That teacher's face. Hamstrung by a system that empowers kids to act like animals.

wat. Their homes do that.

[–]metalmartyr 28 points29 points30 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I think that /u/ipoopgreatness meant that kids know that they can act like wild animals in school because if a teacher dares to put their hands on them or even reprimand them it can mean their job (at the least). Even worse, this is a white teacher. At the risk of sounding like a terrible, terrible racist - white people with any kind of authority have to be very cautious when dealing with black people right now.

[–]ipoopgreatness7 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Pretty much this. The litigious nature of our society disempowers school systems when it comes to keeping the peace & ridding itself of children who demonstrate an aversion to learning. Bullies are empowered when they know they can get away with their idiocy. Thus the look on the teacher's face.

[–]jackblackninja 11 points12 points13 points 11 years ago* (2 children) | Copy Link

Hey I read your links. I just want to ask, why did you write your comments like that? Were you trying to stir people up instead of educating them? I mean you have a valid point if we are talking from a ethnicity neutral perspective but your wording suggests otherwise. From your sources, MAO-A is the only thing that supports a possible difference in aggression originating from which race they were born to. And I don't think 25% is huge, just relevant enough to support a point.

I know that genetics plays a role in behavior, and people with certain mutations will behave differently, but for the majority of people (those of us without irregular mutations) I think the difference is negligible when compared to environmental effects. I'll just use the sources you provided as context.

1. The whole thing is directly relevant, but here are two important snippets.

59% of Black men, 54% of Chinese men, 56% of Maori men, and 34% of Caucasian men carry the 3R allele.

A connection between a version of the monoamine oxidase A gene (3R) and several types of antisocial behavior has been found. MAO-A had no statistically significant main effect on antisocial behavior. Maltreated children with genes causing high levels of MAO-A were less likely to develop antisocial behavior.[28] Low MAO-A activity in combination with abuse experienced during childhood results in an increased risk of aggressive behaviour as an adult.[29] High testosterone, maternal tobacco smoking during pregnancy, poor material living standards, dropping out of school, and low IQ can also trigger violent behavior in men with the low-activity alleles (which are overwhelmingly the 3R allele).

That article literally states that the gene variant has no significant effect unless coupled with a bad environment. Black people are just 25% more likely to have the gene than white people.

2. The farthest this got to supporting a race issue was Spearman's hypothesis, speculating that the parts of IQ tests with the highest g-load would have the greatest difference between race. There was so much stuff in that article arguing that race was not the core issue of intelligence that you should just read it for yourself.

3. Speaking of Spearman haha... hey maybe you guys would have gotten along (not being facetious or insulting). I see why you brought the g factor into this, and it is commonly cited in these types of debates. I feel like it be can be used misguidedly though, where it's original point was to convey that generally, people show a correlation between how good they are at one the thing to how good they are at another. My rebuttal would simply be that generally, black people are in worse socio-economic environments, leading to a generally worse IQ. There is not a single thing in that article stating that it is a repercussion of genetics other than the fact that the g-factor is inherited. What I mean is that you cannot interpret the test as black people being naturally less intelligent unless you compare a large sample of blacks and whites that all came from the same socio-economic environments.

4. I am kind of confused why you cited this one. In regards to race, this article only mentions it in the last section. There it says the Flynn Effect is used in arguments regarding Spearman's hypothesis and that it could be related to a diminishing racial IQ gap.

Like I said, you have valid points, but not rooted in race, just genetics. So why write it like you want to piss people off?

[–]Alex470 -1 points0 points1 point 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Phenomenal post! I imagine it's because he's less concerned about educating others and more because he's an angry racist looking for ways to justify his beliefs.

Nobody's suggesting she should have smashed heads. I don't think she could even if she was allowed to. There's got to be some disciplinary action available to her. This was a shameful dereliction of duty - she didn't even try.

[–]lostpasswordnoemail -1 points0 points1 point 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

there is no action other than calling for help on the intercom which is what she did before she sat back down. they send cops down to correct the issue. if she gets involved in any other way she is liable.

[–]purrrfect -4 points-3 points-2 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Fair point, but it was frustrating to watch an authority figure just sit there like another student, and not even try to reason with them.

