Grammy Awards. Some terrible singer got a standing ovation because Hollywood. This fangirl proceeds to defend the chick after someone she doesn't follow makes an innocuous tweet about it and subsequently gets run over by a tank.

edit: She responded by subtweeting "Some military dude is trying to tell me his 'military awards' are better than a grammy" and eventually she made her account private and deleted all the tweets after getting the wrath of the internet. . . but not before someone screenshot the killshot. Also this guy had no mention of his military service on his profile which made it even sweeter.

It's not better or worse. They're for completely different things.

[–]such-a-mensch 47 points48 points49 points 9 years ago (15 children) | Copy Link

One's for singing, the other for bravery and valour.

They're different but in no way equal or remotely comparable.

[–]chenry123 36 points37 points38 points 9 years ago (14 children) | Copy Link

Yeah and one of those medals is a purple heart, so add being injured in the line-of-duty to that.

[–]TheBigBarnOwl 12 points13 points14 points 9 years ago (13 children) | Copy Link

But but.. no better or worse than a Grammy right?

[+]Eab543 -8 points-7 points-6 points 9 years ago (12 children) | Copy Link

Yet I'd have lunch with a Grammy winner before I'd have lunch with some soldier.

[–]TheBigBarnOwl 14 points15 points16 points 9 years ago (11 children) | Copy Link

Well you showed your bias right here. Hilarious you think they are comparable. In your privileged 20s it seems, or just out of them.

[–]Eab543 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link

I respect soldiers and acknowledge that they are brave people. I'm not going to pretend being a soldier automatically makes you the greatest thing ever. I think you people are so overly patriotic that you compare medals awarded for bravery to an award for creating music people like. Also, at this point I don't want them protecting me. I want my tax dollars going towards a million other fucking things we need more than war. I don't want them going out and getting killed for fucking NOTHING. Yes thank you soldiers for everything you've done. Being alive raising your kids would have done so much more for this country.

[–]TheBigBarnOwl 15 points16 points17 points 9 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link

Always got to be passive aggressive.

[–]Eab5432 points 9 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Please argue what I said. Can you? Also you saying always got to be passive aggressive.......is passive aggressive.

[–][deleted]3 points 9 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

You're arguing that one thing cant be better than another because they're different. Very tubular thought processes. Very simplistic view.

Take my advice in PM's.

[–]Eab5431 point 9 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

And take the cock out of your mouth. Also soldiers die for stuff like the Grammys to exist so I'd say the Grammys are better. Keep screaming I have autism. Makes you look like a jackass. Not a tubular thinking jackass so that's nice. So keep your advice. It's worth about the same as a used condom.

[–]stryfe6043 points 9 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Have you ever voiced this opinion to a soldier? Because a lot of them come back and talk to people like you and realize they have thrown their life away trying to protect an entitled ungrateful society. So in a way you will get what want. Also if there weren't any soldiers protecting America right now, how bad do you think it would get? America has burned so many bridges abroad, you need war to keep everything at bay. End war and demonstration of strength and you will open the flood gates. Then where are you going to go have your poetry jams, Starbucks, and organic kale juice?

Edit: Words

[–]Eab5433 points 9 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

If you think I'm an SJW you are wrong. I would easily express these beliefs to a soldier. Freedom of speech. Something they fight for right? Again asshole I'll say it. I respect soldiers. I recognize they sacrifice. Not for me. This war does not keep me safe. No army is going to stop a guy bringing in an AK into the mall I happen to be shopping in. I don't understand what we are doing over there. We've waisted trillions of dollars. We've waisted lives of soldiers. We've waisted lives of children and innocent people. Of course I'm fucking ungrateful. I'm no hippie. We need an army. We don't need this shit. Fuck you and the high horse you ride.

[–]stryfe6045 points 9 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Just because you don't understand or see it doesn't mean it doesn't exist. Grow up and stop being a child. We have enough useless people in the world.

[–]Eab5432 points 9 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points12 points 9 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

[–]Eab543 -3 points-2 points-1 points 9 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

Better how?

[–]chenry123 11 points12 points13 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

One recognized distinguished service to the United States Military, and the other is the result of an musical circlejerk. A lot of prominent Grammy-recipients talk about how much of a joke the Grammys are. Eddie Vedder supposedly keeps his in a box somewhere in his basement.

From what I can tell about his medals and ribbons, he was a staff sergeant in the army, stationed in the middle-east and Korea, and was injured in the line of duty. Not trying to be a part of any pro-military patriotic nonsense, but this guy deserves credit for burning the shit outta that girl on the internet.

[–]Eab543 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

For sure. He deserves kudos.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points8 points 9 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

You're not even taking the piss are you?

