So, I'm a big proponent of meeting early. I believe you can do it safely, and it saves time and keeps expectations in check. However, part of that safety is taking your own vehicle and meeting in public. There's a pretty small chance this guy is going to hurt you, but what you're describing, picking him up in your vehicle and having a picnic doesn't seem like excellent first meet precautions. That drive back sounds miserably awkward if it doesn't go well, too. I would suggest you wait until he can meet you somewhere. The picnic is fine, as long as it's in a really public place, not a secluded park. I tend to think women can be too cautious with online dating, but these are pretty reasonable steps to take.

The first meeting should be short and simple. You risk not only being stranded with a guy in a place you cannot leave quickly with an excuse. You must also drive him back, even if things go wrong. The scenario is asking for a disaster. There is no need to be bitchy. Suggest meeting for a coffee near where he lives.

Full text: I matched with a guy this week. We’ve texted. We’ve video chatted. He seems nice enough. He wants to go on a date this weekend, which I agreed to. There are a few things, I’m unsure about:

His car broke down yesterday. So I would have to pick him up and drive him around for our first time meeting. This isn’t something I’m used to so I’m questioning if we should postpone it until his car is fixed. (But we have a few days until then so he may fix it before then.)
He wants to have a picnic. He said he wants to do something low-cost since he’s having issues with his car. I told him that I think a picnic is a little much for our first time meeting each other. He disagreed because he sees a picnic as something he would do with his friends…

Should I just go with the flow or do I need to put my foot down (and risk looking bitchy)?

I would do the picnic but ask him to Uber. Do not pick up someone you don’t know. A picnic is chill to me - sit, talk, have some food/drink and if you’re not into it, you can leave after an hour easily.
