My apologies if this is an issue that has been addressed to death. I did a search, but maybe my key words were the wrong ones.
My SO and I are currently working on forwarding our careers. He has a good job, with potential for promotion. He recently proposed the use of an innovative, streamlining program, which his company will now be employing at it's international branches as well as his own. I am so proud of him. I have witnessed such an increase in motivation and productivity in him since the beginning of our relationship. I can't help but hope I had a hand in it. Getting more involved in his work place, my SO is naturally busier. He also has several side projects and a freelance company of his own to keep on top of.
I am graduating with a B.A. at the end of this semester, have applied for masters programs, but am primarily working towards finding a job in my field of expertise. I have too much free time right now. With this free time I am concentrating on exercising, my hobbies, housework, and spiritual growth, much of my focus being directed toward the growth of my relationship.
Despite both myself and my SO being in this period of transition, where our hard work is of absolute necessity, we find that we are being over-indulgently leisurely. It makes me very anxious, dreading the consequences. My SO is complaining of head chatter, an inability to calm his mind.
I made activity cards with four categories: career, housework, exercise, and relaxation. These cards are meant to help us structure our schedules, insure our days are balanced, and that we accomplish necessary activities. We are in the early stages of this program; the first week, actually. A problem has already reared it's head.
When I see that my SO is not sticking to his scheduled activity, instead he's browsing reddit or chatting online, I will remind him of the duty he has assigned himself for that time. He does not like this and has asked me to stop. I must be nagging him.
My SO reacts adversely to guilt. His major complaint about his mother is that she guilt trips him. I, on the other hand, feed off guilt and shame. My major complaint about my father is that I never felt as if he was proud of my accomplishment. The lack of validation drove me to try harder. I realize the tactics that work for me do not work for him. Sometimes I find the right way to handle it, but most of the time I am missing the mark. Maybe I am always on his case because I don't feel like I'm being productive enough. Maybe my guilt is spilling over to him.
Should I back the fuck off and trust him to handle this himself? Or, is there another, less annoying way I can help keep him on task? Am I wrong for even bringing this up here?
