think about it.
When i went to the funeral i heard some stories from friends how the wife made life insurance before he started to work there, and how she probably was cheating on him (she was known for sleeping around since she was 13). Just thinking about the smile she made while talking with someone, in her husband funeral, makes me furious.
I wish i had done more for him, tried harder to keep him home, or try to avoid him getting together with this woman. If someone deserved to be happy it was him Ever since he was a kid all he did was give care and love to other people, and he barely got anything back. He had a loving mother and siblings that were devastated, but he never shared his feelings with them.
Sorry for the text wall, if you are kind, give your kindness to people that deserve it, dont let others take advantage of you. If i broke any rules, remove the post, i just wanted to write it out.
