For background, everyone in this story is around 21-22 years old. I used to see this girl, we'll call her M. I stopped seeing her about a month ago because a guy, we'll call him J, decided he wanted to lock down the poon for himself, and they started dating exclusively. I was not acquainted with this guy but I knew of him because we went to high school together in a small town. He is your typical nice guy - always kissing his girlfriend's ass while being needy and controlling.

This all started Wednesday. I am doing a research project for my school, so I sent her the related survey and asked if she would take it. She agreed, and then she invited me to her Halloween party this Sunday. Now, I know that her boyfriend hates me, because he knows that I was screwing around with his girl just a few days before he started dating her. She said not to worry about him; if he has a problem with me being there, she'll tell him to leave.

At this point, I knew that meant she wanted the D. So last night I called her and told her to give me a tour of her new place. She agreed, and I headed over. Shortly after I arrived, we were in the bedroom. We had not gotten to the fun part yet, but we were well on our way, when we heard the door close. I thought it was the dog just making noise, so I didn't pay it much mind until this guy pokes his head through the bedroom door.

He came into the room and just stared at us for a second, analyzing the scene before him. The first thing this girl says is "well, you're off work early." He stormed out into the living room, and she followed. I sat in the bed for a few more seconds pondering the situation I had put myself in. I could hear them arguing; him asking how she could do this to him after all he had done for her, how she thinks that makes him feel, etc. (remember, they had only been dating for a month). She was apologetic, but remorseless.

I was getting my shit together to leave when I hear "Hey!" and he comes back into the room. As I said, I know of this guy but had never really interacted with him. He seemed soft, but I was well aware that I really didn't know what this guy was capable of.

He says "What kind of asshole does this to a guy's girlfriend?"

I said "Listen, I am just going to get my shit and leave before this goes any further."

He says "No, I want you to answer my question." I think he could tell that I was ready to throw down if it came to it, because his body language was much less aggressive than at first.

I really had never had a problem with the guy (and I felt bad for him), and I didn't want it to come to blows, so I did my best to de-escalate the situation. I said "I'm that kind of asshole. Man, I know how you feel, and it ain't fun, but you are gonna have to work that out with her. I'm leaving now."

I had to walk literally within dick-distance to get past him and out the door. I was waiting for him to swing as I inched by, but he let me walk right out. A little while after I left, she called me.

I could tell she was relieved that it was over and nothing had gotten too out of control. To add insult to injury, she even said "I'm kinda disappointed I didn't get to yell at him and kick him out at my Halloween party."

Moral of the story: Don't be that guy, and don't be me; unless you're prepared to face a livid boyfriend. I took a calculated risk because I had pegged the guy as a push-over, and I wasn't concerned about him being aggressive with me. I was lucky that my assumption was correct, but he could have easily walked in the room with a baseball bat and fucked me up. And I wouldn't blame him! Don't get caught with your pants down.
