I have a physician in my family, so I understand where she's coming from. My sister got married while in med school, so it wasnt an issue, but I can see how it could hurt her practice if she changed the name on it. Patient word of mouth and reviews are what attracts business and new patients might not be able to find her because now she's Dr. X instead of Dr. Y. However, I'm unsure why she wouldn't want to at least go by his name socially, but I'm firmly on the side of "families should have the same name" so I don't get her views on that point.

Personally, if I was getting married and the man insisted I keep my own name (cuz he's so "progressive"), I'd be very insulted. Perhaps slightly heartbroken.

Our society is built on a patrilineal naming system, and for good reason. Before a woman is wed, historically, she is under the protection and care of her father. Once she is wed those responsibilities pass to her husband, so her last name changes to reflect the new guard. The fact that on a woman's wedding day she is walked down the aisle by her father towards her husband is evidence of this. Any woman who says she does not want to be under the protection and care of a man needs only look to the cat obsessed professional victims, a.k.a. feminists, to see how happy that decision is going to make her.

I could possibly see a case for a woman keeping her name if changing it would have a negative financial impact because of her career, but then again most RP men would not marry a career obsessed woman who would not change her last name, so perhaps that is a moot point.

I vetoed her idea of hyphenation of her last name right out of the gate. If she doesn't want my name she won't get me. Done.

When you are married under the old religions. You belong to the man. And you move into his house. Therefore you take his name. Unfortunately the law of the land dictates otherwise.