[–]Eab543 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Does that mean fucking with you? All I'm saying is that it's apples and oranges. An award for music shouldn't be considered worse than someone's war medals. Just seems retarded.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points8 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Does that mean fucking with you?

Yeah.

My opinion is that a war hero is exactly that. A hero that has sacrificed their lives for ours. And believe me, a soldier doesn't have to die to sacrifice his life. They give up more than we can imagine.

A singer is the equivalent of a dancing monkey.

It's like lovely beautiful fresh, juicy, plump, ripe oranges vs shitty decayed, brown, manky apples

[–]Eab543 5 points6 points7 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

That's my point. Why are you placing them together is what I'm wondering. You know what's better than potatoes? Hammers. It's just stupid to me.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I don't say this as an insult. Actually, I'm gonna PM you so as not to make a deal out of this in public, seeing as what I'm about to say is a common insult on Reddit and I mean it in all sincerity.

[–]kaizack 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Singing really well

Getting shot at and defending your country, fellow servicemen, showing extreme bravery , going through literal hell

Hmm

[–]Eab543 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

My niece got awarded perfect attendance for first grade. That's nothing compared to brave soldiers and what they deal with. It's ok. I can compare them because they both received awards. Ones sitting at a desk everyday. The other is getting shot and going through hell and whatever the fuck else you said. See how retarded that makes you all sound. You guys are fantastic at seeming like respectful gentlemen but actually you're just using your patriotism to lord over people. You guys are comparing the Grammys to war medals. They're both awards but for different things. Someone getting shot doesn't make creating music dumb.

[–]MidWestMind 59 points60 points61 points 9 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

I got called out by some redneck girl, "Unless you served, your opinion doesn't matter about reason we are in Afghanistan". Okay bitch. I don't flaunt my service, no rank profile pic or anything on fb. I was in 1999-2003, so I don't have selfies and shit.

I posted my basic training photo that is on my book shelf. Literally the only military thing I have displayed in my house. She deflected, "I served too and don't plaster my service all over fb". Fuck you bitch.

[–]GourmetCoffee 15 points16 points17 points 9 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Fucking hate these people, they give those in the armed forces a bad name.

Act like twats and think because they served they are immune to criticism and can never be judged by the same standards.

[–]Dodger_that 18 points19 points20 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Really, it's just a giant circle jerk. And the fact that they bragged about having a black person nominated in every category this year just shows how disingenuous the voting process is.

[–]-Antiheld- 4 points5 points6 points 9 years ago (58 children) | Copy Link

Can somebody explain?

[–]MustakaThinks breakfast food is gay sex 56 points57 points58 points 9 years ago (57 children) | Copy Link

Basically there has been a lot of posts from feminists lately about not showing respect to armed forces personnel just because they served. Which is fair to some extent. I fucking hate the 'thank you for your service' BS some people spew. It is fucking annoying as hell.

In this case it is the other end of the spectrum. The Purple Heart is awarded for wounds recieved by the enemy in combat. So by showing his medals he proved her to be a vapid dumb cunt. Some things are worthy of respect, and some things are not important.

[–]timechuck 12 points13 points14 points 9 years ago (38 children) | Copy Link

I feel having the burden or our nation's safety is important. They may not have joined to carry it, but they joined. It's more than most of us do, and it's worth a bit of gratitude at the least to me.

[–]MustakaThinks breakfast food is gay sex -7 points-6 points-5 points 9 years ago (37 children) | Copy Link

And that is the point. Your ass has not joined up and never will. Your thank you is vapid and useless. Do not give it.

[–]timechuck 22 points23 points24 points 9 years ago (35 children) | Copy Link

I tried joining the Marine Corps dozens of time, the Navy also, and even the army. They'd not take me because I had childhood asthma. The last time I tried to join the Marines Corps the recruiter pulled me aside and told me it was actually a crime to knowingly waste his time and if he saw me in the office again, he would push to have charges leveled against me. Being a 19 year old, that scared the hell out of me. Truthfully, not being able to join and do my part has had a massive effect on my life and my opinion of my self worth. That's all I had ever wanted to do is follow in my father's footsteps and serve my country and I will be damned if I'll be looked down on because I never served when serving is the only thing I had ever wanted to do by some asshole on the internet who is offended by my GENUINE GRATITUDE towards those that could do what I was not allowed to.

My thanks to the veterans are not some feel good comment that doesn't mean anything. I grew up around disabled vets from Vietnam and have spoken to many people who have given more of themselves than you or I can fully comprehend. When I thank them for what they've been prepared to do for me and mine it is an expression of a gratitude that I can never fully repay. And for you to tell me that my thanks are vapid and useless is beyond insulting.