[–]MrOrionpax 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

And you don't think that she and all the other authority figures aren't just as frustrated. So she should try to argue with the student that's already about to start swinging, That you can see already doesn't care what the teacher thinks or does? She's probably staying at that job because she feels that if she doesn't do it no one else in the right mind will and maybe that she does want her students to get somewhere in life.

Can you imagine that teachers life?

Sitting in a room and getting paid probably 50-60k + benefits and a pension do to nothing? I'll take her lazy ass useless job and you can feel sorry for me for the same money and responsibilities.

Edit: If it sucks so bad for her, why doesn't she take her skills and education elsewhere? Because they aren't valuable and she has a sweet deal. Anyone else who hates their job and has an education and talents would try to find different work, but she is aware that the free market pays far less than a teacher's union supported job.

[–]Jables162 18 points19 points20 points 11 years ago (15 children) | Copy Link

Implying teachers get over 30k until they're well into their 60's.

And since when is education useless? Are you stupid?

[–]breauxstradamus0 points 11 years ago [recovered] (2 children) | Copy Link

Dude teachers definitely make over 30K. This isn't the 90's. I have a lot of friends that are young teachers, in a southern state, so it's not like cost of living is high. They make 40's and 50's. Not great, but definitely pretty sweet considering that after their first couple of years creating lesson plans and shit, they pretty much work like half the amount of hours and everyone else.

Median Public School teacher pay - $55,360. A married couple of teachers makes more than double the median household income in the United States. Please don't spout ignorant bullshit, no matter how often you hear it.

Keep in mind they do not work a full year. I have worked in restaurants over the summer with tons of teachers who pocket another $X dollars while crying about being underpaid.

Also try to bear in mind that education majors are among the least academically successful college majors. Their degree has no real-world value outside of their union's coercive power. They cry about being underpaid, but they are simply not competitive with their skills.

Education is not useless, but teachers are useless at providing it. Ironically, all the good teachers (the ones you want to pretend care about performing their job well) are teaching at private schools for pay cuts. These glorified babysitters deserve a flat $15 per hour with bonuses for the academic successes of their students. Even better, give the ones who 'teach' in more dangerous schools a higher salary and higher incentives. That way there are no crocodile tears from the lazy sacks of shit that I had as an upper-middle class white kid. I dropped out in 10th grade, educated myself, and lied my way into college. No teacher did any of that shit for me.

[–]ambermonkey 4 points5 points6 points 11 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link

Is that average income nation-wide, across all schools? I think we need to look at the specific districts that have this type of behavior/teaching occur. They are usually the lower level education systems with the funding to match. Just syphoning money differently isn't that easy as you seem to think it is.

That way there are no crocodile tears from the lazy sacks of shit that I had as an upper-middle class white kid. I dropped out in 10th grade, educated myself, and lied my way into college. No teacher did any of that shit for me.

You seem to have a grudge on the education system as a whole.

[+]CivilityBeDamned -11 points-10 points-9 points 11 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

You seem to have a grudge on the education system as a whole.

Yes. My experience was that they are lazy and don't care. They have no financial incentives to care, and they've sold themselves on a narrative of complacency and accepted failure. I mean, unless you can explain away the rapidly declining quality of a public education which correlates with continual raises over the same time?

At 16, I was far more capable and motivated to educate myself using the library and Internet than any teacher was. At my public school there were no teachers capable of educating me on legal issues beyond where I'd educated myself to, ditto for coding and I can't program for shit.

I won't even comment on the teachers that were fucking students and buying drugs from them, which was not super rare.

[–]Jables162 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You were a few thousand off on the median salary, it's 53k but your point still stands with that.

a married couple of teachers

Assuming teachers always marry teachers? And like what the others are saying, they don't all make 53k a year. Just because the average pay for a small business owner can be pretty high doesn't mean that they all make good money. Usually the higher numbers off set the average a lot more than the smaller numbers.

All it takes is one dude making some 90k a year to pull the average up a little. And considering the highest paid ones make close to 85k a year in the public school system, and they are from California or New York, it makes sense.

If most of those teachers in two of the most populated States are earning a lot of money, then that will offset the average pretty hard.

And it sounds like you're pulling that "Fucking students and buying drugs from them" story straight out of your ass.

