That reminds me of this house party I went to, this 8/10 was singing Miley Cyrus, and she sucked, to put it lightly. When she finished I told her I could hook her up with a good music teacher.

"So you're telling me I can't sing?"

"Yeah."

Couldn't get her off my back after that.

[–]lesbianDREAMS 24 points25 points26 points 12 years ago (11 children) | Copy Link

Forgive me if I'm wrong but is this called "negging"?

[–]carrotplanter 20 points21 points22 points 12 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

Pretty much. Unfortunately negging has a negative connotation around these parts, mostly because there is a vocal minority of people who can't imagine living in a world where negging works even though it obviously does or else it wouldn't hold up as a meme in the PUA community. I would call it banter or simply flirting (teasing) in the context that two people are involved in it and it helps build sexual tension, if not attraction somehow.

[–]lesbianDREAMS 10 points11 points12 points 12 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

A lot of people think of it as manipulative. But I also think these are the same guys who would buy a girl lots of drinks to try and get with her.

[–]Sturmgeist781 9 points10 points11 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Therein lies the problem.

"Maybe if I buy her drinks she'll like me and sleep with me. You insult her to catch her attention and have her want you? HORRIBLE!"

[–]jelloba 8 points9 points10 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

When it comes to male-female relationships, very few interactions don't involve manipulation in some way. Everything is dressed up as "flirting" or "teasing" to make people feel okay, but there is always a struggle beneath the surface. This idea doesn't appeal to women (and a lot of men) because it implies that people aren't really honest with each other, that what seems "natural" may just be some PUA techniques picked up from seddit.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

A lot of people think of it as manipulative.

I don't understand why people think this is a bad thing. Relationships between the sexes are based almost entirely on manipulation. Hell, women manipulate men like there's no tomorrow - suddenly when a man does it, it's wrong?

[–]1PaulRivers10 2 points3 points4 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The ultimate goal that makes things easier for manipulators is to convince their target that they're not being manipulated. It's a lot more work to manipulate someone who's on guard, than it is to manipulate someone who believes you're their friend, looking out for them, and have their best interests in mind.

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points9 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Negging only has a bad connotation because most people confuse "lightly cruel and sarcastic banter" with "being a fucking cunt".

[–]lordofthejelly 2 points3 points4 points 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

there is a vocal minority of people who can't imagine living in a world where negging works even though it obviously does

That's only part of it.

Keep in mind, there are a lot of guys continually looking for that next magic bean when it comes to women...that one secret, that one line, which having them bedding 10s for the rest of their life.

These are guys who seize on the concept of negging, and when it coming from them it becomes absolutely cringe-inducing.

That's the other reason negging has a negative connotation...it's something newbies seize upon as the next magic bean, and proceed to butcher it and give the rest of us a bad rap as a result.

[–]dvrzero 2 points3 points4 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Ah fuck I wingmanned for a guy that had just read mystery or something and I couldn't stop wincing. Luckily the girl didn't notice my face.

[–]einexile 21 points22 points23 points 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

It's called negging when you plan it out; otherwise it's called being honest and unafraid.

Really negging was a PUA repackaging of what occurs naturally between two witty people. Telling a bunch of humorless men to fake it was never going to turn out well.

This, a thousand time this...

[–]Manuel_S 9 points10 points11 points 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

This shit works. A long while back, on a group trip, this chick who had singing lessons was constantly yodeling, particularly on the bath. Opera stuff.

I asked her "Do you like singing?" and she went "of course". Then I of course said "Then you should learn." Deadpan.

Also put her in her place, scandalized her some - by the end of the trip she was eating off my hand.

[–]sunsky999 13 points14 points15 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Delivery as always is everything. Your manner, body language, tone of voice, determines whether people will perceive it as playful teasing or as you being a little bitch. What you look like also matters, but you can get around that, depending.

I'm not very nice to people and constantly tease because it's boring otherwise but I can get away with so meh. I've seen others try it, it doesn't work so well with them.

[–]Ironhigh 11 points12 points13 points 12 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

This isn't exclusive to women. You'll get much stronger friendships with men that you casually insult and get insulted, nobody likes overly nice people.

The only people that are liked for being overly nice in our society are the elderly, everyone else is seen as a submissive little bitch when being overly nice.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

All my friends that try to insult me are betas trying to prove themselves or put themselves on a pedestal. They end up getting cut asap.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Uh, I disagree. I like nice people.

If a friend of mine insulted me I'd be fucking enraged and want to smash them.

Unless you mean joking/teasing. That's fine. Insulting means something different to me though.

[–]bitchdantkillmyvibe 5 points6 points7 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

He definitely means joking/teasing. More so giving shit than anything. It creates a sense of comraderie among men if you're all big enough to give it, and take it. Genuine insults to someone's character should definitely not be tolerated.

[–]dvrzero0 points 12 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

In rhetoric, this is called a framing error.

Apropos, right?

As I say; all the time: words have fucking meanings!

Would you also think it's ok for a white dude to say some stereotypical bullshit to a black girl?

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

As a black guy, I think you'd be walking on thin ice. I don't say racist things to my white friends, and when they try to do it toward me, I get unhappy. I don't chimp out, I just let them know in a serious tone that I am not okay with it.

