honor - don't fuck people over. Give respect to those who earn it/treat you with respect.

I am very loyal to the few people in my life who have earned my loyalty other then that I am all about number one. I am willing to help others (both men and women) who are unable to help themselves and do a fair amount charitable work.

Keep the values that you believe in but recognize that they leave you vulnerable. From there, just monitor things and basically cover your ass. Nice guys don't get stuck holding the bag because they are nice, they get stuck because they assume everyone ELSE is nice too.

Honor is a social virtue. When we use it today we usually mean something like "personal integrity," but it used to mean something closer to "reputation." Reputation for what? For worthiness to be a member of the hypothetical tribe of badass men.

Check out Bret McKay's series on honor over at Art of Manliness, as well as Jef Costello's review of Jack Donovan's The Way of Men.

Also note that in past ages, a woman's "honor" was not her reputation for badassness, but her reputation for chastity. Why? Because the "hypothetical tribe of badass men" didn't expect a woman to be strong, courageous, etc. What they cared about was sexual fidelity. Hence the difference.

The concept of honor was a big part of how past RP-aware societies kept things running despite womens' hypergamy and mens' inclination to polygamy.

You've got an ideal of the way the world should work. Now it's come face to face with the complexities of reality and of course it doesn't hold up like it "ought to" in your mind. Be very careful about trying to make the world fit a series of rules and black and white categories. That's ends up being the realm of extremists and fundamentalists and it's a path towards anger and unhappiness. You'll never convince the world to behave like you think it should.

It's far better to take your values and treat them more like a rule of thumb. Sometimes they aren't going to hold true, and maybe you can ditch one if it proves useless, but it's not something that defines you. You can speak the truth, treat people as you wish to be treated and go through your own life following your desires instead of running from your fears without needing anyone else to do the same.