And just because a teacher taught you morals (you know, not teaching you how to lie) doesn't make them a bad teacher. It means you didn't grasp the concepts and probably didn't look for help either.

It's not hard to find help to learn in public schools.

[–]ambermonkey 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

They have no financial incentives to care

Bc there is no money. That is the reason the US education system is one of the worst in the world. The amount of times that I have seen class funding cut to build a football field is astounding. And who decides that, teachers? No.

At 16, I was far more capable and motivated to educate myself using the library and Internet than any teacher was. At my public school there were no teachers capable of educating me on legal issues beyond where I'd educated myself to, ditto for coding and I can't program for shit.

A lot of people aren't as brilliant as you seem to think you are and need structure, and the schools need money to build that structure. This has become a biography on your education. I am still curious if the number you gave is a national median. And I'd be curious the salary of the lower level districts in comparison to the national average.

[+]CivilityBeDamned -6 points-5 points-4 points 11 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

I'm not going to do your research for you when you keep making completely incorrect points. You feel free to prove my cited assertions incorrect. I'm guessing you learned your logic in public schools.

You can Google and get the median salary. You can then make whatever arbitrary distinctions you like from it. You have cited nothing.

Holy hell like landscaping? Which people work far harder at, and get less than half the money for? How about fast food work? How about daycare centers? Many, many people work far harder for FAR less.

I work for myself, but I'd gladly cut my business down to stuff I could do in the off hours to get that sweet pension and benefit package.

As a teacher who has been in a situation like this, it is very easy to lock up if you don't act immediately. You never know if they (the kids) are playing their silly games or if they are serious this time. If you hesitate, it snowballs and you let more and more go by because you didn't react to the previous iteration. If you crack down at every flare up then you don't get any respect from the kids.

My girlfriend taught at a ghetto-ass beauty school, this sort of shit went on all the f'ing time. And these were grown "adults". She had no control or power to do anything when shit went down. I finally suggested she get an AirHorn & ear plugs, then blast that shit when they start acting the fool. Needless to say she was too nice to follow my advice.

The teacher is just like "Why did I have to take the job at the fucking zoo..."

[–]NotoriousBreeIG 4 points5 points6 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I laughed every time the teacher came into view, I can imagine him just sitting there with his head in his hands checking the time and asking the kids to make sure and not bleed on the carpet in a monotone voice.

I wish the youth of today could discover the disarming power of silence. If that dude had just stood up, stared her in the eyes, and remained completely silent this would have gone a completely different way.

The aggression is looking for validation, if you starve it, it recedes.

[–]super_ag 21 points22 points23 points 11 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Most of the time, the teacher will get into more trouble intervening when students are fighting than just sitting there letting it happen. If they even lay a hand on a student, it's a lawsuit that could ruin the teacher's career.

[–]Ralex- 9 points10 points11 points 11 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

What a horrible time we live in where people can sue the teacher for trying to stop a fight.

[–]Richas 10 points11 points12 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I got suspended in high school for fighting back (and winning) after a kid sucker punched me. The assistant principle said they had zero tolerance, and that if I didn't want to be suspended I should have not fought back. My dad who was obviously frustrated and on my side, asked the assist principal if he reached over the desk right now and punched him in the face, wouldn't he fight back? There was a long awkward silence before he repeated that I was still suspended. School system is full of corrupt cowards.

[–]KinkyKelly 7 points8 points9 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Your dad is awesome.

[–]nomdeanon 3 points4 points5 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Would have been more awesome if he punched the principal.

You have obviously never been in a school like this. There is no point. They will just ignore him. He can't touch them and they know it. So in their mind, why listen to him?

[–]BrownBoognish18 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

The system does not empower teachers in these situations, it punishes them for intervening.

[–]balancedhighs 7 points8 points9 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Health and safety policy most likely. If two kids wanna kick the shit out of each other that's fine, nobody can sue anybody. But if a teacher is compelled to help by her job and is injured she could bring a claim against the school for not protecting her in the workplace.

[–]Tiggymartin 6 points7 points8 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

She would get sued and placed in prison if she did a single thing to them. Welcome to the law system.

[+]Deathletter13 -6 points-5 points-4 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Wtf is the teacher doing just sitting there?

Do a year in one of these schools, come back and comment.