Anyways, I think it would depend on hlw ghetto the black girl is.

[–]thatfatpolishdude 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I meant that OP probably should refrain from saying stereotypical racist shit to girls in an attempt to make himself look red pill.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Oh okay. Yeah, I see a lot of people trying too hard to prove themselves.

[–]TRP VanguardCyralea 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Depends on the nature of the relationship. I give my chinese friends shit about their culture all the time, but that's because we're incredibly tight.

Opening up with racist comments with strangers is a dangerous game. You can pull it off sometimes if it's very mild racism, or if you target a majority. Racism against white men is hardly frowned upon. Sucks, but it's true.

[–]TRP Vanguard: "Dark Triad Expert"IllimitableMan 2 points3 points4 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Haha, this explains my go-to setting when dealing with people I don't know in an informal setting. Cocky and detached.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 12 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

As a native of Tennessee, this insults me...but I find myself liking you more...

Dammit.

Something I've had huge success with is brutal honesty. Say whatever is on your mind. It doesn't matter how fucking outrageous or hurtful it may seem, or how much you think it'll burn you. It will be succesful the majority of the time, because being honest sends the following statements:

  1. I'm not here to impress you, so I don't care if I scare you off.
  2. I'm comfortable being myself, and if you can't take that then you can fuck off too.

Really. Honesty works wonders, but you will often need massive testicles to pull it off without compromise.

[–]Fundumpsters 9 points10 points11 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Disagreeing with a woman's opinion lets them know you have other women to disagree with.

[–][deleted] 28 points29 points30 points 12 years ago* (7 children) | Copy Link

good luck with that moronic strategy if you ever want to get anywhere in your career/business.

actual successful people don't take shit from uppity little cunts who think they are hot shit. they'll just ignore you, and possibly shit can your smart talking ass.

to use a basketball analogy, it'd be like jordan farmar talking trash to chris paul.

honesty is a weapon, for sure. but its not something you use 100% of the time....that will get you killed.

[–]W-Z-R 20 points21 points22 points 12 years ago* (2 children) | Copy Link

This.

If you act like a jerk all the time, people with self-respect as in those who are actually worth spending time with, will drop your ass so quickly

[–]rife_omeqa 6 points7 points8 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

There is difference between being honest and being an "uppity little cunt who thinks they're hot shit".

If there is no difference for you then yea, being honest isn't going to help at all.

That being said; most people I deal with on a professional level don't give a shit about honesty. They like being told what they want to hear. Sometimes lying your ass off is the best option because the person you're lying to is seeking those lies. Business/career relations is also mostly about confidence.

Most people you deal with in your career or on a business level are average. Average interests, opinions, views, dramas, like and dislikes, IQ, disciple etc. And average people relate best with and work best with other average people.

Fools rush in where Angels dare to tread. Bertrand Russel said it well with "fools are cocksure and the intelligent are full of doubt". When you understand that most of the time you deal with fools or at least average people, you'll be fine. Fake it til you make it.

[–]blazingcopper 2 points3 points4 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The trick is to get what you need by (not exactly manipulating them) being fluid in your interaction and attitude when talking to people. It's how you say it and do it. Ala "how to win friends and influence people"

[–]IamIncogneato 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Farmar has got more rings than Chris Paul though!

[–]Ichbinzwei 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

True, so wouldn't you agree that there should be a boundary between personal and professional?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I think it has more to do with people being aware of their problems and at ease if you just mildly burned them, rather than being nice and laughing behind their back.

[–]Lord_Vale 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Goes back to one of Greene's laws of power: it's better to be audacious.

[–]pushajudas 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This reminds me of a chick my friend was dating a while back. Everyone in my social group hated this girl and voiced their dislike of her to my friend, but I was the only one who would make fun of her to her face. Not just mean/sarcastic, but legitimately insulting her. I distinctly remember asking her if she gained some weight at one point.

After the two broke up, I got a few texts from this girl asking if I wanted to hang out (which I turned down cause this broad was irritating as fuck). It turns out she really enjoyed my company and considered me a friend. Being mean to a girl made it seem like we were more familiar with each other than was true. Unfortunate for me in that instance, since I really wanted her to just piss off.

[–]lawonga 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Its pretty odd that it works, but it works. Still odd.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

How was the sex?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You are discovering what PUAs popularized at around 2002-2004. AKA, negging. Being a dick immediately sets you apart from every other guy she has talked to that night - it is really the "setting you apart" that creates the attraction, because you are an actual entity whereas all the other guys are non-entities / carbon copies of each other. Nice guys all sound exactly the same.

It's this differentiation that causes the attraction - it is not necessarily the being a dick part. Which is why betas will try this shit and fail miserably, because they have no calibration, they do not understand the goal in mind is to set yourself apart, not actually to make her feel completely low status.

Hank Moody from Californication is perfect at this level of calibration - enough to make the girl possibly upset / angry, but never enough to be crushing / crippling / attract a army of white knights to help out. If your dickish manner pisses off 9/10 girls, but your dickish manner is responsible for you being able to just pound out 10 confident approaches with a general sense of indifference, then it doesn't even matter that you offended the 9. Most naturals with no concept of game are like this - they have the attitude that the girl will either hate them or love them, but regardless of what happens, the girl will have a strong reaction to them.
