When you live with roommates, you don't clean anyone's mess but your own. When you get a job, you do your workload, not anyone else's (maybe you cover multiple positions if they're having trouble filling them, but you certainly don't do the work of a position that someone's already filled, while they kick back and do nothing). Everything about being an adult ties into self reliance, and taking care of yourself and your messes and personal needs.

Things like taking the trash out, yeah, have them do that, because sorting everyone's trash into separate bins is just a pain in the ass. It should cycle between each person though, with women always being the ones to take care of the bathroom trash when it's their time of the month. But dishes? When you get done cooking, portion the food out, put whatever's left in a tupperware bowl and leave it on the counter in case anyone wants seconds, and wash the pots and pans before you sit down. Everyone can rinse and wash their plate, cup, and silverware when they get done eating. And whoever takes the last of the leftovers, if there are any, can be the one to wash the plastic bowl.

Same with washing the bathroom. You shit or piss? Wash the toilet after you're done. Clean the tub/shower after you get out and finish getting dressed. This whole "designated cleaning day" shit just leads to unnecessary mess build up. Clean as you go is a concept drilled into you as a chef, and I've carried that into other aspects of my life as well, and it honestly makes things so much easier.

I honestly can't believe the entitlement of some people replying to this comment.

Regardless of you paying rent, or living free of charge, the house shores need to get done, someone has to do them. If everyone uses the same toilet, eats the same meal, and walks on the same floor they get split because the dishes will also need to get done. Wtf is this bs of I don't do this or that? If we all live in under the same roof we a should contribute, because guess what? If I clean the toilet you piss in, you better do something else to help around the house.

Don't know what planet you guys live on, but on earth, this is called being responsible and not acting like an entitled dickwad. (unless you pay rent and bills and have 100% you own space in the property, but in that case you do you and I do me)

I don't think your point was "invalidated" or anything. Here's the thing, though. Superficially, a kid washing an adult's dishes seems irresponsible on the part of the adult.

In reality, that adult caregiver is spending almost every waking moment either caring for the child, working to raise money to care for the child, or dealing with some sort of problem related to caring for the child.

The part that you might not "get" quite yet is that there almost isn't a "you" any more, especially in the early years, and especially for the mom (or whoever the primary caregiver might be). It's all-consuming.

So if you ever see your future kid even taking a tiny bit off the top of the mountain of labor that represents full time childcare, and learning skills to be a responsible adult in the process, you will rejoice.
