Yeah, definitely not half and half - I was using that more to highlight my point than be accurate.

I think you're probably right about how the casual reader assumes, but then there's also people who don't care much. You have to ask yourself, "If they're assuming it's real but not bothering to confirm that, do they really care at all?" They would surely be ignorant to the topic, hypothetically assuming that they never visited the comments at all, or very little.

I would reason that it's likely there are a notable amount of people who just don't care. This doesn't invalidate the people who do care, I think the problem stems from there being no rule or acknowledgement, not even a sticky post, to say the post must be based in reality. My question is that if the sub users truly care about the issue, why haven't they pressured the mods into cracking down or clarifying?

if i am paying for delivery, which i am through uber eats and most pizza delivery places (no free delivery places that i know of in my city), that should be covering gas and wear. also, its not my job to voluntarily pay more for a service that i am already paying for. mandatory tipping never made sense to me. sure, i oblige cuz thats the society we live in, but i as a customer shouldnt have an obligation to pay more for something that should already be included in the price of the product/service.

its not my problem where the delivery charge is going.... the 3-4$ extra that i am paying is for the service to have the food delivered should be the only time i pay for the service. I am not the employer, its not my job to directly pay the wage for a service that i am already paying for.

If he is not tipped at all then he is essentially going to make less than minimum wage.

Sorry to tell you but there's a lot of people making less than the pizza guy, and unfortunelly that's how capitalism works, if he doesn't want to have the risk of not getting tipped, get another job.

Basically, you are screwing the delivery guys by not tipping them.

As another commenter has felt so inclined to remind me, US laws state that anyone making less than minimum wage due to lack of tips must make up the difference, thus no there are not people making less than him. It is called a minimum wage for a reason. And telling someone to just "get another job" foolishly assumes they are capable of getting something better paying. Even you can admit someone that is working as a delivery driver likely does not have many credentials for better paying jobs.

Yes you do have the freedom to tip or not, nobody is forcing you. The reason we do is we know they are getting paid garbage and are likely depending on the tips as minimum wage is not enough to live on (also its the cultural norm as stated above).
By not tipping you are causing his travel to your house to be most likely at a loss as he is not likely being reimbursed for fuel costs.

Well then you should just go pick it up.

No the pizza place employed him specifically for that reason, that's his job, deliver pizza from place A to place B, that's why he has a salary and that's what he should be doing.

Just as with a server at a restaurant, pizza delivery drivers get paid less when on the road and depend on tips to make a living.

This is just wrong, it's the equivalent of assuming you'll get a bigger salary this month and use your credit card and then complaing when you get the normal salary and get fucked over by the bill. You shouldn't be assuming that you'll get a bonus, because that's all tips are, bonus, we're NOT obligated to tip nobody. If you don't like the risk of not getting tipped simply switch jobs.

We can argue all day long whether that is right or wrong, but that’s the reality of it.

Actually is really simple. Tip is a bonus, no one is obligated to pay it. If the delivery guy is assuming he's getting tipped everytime and depends on it, switch jobs, because that's just dumb.

I pay exactly what is owed all the time tho. How is that some terrible thing for the delivery driver

Edit: you guys have to realize tipping is harmful for both the employee and the customer. It only helps the employer. Tipping is unfair for many who don’t get as much for reasons out of their control. Tipping keeps wages terrible. It’s one of the craziest customs I’ve ever seen. It’s annoying, confusing And just bad overall. And that’s not an opinion, it’s just true.

Jobs like waitresss and delivery driver deserve to be paid better. Period. They shouldn’t have to rely on tips.

We figured this shit out years ago: pay an official price through an official paper for services/goods using currency. Yet for some reason this archaic tradition of tipping outside of the formal agreement continues to exist much to the detriment of the innocent parties involved. I would much rather my price of delivery go up $3 than pay $2 in tipping and continue to contribute to a harmful ecosystem.

We can all pretend to be mr.literal and be dicks about it, someone asks you to pick something up for them so you pick it up and put it back down HAHA YOU DIDN'T SAY BRING IT TO YOU etc..

As I say depends how well you know the person, but either:

- (A) they didn't know she wanted it paying for and they are a total moron; why wouldn't she order it herself, why would she be so grateful/begging if it was just to place an order only, complete social moron if he thought otherwise. Or

- (B) he knew what she meant but wanted to fuck with her or prove a point, putting her on the spot to pay for something she can't afford and asked nicely from him (as well as being a dick to the delivery guy), when she was clearly appreciative and surprised he agreed etc.

Honestly, of the two of them, I'd rather be the person nicely asking for a favour than the other guy who's clearly a dick.

Everyone has asked for favours for people and we try to avoid mentioning "money" / "pay" etc. because that seems ruder, we almost always leave it implied when asking for things like that. "Can you get this?" etc
