Background: in a six month relationship, living in a major city, I'm currently out of town.
Go to bed at 11AM. Phone rings at 2AM. Girlfriend is drunk in a cab having just left a party. I'm totally out of it, she's blabbering on at 20 words a second and I'm silent. Finally:
- Her: "oh, did I wake you?"
- Me: "yup"
- Her: "you want me to let you go?"
- Her: "yup"
- Her: sighing deeply "That's not what I wanted to hear."
Now I do understand she's scared at night when she's drunk and alone, which makes me realize that she just wants me to stay on the phone with her until she's home, which is reasonable. I do care about her.
- Me: "Okay I'll stay on the phone"
- Her: something something something
- Me: (silence as i'm having trouble thinking of anything because I was just pulled out of REM sleep)
- Her: (disgusted) "okay, i can let you go"
- Me: "Okay" (she's 5 mins from home (in a good neighborhood) at this point. she's safe in my mind)
Text conversation 5 mins later:
- Her: "Home. Sad u didn't want to talk"
- Me: "I went to sleep 3 hours ago and u woke me up. You can't expect more. Glad you're home safe"
- Her: "Ok", "Sorry for waking you"
- Me: "Good night"
- Her: "I don't get you."
- Me: "Seriously you're drunk and being a brat. Go to bed we'll talk when you're sober."
- Her: "I know I'm a brat." (Followed by several more random topic messages that I didn't respond to)
She's apologetic at first the next morning, but then attempted to guilt trip me over not staying on the phone with her. I reiterated that her expectations were out of line all things considered.
I'm not even sure I'm framing this right. I care about her a lot, but there are limits to what are reasonable expectations of support. How do you discern between shit tests and actual support of your partner's needs?
td;dr: Girlfriend calls me drunk in the middle of the night, scared alone in a cab. She gets upset that I'm (sleepily) out of it, despite trying to be supportive. I call her on her shit and tell her to go to bed. She then tries to guilt trip me for not being supportive. How do you discern between shit tests and actual support of your partner's needs?
