I always plate the first dish since he eats more than me and I already have a good idea of the amount he’ll be happy with.

I’ll happily go make a second for him, but if he insists on getting it himself, I use it as an opportunity to see the things he picks more of or if he happens to leave anything (especially if it’s a new recipe.) It gives me a hint about the things he likes without me questioning him while he’s trying to eat - though we do often talk about his likes and dislikes too.

We eat “family style” with serving platters/bowls in the middle of the table… so everyone picks and chooses what/how much they want. We have multiple kids with different preferences/tastes, so it’s just easier for them (and my husband) to choose how much of each thing they want to try! It also saves me a couple steps in the process… I don’t have to plate up for everyone, and my serving ware is all fridge-safe, so I don’t have to repack leftovers etc. 😊

Just offer to get him seconds when you see him about to get up. He may turn you down; generally only the person eating knows how much they want and it's easy to over serve on seconds by accident. Or he may be happy by the extra service with a smile. 🤷‍♀️ it's impossible to know until you offer.

Whoever cooks offers to make a plate for the other but we usually serve ourselves and eat together with no phone or TV, maybe music.

Don’t over do it, he will think you’re just living to please him, sometimes it’s too much, just do one and that’s it.

Just my personal opinion but it would make a meaningful improvement to your relationship if you put your phone down and attempted to engage with your husband during the meal. Also more important to your relationship than wondering if you should serve his second portion or have him get it himself, I wonder if you are changing out of your PJ's to greet him at the end of the day. Not neccesarily getting all dressed up, just getting dressed and being nicely turned out. If you can do that, and have a nice conversation with him about his day during, I don't think the serving of seconds is going be an issue you need to stress over.

PS IDK, sometimes Id get up and get him more, sometimes I'd direct him to what's left and suggest he helps himself. Would generally depend on whether I'd finished eating, or was up and cleaning up anyway or how tired and sore he was that day.