I recall some years ago I was grocery shopping with my son's and noticed a couple in their 60's. I saw the man had a POW bracelet (one of the original copper ones, mind you) on and I asked him in passing if he served. He said he had two tours in Vietnam. I shook his hand and looked him in the eye and thanked him for what he had given for me and my son's. He smiled and we parted ways. As he was walking away I heard him say quietly to his wife in a cracking voice "he is the first person to ever thank me for what I did." You tell.me my gratitude is useless, at the VERY least, that man has at least some idea that the sacrifices of him and his brothers was not wasted.

[–]MustakaThinks breakfast food is gay sex -13 points-12 points-11 points 9 years ago (34 children) | Copy Link

You have asthma. You shoke a veterans hand. Pathetic.

Have you done anything else for veterans? Volunteered anywhere? Or is a handshake the extent of you.

expression of a gratitude that I can never fully repay

I would bet you have done zero to repay anyone. None. You have never volunteered to help Vets. You have never donated money.

You self loathing cunts gets by on an excuse and a platitude of 'thank you for your service'.

[–]timechuck 18 points19 points20 points 9 years ago (20 children) | Copy Link

I cannot count how many vets I have bought dinner for, or helped carry their groceries to the car, done yard work, fixed their heaters or air conditioners. I have also volunteered at a lot of events held for veterans. I've served food at Memorial Day celebrations and have been part at countless vet rallys.

I want to thank you for pointing out how childhood asthma has kept me from doing my part. There is a shame I have felt every day for not serving that and your vehement reminder only helps to accent that.

I saw in your post history you were an Army pilot. The fact that you are a bitter cunt does nothing to diminish the respect and gratitude that I have for you and your brothers in arms for what you have given for US, when so many wouldn't, or in my case, couldn't.

[–]bud05cab 5 points6 points7 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I'm gonna guess this dude is joking...poorly, some vets have a terrible idea of humor.

[–]timechuck 5 points6 points7 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]MustakaThinks breakfast food is gay sex -9 points-8 points-7 points 9 years ago* (17 children) | Copy Link

What medicine do you take for your asthma?

[–]timechuck 8 points9 points10 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

When I was a boy I was on an albuterol inhaler and pills called Slo-bid. I had stopped taking the pills when I was around 12 or 13 and didn't need the inhaler (still needed it occasionally but not often) by 18. As of today I've not needed to use an inhaler for years.

WELL THEN I really fucking respect that approach, and I'm sorry for being a dick.

[–]Mustaka0 points 9 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

So what is your problem then with what I said? Lets get into this.

[–]Jester_Umbra1 point 9 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Being prior service, I simply find it disgusting that people can't get over the disconnect of being against the wars and anti-military which somehow automatically ties in to not being thankful of the soldiers and what they do.
You can be anti-military, and anti-war, hell- I'm both myself. That being said I have nothing but respect for my brothers and sisters who are part of the few that put their lives on the line for my country. I don't give a fuck that they don't have to, I don't give a fuck that it's their choice. It's their choice to do it so keyboard warriors like in this thread don't have to.
People seem to forget that it's a common occurrence in other countries to make military service MANDATORY.
I guess I'm ranting at this point, I'm at work and I'm losing track of my point.

[–]Mustaka2 points 9 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

I am 4 tours in. 2 Northern Ireland, 1 NATO, 1 Iraq. First 3 never once heard the 'thank you for your service' dribble. It was not until maybe 3 years after I was out that it became fashionable to say 'thank you for your service'. It is up there with 'did you kill anyone'. Conversation killer. Combine the two and you get anger.

Being medically excluded for child hood asthma is rare. It is such a well understood condition now it is not a big problem. I have had asthma all my life. The only extra condition put on me was an extra test on my mandatory annual physical. I had to do a 1.5 mile run. I did a peak flow test (how much air you can push out) before the run and after.

The thing that pissed me off is the guy that claimed he could not serve because of asthma he had as a kid, a handshake and some meals and he is all good. Bullshit.

[–]Jester_Umbra0 points 9 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

I'll actually reverse my standpoint and agree with you on that one. I enlisted with asthma, they gave me a waiver for it literally my second visit to MEPS.
I also had to do the test where you breathe in a tube and try to hold a ball level.
If he's saying asthma kept him out, that's his failing.

Army. 25U. I never saw combat, and I never went overseas, and I'm the first to say I never did anything heroic.
My service did give me an appreciation for the men and women who did deploy.
I'd reenlist, but now I smoke weed all day.

