I recommend having both sweet and savoury snacks, that way people with a sweet tooth will be happy as will those without.

Some of my favourite games are Catan, Carcassonne, Boss Monster, Trivial Pursuit ... Exploding Kittens is also pretty entertaining!

Party Game: Imaginiff

Strategy Game: Diplomacy

Team Game: Pandemic or Forbidden Island

One v/and Everyone Else: Letters From Whitechapel; Mysterium (two best board games in existence, IMO)

Group Interactive Movie: Hidden Agenda (PS3) - it's basically a movie that you collectively influence by voting through an app on your phone to reach one of several endings

Nibbles: Chips and Queso

Queso Recipe: 1 brick of Velveta, 1 regular size jar of Pace thick and chunky, 1 cup of green olives, 2 cans drained Rotel tomatoes and green chilis, 1 can hormel chili (only thing that might not be gluten free, if that's an issue), red hot (to taste)

Treat it similar to a super bowl party.

Get some chips (hopefully not too messy) and put them into small tubs for easy eating.

I have a strategy game called Libertalia which is very good if people enjoy being competitive and have a good memory. Thankfully it's not one of those strategy games where people tend to get hot headed about winning because the point system is in 5 cumulative rounds, people can easily make a comeback from last place to first place with a bit of skill and a little bit of luck.

I'm thinking hummus and crackers could be a good snack addition, easy to make at home or purchase because of the array of different flavours! If you make it yourself you can flavour it as you wish (and avoid any allergies people might have).

Mix a few silly songs into the playlist and provide quality beers. And you can download cards against humanity, for free, print and cut and laminate. Not a board game, but still a fun extra.

As long as they are games he likes and food he enjoys, go for it.

Try to avoid food that is overly messy, to help keep the games clean.

Personal favorites are Boss Monster, Formula D, Seven Wonders, and Eclipse.

If your bf and his siblings are nerds, try to hunt down a copy of a game called Ubi. It is the strangest, most bizarre version of trivial pursuit ever. It’s complicated and a little difficult but also absolutely hilarious because it’s just so completely strange. My friends and I were all history majors so the questions weren’t too hard (especially when we had teams) but the game itself is just...so convoluted and ridiculous it’s basically a good time no matter what- but ONLY if they’re history buffs, geography buffs, that kind of nerd. I don’t think the game would be otherwise salvageable because if you can’t even guess at the answers it’s likely a miserable time had by all.

That being said, if history/geography is their cup of tea, it’s a low-print game that almost nobody has heard of or played before and it can be fun (once you figure out how to even play it). Might be a nice challenge!

There are a lot of great board game recommendations on this thread. One thing you might want to do is play the games with him first so 1) he understands the game and rules and 2) make sure he likes it.

Great reccomendations by everyone!

My family loves playing board games too. The only issue is regarding food, because the games take up the table etc. Snack foods as others have suggested could be good, just make sure there’s some substantial stuff there too if it’s at lunch time or dinner time. Some examples might be mini hamburgers or little hot dogs or sausage rolls.

I love Betrayal at the House on the Hill - especially at this time of year! It takes a little getting used to, but is great fun...you can also go a little themed with your party food/music/etc and be a bit spooky.

Awesome! I just hosted a board game party a few weeks ago.

I told everybody it was a BYOB thing and that I was making all the food. My guy made two dips (a buffalo jackfruit and a bean dip) and I made this DELICIOUS fall pasta salad, the best vegan cookies you'll ever eat ever, I baked a loaf of bread and had chips and veggies and what not.

Anyway, I'm sure he'll love it! Surprises are the best, right?

What kind of games do you have planned? We did Secret Hitler which is my favorite, Telestrations, Taboo and Liars Dice.
