Look into Iceland. I remember reading 10 or so years ago that people would couple up, have kids, break up, but stay friends and share raising the kids, like its no big deal the parents each have new lovers now. It seemed so bizarre to me at the time, but now that seems a much more reasonable way to do it. The article claimed this was because Christianity never had a big presence there.

I'm in the same boat. I'd prefer a ceremonial marriage, just without the legally binding certificate. I'd like to give my woman the title of 'Wife,' just without the bullshit governmental involvement. And I do want children one day, having a genetic legacy is important to me. In my American state, there is no recognized 'common law' marriage, but the type of arrangement I'm interested in leaves a lot of questions. Your post has inspired me to do some research, if I find anything useful, I'll post it here.

Are you kidding? Having kids out of wedlock is common these days. I did it. Of course, she wants marriage but that's in my court.

As you know well, the family court system is extremely biased in favor of women. The woman will almost certainly get custody of the kids. That means you have to pay her child support. In New York, it's 17% of your gross (not after tax) income until the kid is 21. You pay more for more kids. Also, your obligations may extend further if the "kid" goes to college. There's zero way of enforcing whether or not the money you pay in fact goes to the kids or towards handbags, shoes, nights out etc.

But hey, maybe you'll get custody during the weekends. So you can babysit the kids while she sl00ts it up at the bars with your money.

At least in the united states I don't think that having kids is any easier outside of marriage. Why would it be? Child support and custody have nothing to do with marriage.
