To what extent does the entire “debate” over romantic relationships between men and women boil down to the simple fact that being single is better for women and being in a relationship is better for men?

My thought is you young people need to go out and experience life instead of watching from the sidelines and attempting to systemize everything.

At the end of the day, let’s say every theory that’s ever been proposed on this sub is true. So what? You still have to go out there and find someone for yourself. And making it 10 times harder than it has to be by overthinking everything isn’t helping in the least.

Since when does living longer equate with happiness? The premise that married men are happier is too simplistic for several reasons

1) 50% of marriages end in divorce, 80% of which are initiated by women and all statistical data proves that divorced men are significantly less happy and worse off, than never married men

2) Married men live longer because they're more likely to take of their health, go to medical appointments etc as a result of being pushed to do so, by their wives. This isn't a measure of happiness, just of longevity. Moreover divorced men often have shorter lives than single men

3) The author mentions that in addition to living longer, married men earn more money. However, he fails to explain that married men usually work 40 hours more each week on average to provide for their families and have less disposable income to spend on themselves. Thus married men have less time for themselves and their hobbies and they take on more stress to provide for their families

4) The author says married men take fewer risks but that's because they need to be there for their family and provide for its stability, not because theyre happier.

5) Even if the author did measure actual marital happiness they'd have to discount couples with kids because some of that happiness may derive from your kids more than from your partner.

Moreover the author states that unmarried people (he doesn't specify women) are happier than married people

Ultimately the authors premise is as flawed as your own. The fact that men live longer, take less risk and make more money isn't evidence of men being happier. The authors idea of happiness is very simplistic and they're basing it in longetivity and income earnings but the fact that married women live for shorter lenghts of time and earn less doesn't necessarily make them less happy than single women and the fact that men live longer and earn more (by doing extra work) doesn't make them happier.

Article sounds extremely cherry picked in terms of data and un-nuanced in terms of conclusions. Women and men both benefit from healthy relationships. Women in particular crave, and love, commitment. Men crave connection, whether permanent and monogamous or intermittent and non-monogamous.

The big disconnect seems to be that women are less willing to compromise and more willing to be single. Doesn't mean they're better off that way, just means they can accept the resultant lifestyle more easily. Men seem to fare worse, in aggregate, when they're starved for affection. That's what I've gathered from more comprehensive and reasonable articles anyway.

“Social science studies” particularly on happiness, are damn near universally bullshit. I really hope people are NOT living their lives based on these studies. However I see a lot of women quote them.

The article doesn’t even say women live longer married. Men it says live longer because married men take less risks which makes sense (the stereotype of the wife telling her husband “NO” when he wants a motorcycle at play here).

And I really feel there is some weird social engineering going on with these articles. Women are dis positioned to want to get married and keep getting media that marriage sucks. Men are dispositioned to not want to get married and keep getting media that marriage is great for them.

For single women, most of the time its by choice. They just play the hookup game whenever they feel like it. For a lot of single men its not by choice, its because they are lower value than their peers. Being isolated leads to more risky and self destructive behaviors. The suicide rate is already much higher for males and it skews towards unmarried men, to give one example.
