I remember reading once - who wrote it and where, I don't remember - about this. Nobody will ever earn favor with this. Ever. The analogy was made: don't do altruistic things for hope of earning favor. It's okay to go to a soup kitchen and spend your time feeding homeless people for no other reason than to do something good; but to do favors to people without any concern in reciprocation will not get you anything. Nobody else can tell the difference between doing favors to earn favor and doing favors just to do them except you.
