You know the cultural tide is turning when you see this on HuffPo.

My thoughts exactly.

Credit to /u/irisandoleander for posting this elsewhere recently, and for making me think of it with her most recent post.

This was a surprisingly good article from HuffPo of all places about the diminished role that society has given to fathers today; fathers are not babysitters, they are parents!

I was so happy with how this post did on my facebook. Like the amount of women who were in agreement and took a moment to praise how awesome their husbands are.

We all know hufpo is crap but even a broken clock is right 2x a day 😊

He will spot a red rash behind our son’s ears and google “possibility of death with red rash behind ears” and quietly convince himself it’s a flesh eating virus.

BAHAHA that's TOTALLY the kind of stuff my husband would do for our cats.

I have to disagree with some of the points being made here actually. And maybe I'm not qualified to talk on the subject- I have no children and have been firmly childfree up until recently; my partner and I have changed our minds about starting a family in the future. So thinking about kids is new to me. But it's actually RPW and implementing those ideas in our lives and embracing rather than rejecting traditional gender roles than have opened our hearts to the idea of parenthood. I personally don't think a man should play an equal role in parenting as a mother. I think yes he should play an equally important role and putting down the importance (and competence) of a father is unkind. But I don't believe men have that same inherent nurturing and mothering instinct, so no they do not do the same things. I think modern day feminism is sort of pushing all parents to be play the same role as the nurturer which is a very new concept and imho leads to confused children with a good concept of love and attachment but no concept of strength and discipline from Dad. Just my 2 cents idk

Well, it is HuffPo, LOL!

I think one of the problems, and why fathers are mocked as being incompetent, is because the mothers sort of hog the baby, and they want the fathers to do everything like they would. The mothers don't let the fathers try things their own way; they micromanage the way the father interact with the babies, so the father doesn't have a chance to figure out the way he would do it best.

A few times of being told how to do things makes the interaction less pleasant, and makes the father less likely to be active while the mother is around to correct his parenting. I think this is a direct result of the mothering instinct, and it's not a bad thing necessarily, but I also think that it might drive a wedge between the father and child.

Tl;dr: Women will be the main nurturer, but when dad has the kid, let him do things his own way unless he asks for help. Do not try to control their interactions.

Agreed, these were my thoughts as well. The dad is a parent on his own, he's not equally (as in, interchangeably) mom, nor a lesser 'mom', it's hard to approach from mainstream media because how obsessed they are with not offending any group so the unique position of dads got downplayed to not offend single moms, but more recently I've seen them trying to compensate it by giving the dad a momlike place, which isn't quite the case either in terms of human nature. I'd be conflicted if I were a dad because it's like their place gets constantly debated and discussed in function of mothers.

This is really true, a dad gives something different to a child, like I find I can give comfort well and that's my gut instinct, but dad might try and encourage bravery as well, I sometimes hear him say "make me proud, hey?" at bedtime.

The article wasn't talking about how dads should do MORE - it's really talking about how we need to give men respect for what they DO do.

Dad's aren't babysitters, they are parents.

[–]--cunt1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Reading it again I still kind of get the vibe "Dad does what mom does" and that isn't the way I would raise my children

[–]Irisandoleander 8 points9 points10 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

There are many dads that do split the tasks with the mom. And in that case, let's respect them for that. Now, in your situation maybe he never changes a diaper, whatever. But whatever he DOES do should be respected.

Loved this article! I've taken a few baby classes recently, one of which my husband went with me to. I didn't really know what a dude could learn from a breastfeeding class, but he wanted to go. To my surprise they not only had advice for how dads can help, they actually had a handout just for them! There's really important things he can do to help facilitate breastfeeding, especially in the first few days. Like keeping family out of our hair, and making sure I eat and drink enough. Men need to feel needed, so I'm happy that he can start parenting, even in the beginning!
