Bunch of haters ITT. Mike Rowe's work ethic and mindset can be applied to any pursuit in life, not just some blue-collar job. If your "job" is to start your own business, you can still show up early and leave late etc.

Mike Rowe is correct. There is rarely such thing as a bad job. You want to bitch about someone paying you a salary? Fucking leave. Or take what you've learned and start your own business.

Honestly this type of "be happy in a bad job, step up and be a task-bitch and hope it gets you promoted, don't follow your dreams, just find glory in whatever menial shit you do" mentality is great advice to be a good beta workerbee.

There is nothing RP about this shit - and thank god we live in a world where enough people don't think like this. This advice will help an unsuccessful beta become a slightly more successful beta who can trick himself into feeling dignity in the shit of his 9 to 5.

Fuck it. Take risks, take out a loan to go get your masters. I fucked up and got a useless ass bachelors and had no money out of college, and I got a decent job in sales, but it was a "bad job" in that I hated it and was bored. Instead of ponying up and deciding to force my mind to feel passionate about it, I did the absolute minimum (and somehow this got me promoted) whilst taking online classes to get into a a masters I cared about.

Happiness is an important indicator of whether you are en route to success or not. I was happy as shit going back to grad school at 26/27, happy as shit in the new job I got after - and it was all because I wasn't about to HAMSTER a shitty job into a good job or buy into this "don't follow your passion, just be miserable for a wage" mentality.

How similar does that sound to dating advice for betas? Just be happy what you get, she may not be what you wanted, yeah she is only with you because of what you provide, but sack up and provide for her like it's the greatest thing in the world, bring that passion to her, and she will be... decent to you.

There is a such thing as a bad job and it's called 95% of jobs. When you accept your bad job as an inevitability and funnel your full passion into it, what happens? You eventually become not happy, but content in that mediocrity. Funnelling your love, your masculine desire to get out there and create something great, into a shitty 9-5 will ROB you of your ability to Hannibal yourself into a better situation. How can you have the "I'm going to find a way to fuck my way into a better job that I like or make one" mentality if you are content being paid some trash salary to do trash work?

That is the red pill. 95% of people receive trash compensation today (aka not enough to buy you security, a home, provide for a family, protect you for a year if you get injured and can't work, etc) for trash work that they hate, but hamster into finding "decent enough". It is a parallel to the fact that there are simply 10x as many betas out there as their are alphas.

If you want to break the cycle, you must USE THE NEGATIVITY inherent to your situation rather than "manning up and bearing it on your shoulders". I'm not saying you have to do what I did, which was quit abruptly, eat at a college cafeteria with a friend's ID, take out loans, and get further education. There are infinite paths to breaking the cycle of being a beta employee. But forcing yourself to be happy and positive about your shitty situation - aka escapism - is not one of them. Generally you need BOTH positive and negative motivation on your side, as well as a willingness to take risks.

The rest of the article is just irrelevant feel good shit. Do you have any idea how many successful people throughout history have appropriated credit for other people's work? Nearly every one - Edison, Shakespeare, Jobs, Dr. Dre, everyone high value "alpha" in the business world has perfected the art of having successes pinned on them and failures pinned on others, regardless of who did what.

Winners win at all costs. Losers either don't try to use the full range of tools at their disposal (both good guy and sociopath tactics) or they get caught doing so. Work ethic is important, yes, but it must be applied in a far, far more intelligent / crafty manner than "show up and be everyone's bitch, do all the tasks no one wants to do, and hope someone notices and promotes you thanks to you being Good Guy Greg around the office. Many analyses, such as Venkatesh Rao's powertalk on the sidebar, have explained how that is actually a great way to plateau at middling careers where you are undercompensated for what you provide (if you are willing to give 100% on a 50k per year salary, why should I pay you more?) Work ethic must be applied intelligently, not boneheadedly in this beta way of "hurr durr, I sacrifice far more of my life to this job, so I should be promoted first!"

I see how this could have appeared RP to you and others, but in reality, it's just a guide to being like every other beta. Don't mindfuck yourself into being happy in a shit job, that's the best way to make sure you never try to step it the fuck up and do something that will one day lead you to having a great job that you like.

About the age of 35 I resolved to become debt free. I began making payments to myself rather than creditors which I invested & cotinually received interest instead of continually paying it.

I was able to retire at 48 & am still debt free. I love it!

Oh god, not more of this bullshit. This guy went into the arts an theatre. He's an actor. He's playing a role. He shoots a couple of hours a week of him doing some tough jobs, for part of a year. He has a cushy life, makes a ton of money, purely by selling his image.

This guy is a tool and should not be who you respect. Respect the people he narrates about. He was a nobody before Dirty Jobs and he only supports blue collar people because it makes him money. THIS GUY LIVES IN SAN FRANCISCO! That's the opposite of blue collar. (Insert Suede collar joke.)

There's better actors and opera singers out there to admire. Everyone has an angle. Don't be a yuppie.

I would agree. We as a society put far too much on debt.

Debt should only be taken on if it's going to be a net positive in the end.

Student Loans: Good if you pick a field which is employable!
House/Mortgage: Good because land always appreciates in value and is typically inflation proof. Meaning getting a house now means it'll be worth more in the future.

Bad Debt: Buying a new car (as soon as you drive it off the lot it loses 50% of it's value), Consumer Debt, Payday Loans, etc...

3 is bullshit. Some jobs are dead ends, and a lot of jobs suck. Jobs that you won't list on a resume are not opportunities.

4 is an odd statement from someone who had a passion for drama and the arts. If you do end up in a career you enjoy, you will naturally be more successful.

5 Debt is sometimes necessary, and establishing good credit is crucial in this day and age. Its unavoidable, its useful, and sometimes its even profitable when you leverage it properly.

8 The squeaky wheel gets the oil. A lot of times you can make your current situation better by stating your grievances to the right people.

10 You are the product of both. ALWAYS SELL YOURSELF.

11 If things aren't fair, you try to change that...