Typical angry vet. Mad if people show respect and say "thank you for your service" and mad if people don't say anything and treat them like any other citizen. Let me break it down for you Mustaka, you didn't do anything heroic, you are not a hero, you are not special, and you don't deserve ANYTHING. You have a toxic way you present yourself and your logic is severely flawed. This guy above me is trying to give his point of view and add to the conversation and you find a way to make him feel like shit because what? you feel like the way he appreciates people around him isn't up to your standards? go fuck yourself you entitled asshole. I always used to say "I don't support the war but I support the troops" but now i'm starting to see they are fucking brain dead morons who use any excuse to fight. Whether physically or verbally. Fighting for my freedom? yea right. Fuck your shit attitude and you definitely don't get my respect.

Who the fuck wants your respect? Who the fuck needs your respect for what you have done? Pretty simple two questions.

Sometimes the truth hurts.

[–]WTS_USED_ANAL_BEADS 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You do, you moron. You don't want only mine but you want everybody's. You want people bending over backwards to serve you food and kiss your ass. Something as simple as someone saying "thank you for your service" isn't enough, right? You want people to see how much of a hero you are. What you sacrificed! If someone went to college or took over a family business instead of signing up for war, that's a coward move, right? fucking brain dead idiot. Crying over citizens not showing enough respect then asks who wants respect. Should've expected a stupid answer from a stupid person.

Sometimes the truth hurts.

You are good. No need to wish. One day when you are not so fat you will be less ugly. Other fatties will tell you that eating more calories than you burn means you will lose weight. I suggest you trust them.

The Purple Heart is awarded for wounds recieved by the enemy in combat.

Not exactly,

So he was shot? Why does one get a medal for this?

[–]ManicMuffin 9 points10 points11 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Because bleeding for your country is more important than killing for it. It's a bigger honor to almost lose everything, than to take from someone else.

[+]-Antiheld- -9 points-8 points-7 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I don't feel like any of those is an honour. Then again I don't really see the point of honour as a whole so how could I.

What?

[–]youramazing[S] 5 points6 points7 points 9 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Yes, this marine was shot through a window in Iraq. He gets a Purple Heart medal because its a tradition in the military to honor our servicemen and woman who were wounded during combat.

He has a very good podcast called Zero Blog Thirty where he talks about it in one of the earlier episodes.

[–]-Antiheld- -2 points-1 points0 points 9 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Ok so he was shot. He did what he was supposed to in his job. If you choose such a job you know the risks. I don't see it as a special achievement.

Apart from that he probably feels better in his world of little awards and stuff. It feels to me like a childrens club of sorts...

Ok so he was shot. He did what he was supposed to in his job.

My man just shut up. You're making yourself sound more and more retarded the longer you go. It's not the job of anyone to 'get shot' in the military. It's actually the direct opposite. The goal is to stay alive.

It feels to me like a childrens club of sorts...

OK you're clearly trolling now lol good job you got me.

[–]-Antiheld- 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Nah I am just not a fan of the military.

[–]Jester_UmbraWhere I go the PONGO is 3 points4 points5 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

You don't have to support the military to support the people in it. I'm anti-war, and anti-military, but I was also Army and I have nothing but fucking respect for anyone in any branch.
You may not support them or the wars we're fighting, but go look up statistics on how many countries want to fuck our shit up.

[–]-Antiheld- 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That's totally right. The people themselves deserve respect. However I don't really understand the concept of honour, so some stuff I can't get.

[–]Smugjester 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Because it represents what he was willing to sacrifice for his country/fellow soldiers

Thank you for your service not being in a position financially to afford college and residing in an area with high unemployment.

Thank you for your service not being in a position financially to afford college and residing in an area with high unemployment.

This Marine earned his degree before joining the military and knowing him from his podcast could care less about your 'thank you' and would want you to overcome whatever it is that is clearly troubling you. It's okay to ask for help /u/hundreddollar. All around he's a good guy.

edit: oh you're from the UK so you were referring to the BAF, my bad, you should know he's in the USMC. I still doubt thats true of your military.

[–]hundreddollar -3 points-2 points-1 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I wasn't referring to this particular serviceman, nor do i have a "problem" with the military. I was making a generalised statement that a lot of military personnel join because there aren't many options open to them due to financial restraints or residing in areas with high unemployment. You have second guessed me incorrectly.

[–]melodamyte 10 points11 points12 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

And you have second guessed the serviceman in the post. Going by the awarded medals, this person served way above and beyond someone who just enrolled to get an education or out of a lack of more comfortable employment options. It's a completely inaccurate and insulting stereotype.

Edit: if you weren't referring to this particular serviceman, your comment was confusing because it's a base level comment that is usually interpreted to be a direct response to OP

[–]hundreddollar -1 points0 points1 point 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I understand my comment was confusing, i actually thought i'd replied to a comment by user mustaka. It wasn't meant to cause offence.
