This is bullshit. My friend went to Western Illinois University amd his fraternity allowed him to network in a way that he's already making $50,000/year just two years out of school. They are incredible networks for success and should not ne dissolved.

College has become a joke.

They don't teach real logic anymore... it's all emotional mind control.

Math, Physics, Computer Science are all good, but there's really no reason you couldn't learn that from an online course.

I have two B.S. degrees and I remember what a waste the lectures were and towards the end I simply got the assignments and skipped the lectures whenever possible.

The whole college experience is sold as a kind of party time, but in the real world outside college there are plenty of places to party.

Also, 25 years ago (when I went) it was cheap... no debts.

These days college will ruin your future by adding huge debts to your life.

I've talked with guys who are $100k or more in debt with no job... their lives are fucked.

The fraternity is a carry over when men went to college to learn things like the Trivium (grammer, logic, rhetoric) and were preparing to be the elite members of society. These days the college system teaches you the Blue Pill mythology and seeks to make you into beta males.

Why pay money and get in debt just to be a Blue Pill beta male?

If they call for closing all fraternities then all sororities should close too. But nobody would ever pursue that double standard.

We don't have frats at my university (Canada, banned b/c of "discrimination"), but we do have interuniversity frats.

Going into senior year tho, didn't find out about this until junior year... guess I missed the boat. Oh well, it is what it is.

Hope the courts have the balls to NOT ban frats... it's the last vestige of masculinity left in education (save for all-boys schools).

It's amazing how different each chapter is in terms of culture, hazing, and overall expectations. I'm a beta that came from a chapter that had probably hazed just the right amount. But we had fun, threw parties, still got good grades, had a healthy rivalry for best on campus etc etc and only got in trouble a handful of times for little bs reasons. Sad to see this happen.

To the OP - if you know fraternity life, especially at a school like Penn then you'd know this kid likely didn't have a choice in how much he was drinking. While that can be an issue the real problem is that his pledge brothers and the brothers were too afraid to help him out in fear of the repercussions. Send a brother to the hospital and it's not a big deal. Send a pledge and you're done.

What I'd hate to see is if beta went the way of SAE and SigEp and cut pledging entirely. It's basically just a drinking club at that point.

Stupid boy got insanely drunk. Others mistook him for just passed out. Shit hit the fan, he died. Now they want to close frats because what? I've seen sororities with more irresponsible persons being members. They should start a frat religion and drinking is a liturgical act. They don't want to offend a religion, this would be frat-phobic.

Edit: this is gonna get ugly fellas the libs and feminists are also closing the sororities. When they eat their own then the fun begins.

that to the side, I had seen this on tv and read a few articles. NO ONE says they made him drink this gauntlet. EVERYONE says he fell.

I have too much of a hard time believing this ... in Boston. Where if the brothers thought there was a real threat .... and let's assume that everyone at the party was drunk as hell and could not drive (which by the way is not how that works. no matter what the event, every frat I know - well knew - we're talking about a decent amount of time .... has a group of people who operate the party and can not drink that night).

but if NO ONE COULD TAKE HIM ... taxies ... uber .... there were a million ways to get him out of there if they thought he was in danger or required medical attention.

and this story with the brother shoving people into the walls and threatening them rings of post event lying to cover their own hindsight 20/20 guilt.

but should fraternities be banned? I guess. it won't matter. I do think that if they are that there is no place for any type of social club or organization on campuses regardless of purpose.

It's only a matter of time before they come for the fraternities full on. I'm just hoping that the organizations involved in Greek life have enough of a backbone to not back down when that happens.

Also, keep in mind, when social college fraternities first started they were usually operating outside the auspices of the universities, and in some cases students could be expelled for being involved in them. If schools ban fraternities outright (disassociate themselves formally with Greek life), there isn't much to stop men from creating unofficial (read: not formally affiliated with the school) fraternities outside the official capacity of the school's control.

At this point probably the two reasons some universities haven't banned Greek life is 1.) Fraternities and Sororities typically donate money to their host schools, and 2.) The schools fear losing patronage from alumni who were involved in Greek life.

frats probably wont go anywhere anytime soon. right now schools have kinda iffy policies that they can barely enforce. but if they push too hard frats go underground, schools lose TONS of donations, and hazing and drinking would be out of control. the system found a balance right now and while this is tragic (and beta at psu deserves to lose their charter) i wouldnt worry too much. ofc sjw's gonna sjw and for some reason they latched onto this so they will try to ruin other people's fun when it doesn't affect them at all

Frats and sororities should both be banned. It is a ridiculous notion for an institution of higher learning. We send our youths to college for what? Damn sure not to drink and fuck everyone they can. That is all frats are for is fraternization. College is to benefit your future. Not ruin it by throwing away such formative years on the poison of alcohol and its subsequent, deviant culture.
