You're betting 50% minimum of your assets with a less than 50% of success.

On top of those odds, if you "win" the bet your prize is an old, out of shape, nagging, low libido housewife who spends your money.

but as long as she signs a prenuptial agreement... what's the problem?

Google "pre-nup thrown out" and you'll have many, many answers to your question.

Even if it holds up it only protects assets made before, but not during the marriage.. Yet her credit card debt is now half yours

[–]BrunoOh3 points4 points5 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Prenuptial agreements mean almost nothing.

I like the idea of marriage obviously but out of unbiased fairness:

The legal environment is changing, it leans too much towards the female in case of a divorce to the point where prenuptial agreements are not as rock solid anymore in allowing you to protect what you worked for through the years.

Did you even look for the answer before asking this question?

A prenupt usually only protects assets you already own. She'll still get half of everything you make during the marriage.

A prenupt can be ignored or thrown out. Common reasons:

  1. She did not consult an attorney before signing.
  2. The same lawyer represented both bride and groom.
  3. She signed under duress -- a wedding date was already set, plans announced to family, etc.

A prenupt can not specify child support or custody. The main reason most guys want to marry is to have a family. A prenupt won't stop her stealing your kids. That is a far bigger fear than any money worry.

Laws vary state to state. Do not expect common sense from the law. Most attorneys offer a free consult before you hire them.

Do I wear a seatbelt? Every single time I have ever been in a car.

Do I still fear car accidents? Absolutely.

Does this mean I never drive? No.

Would I still drive if the government mandated that all seatbelts had to break in 50% of accidents, and that 50% of the road surface must be covered in oil at all times? Would you be dumb enough to?

One thing that I don't understand is MLMIKE39's fear (yes I said fear) of jumping off the Golden Gate bridge.

I clearly understand hitting the water at terminal velocity... but as long as you try to go in feet first... what's the problem?

Maybe I'm missing something, but this had been on my mind recently and I'd like to understand what fear remains if being a professional bridge jumper is in place.

Unfortunately they thought of that already, so "common law" marriages are a thing. Depending where you are, living with a woman for an extended period of time equals marriage. So just live alone and have them visit. Be sure that she takes her clothes, her tampons and her toothbrush with her when she leaves.

Pre-nups can be overrun in courts. In a lot of cases they have been torn up and do not guarantee protection. During a divorce, women are known to play dirty. They will play victim of emotional abuse/dv or worse case scenario even rape and sexual assault. Your word won't count and you will be taken to the cleaners. Outside of marriage, false rape cases are anything between 40-70% depending on the country. When there is money to be made, many women will at least think about it, even if they don't apply it.

Fear is a strong word. I wouldn't say that TRP fears marriage, it just realizes that ninety-nine percent of women out there are not worth the legal and emotional risks involved.

Some women use marriage as a financial strategy. I can't tell you how many women business owners I've talked to where the conversation started with "After the divorce, I used the money I got to start my business."

There is also the "Big Day" aspect. I've talked to and read about many younger women that got married just to have the wedding. One even had the woman stating that "Everything was perfect, except the groom."

Also, a pre-nup is almost worthless: http://abcnews.go.com/Business/story?id=5333445

All valid considerations listed above.

... but let's not kid ourselves, it is fear... of having your life fucked up should things not work out.

[–]Piroko 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

why does rp fear marriage?

it is fear of having your life fucked up ahould things not work out

So why did you ask your original question?

[–]Pornography_saves_li4 points5 points6 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

To show how 'alpha' he is by disdaining our 'fear' - that he does not share. Its a backhanded 'true alphas procreate' attack.

[–]Piroko -1 points0 points1 point 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

-_-

Thank you for clearly stating what was fucking obvious.

[–]Pornography_saves_li0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Maybe to you and I. My guess, even the poster himself didn't know that.

[–]RP_Since_Birth0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Prenups are rarely enforceable in the slightest and never ever enforceable in full or in practicality. Also, you need to read the sidebar as is required before posting in this sub. This generic question is more than answered in the sidebar material

Why do you "fear" being not-married?

What does marriage actually provide beyond an otherwise committed LTR?

A marriage is, above all else, a financial contract. Does a business man feel 'fear' when a prospective business partner offers him an unreasonably risky (for his business) contract? Or does he recognize a bad agreement and refuse to sign?

[–]WeCantHaveFun-1 points0 points1 point 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Get married and find out.

It's not fear, it's calculated rejection.

[–]MLMIKE39[S] 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link

You assumethat i'm not married. I've been married for close to 13 years.

[–]WeCantHaveFun-2 points-1 points0 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You didn't say you weren't.

Enjoy the trainwreck.
