Older men

My SO is older and I generally have gone for older guys. I've found that they're a bit more masculine and confident. They more capable of supporting a family and in my experience more willing.

The downside is that they come with more baggage and you're lucky to find somebody worth while that doesn't have a previous wife or children.

What would you consider as “older” with respect to your dating preferences? If your username suggests that your age is currently 21-22 then what would your limit be on the age?

It’s more so about life stages. My SO is 6 years older than me but is at the same stage as me (wanting to settle down). I am a big believe in dating older men because they usually have the finances and maturity to provide for a family. Not a blanket statement, but I’ve found it to be true for me and my friends

I was never in older guys. My oldest was 6 years older and it ended soon, because we had completly different view on life (I was 18 and he 24 at the time). My ex was two years older but a big child. My husband is only a month older (we are 25) and I never felt more connected. He really grew into a man in this two years. Plus we are both youthful, strong, eager to learn, etc. But he is also the first who really wants a family with me and that's the cherry on the top. I love young daddys.

So I normally dated up by 2-3 years. The relationship before the one with my husband, there was a ten year gap. I always planned to date and marry someone older for all the obvious reasons of more maturity, more set up in their life, and so on. I've always been incredibly mature for my age, but honestly for me, that large of a gap didn't work. Granted, we also weren't compatible in other ways, so I can't totally pin it on the age gap. But, I found we had difficulty relating in some ways, because there was such a large age gap between us.

On top of the fact that I would be personally worried about fertility health with someone that much older than me. Most people aren't well aware of this, but older fatherhood comes with risks just as older motherhood does. Sperm quality degrades over time, just as egg quality. So that was a personal concern for me.

I ended up marrying a man exactly my age, who was also very mature for his age. And it's been wonderful. We are 24 and expecting our first baby! We've been able to grow up together in a lot of ways, and become more compatible over time, versus spending time working through past baggage and habits. We've been able to build our life together the way we want, versus having to negotiate with already existing lifestyles. We are young together and full of energy and excitement for life! And we are honestly extremely goofy together, and being with him has always been as easy and natural as breathing. So I think it's a highly personal question, and depends so much on the personalities involved, I don't think there's a one-size-fits-all answer.

My husband and I have a 12 year difference. I'm just about to turn 27 and he turned 39 a few weeks ago. Generally, I'd say that it's been a very positive experience. I've always been a pretty mature person and he's a really fun and very responsible guy, so it's a good match. We've both helped eachother grow as people.

One thing that I think helped, and something that others with age differences struggle with, is our power dynamic. While he is still the breadwinner by far, and was very established in his career already when we began dating 4 years ago, I was establishing myself in a fantastic career of my own and was independent. He also has a very strong (sometimes a tad too strong!) personality, but I am a pretty strong person myself, and have no problem being in his frame while not being a doormat.

It typically takes a rather long time for a man to gain the things in his life that make him appear as an obviously suitable long term partner. Confidence, money, status, willingness to provide for a family. Unless he grew up in a family that pushed him to be that way many men simply aren't going to be that way until they get older and it comes either naturually or as part of their self improvement when they figure out that being more alpha is more conducive to meeting their life goals.

Given this I have always been more attracted to older men. Their maturity. Their sense of self. That they know who they are and how to lead. My Captain is 12 years older than me. I dont think it is strange to be attracted to older men even though some are put off by it.
