Canada isn't the issue. Free trade only works between nations of similar incomes and regulatory regime's. Mexico is the problem. Multinationals only pay a fraction of what they have to in the US or Canada to employ people.

To be fair, nafta was signed in a different time and could catch up to modern times. That being said, Mexico is probably overly benefiting from it. Seems like trump isn't focused much on the Canadian side of it, although it could probably use tweaks on both sides of the equation for US Canada

I'm curious about why Mexico need a free trade agreement more than USA. Usually that works better for the country with more industry: it sells manufactured goods while the poorer country sells primary stuff with no added value.

If the USA says it's getting renegotiated, then that's what's happening.

Mexico and Canada are just adjusting to the new norm, they are being intelligent and reacting to what is happening, not what they wish was happening.

Nothing is going to happen to NAFTA. It's beneficial to the U.S. It sucks for those workers who lost jobs, but if you repealed NAFTA it would fuck all the businesses that sell shit to Mexico. Canada is just saying this to play nice, as if you were patting a little kid on the head. Those jobs aren't coming back folks.

Mexico and Canada have little leverage against the USA. They'd risk losing a half a trillion dollars in annual exports if they piss us off, so of course they are playing along.

NAFTA was always about corporate profits. U.S. manufacturers make out like bandits by moving production to Mexico and selling goods back to U.S. consumers.

Can't celebrate until Trump gets big corporations to bend to his will.
